Classic map touchup, take three! Live map updated!

**Update at bottom of post**

Reading all the feedback from the Tuesday's changes to the Classic, it's pretty clear that we screwed up. I expected the change would have been well received after the touchup spent over 2 months in the Map Foundry - but the Classic is so important that we should have publicized this beforehand on a much larger scale. Rest assured that we are listeningcarefully to what the community has to say. That's why we prepared this post and poll - to see what YOU want your Classic to look like!

The vast majority of complaints were made about the white army shadows. The army shadows were changed from black to white to make it easier to see armies when they are printed on a territory of the same colour (e.g. blue armies over Europe), and to help people with poor eyesight distinguish green from blue. However the white shadows seem to be annoyingly bright. So below are versions of Classic with various army shadows. Please pay attention to clarity and aesthetics and vote for the one you like best. All versions contain the less contoversial improvements of orange Oceania, coloured legend and non-overlapping territory labels. The priority is to focus on the shadows, we can work on the rest later :)

Note: these images were posted with the new [bigimg] bbcode - please use that instead of [img] when posting oversized images to avoid breaking the layout!

Update 1

lackattack wrote:I just want to make something clear - I personally commissioned the Classic touchup and it was not initiated by the Foundry. So please direct all criticisms about the decision to improve Classic on me and not the volunteers of the Foundry who provide us so many great maps to play on!

Update 2

lackattack wrote:The people have chosen... and, as is the will of the masses, we will change the army shadows to White 30%. A runoff vote really isn't necessary considering that all white shadow votes add up to 57%. As Twill mentioned having an option for toggling the artwork is not on the table because it would put other much more interesting and important changes even further behind.

I think this is a Classic the vast majority of members will enjoy. We'll let the dust settle and see how it goes before considering further changes so we can make an informed tweak rather than an emotional one.

Thanks to everyone for voicing their opinion and participating in this important process! We will be sure to notify you of any future major changes long before they happen to avoid anything like this again.

White 30

Easier to read, doesn't hide europe as much as black, higher contrast for people who had trouble with the blue/green thing before.

And it's not so bright :)

I concur with Twill: White 30 FTW

I don't think I'm alone when I say this: The white dots do not look good. The black is much better form and functionality-wise. That... or no shadows.

Thank you so much Lack, you're great.

Agree with Twill. Some maps look great without any shadow or with black, but the Classic map is so dark and regions of the territory are more detailed and shadowed compared to most maps that the 30 white helps make the number visible, just look at 14 on NW Territory to help you decide.

Are people actually taking the time to complain that there has been a tiny change to a map which makes it easier to read now? Wow.....you need a second job.

The "original" update was to white 60.

As someone who is partially colorblind i find that none of them help me with the problem of distinguishing colors. It seems its back to color codes until someone fixes the colors.

I think this map needs to lose the Risk 2210 colour scheme in general, makes it look like shit.
Oh and if you can't see the blue with a black background, get a pair of glasses.

How do we help you read the colours better? And can it be done without causing a riot??

The whole reason for this change was to make the map more readable...

This matter was handled exactly the way it should have been handled by the Staff, thank you for the prompt adjustment to the change. The negative comments about the map were not directed at the people responsible; it is not as if we do not appreciate the work you are doing. Those of us that are more articulate were able to express the fact that the new map was simply not as good as the old map, which is why so many people were upset. The right thing to do (which you did) was to say 'we were trying to help, but apparently not everyone supports our decision - so we'll let you decide for yourselves'. This is not an ego issue or a 'we know better than you do' situation, we simply felt betrayed that you basically destroyed the best map in the game. It is nice to see you (plural) are respectful enough to realize the original changes were not the best.

Lets keep the discussion on the shadows and not on insulting people, m'kay? :)

Thanks

What about a different color code for people with color blindness lol

I dont know, something like changing a template, where they have the option to goof around with the colors

The no-shadow and white, the 3's look mushy, like it flows together.
Look at the 3 in Greenland for the difference between them.

So i'm picking the black for the better contrast and better looking numbers.
(I'm 49 yrs old if that makes a diff)

Any of the Black options or No Shadow option is perfect. Any of the white options are pointless, it makes the map worse than it was before.

White 30% or 40% is much easier on my eyes...

Is a small version of the maps available by any chance?

On a small map the army shadows are more cluttered and that might be a factor worth considering as well when deciding what are the right army shadow.

P.S. - To the colour blind poster: I am colour blind as well...this problem cannot be solved unless you use the colour codes. We must live with it mate. Personally I don't mind the colour codes.
