you could make it so that any cont + iceland is worth an extra 2 men. and have iceland connecting to all countys.

Give it up on Iceland, it won't happen. At this point I've already put too much work into the map without Iceland to change again.

I also want to see the map finished soon but the foundry people doesn't seem to want the map for some reason... I have been thoroughly ignored for the past months.

Considering:
Coleman wrote:After next version I expect to move this out of Map Ideas. Looking forward to it.

There has been several versions since then and I don't know what else to do... Whining usually dosn't improve anything.

It looks like from your thread that it got bumped back due to inactivity. But the quality is excellent. It should be moved on.

Seems to be some great work resulting in a good map. I like it.

Hmm, the idea was to have one country from each continent but maybe I can expand a bit...

If you want realism then at least "Troms" and probably "Nordland" and "Norrbotten" should be a part of the "Laponia" (they all counts as parts of the Barents region).

If you are looking for the sapmi region then you also (for realism) should add "Sör- & Nor-Trondelag" and "Västerbotten", "Ångermanland", "Jämtland" and probably even "Härjedalen". It's a god damned huge area they claim. :D

If you are only after the Laponia area then it should only be "Lappland".

But this is ofc if it's realism you are after, it might not be that good gameplay wise and that has to factor in. And I might be a bit late too probably. :D

Interesting idea but I don't think it's possible except by re-doing the map from scratch, I might give it a shot though just to try :)

another way is to squash the map into a square shape, similar to viewing photos on a wide-screen monitor, which makes people look short and fat. the effect on the map is not as good as true perspective, but i think is a lot easier to do. in this way, we can show a tiny bit of germany at the bottom and not make people think that some of denmark has been cut off.
CoolC wrote:instead of changing to Län I reduced the number in Finland by combining four existing regions and removing Åland from sub-continents, it's now a neutral part of greater Finland. Tried to balance it generally also with regards to number of regions to defend, number that can attack, total number in continent, etc.

i think u've done well with structuring the finnish subcontinents, except that the colour of åland isn't quite right. u've made it a deep green-blue midway between the swedish and finnish colours. this is fine if there is a bonus for middle sweden with åland (as i suggested previously) as well as the existing bonus for finland with åland; however, there isn't such a swedish bonus, so it'll be better if u make it more blue and less green to avoid confusing people.

coolc, are u going to ask gimil to remove the iceland poll so that people don't keep commenting on iceland?

ian. :)

I think you should make the mountains a bit more 'impassable-y' looking.

A compass would probably be useful as I'm sure some people won't know which way is north and which is south so they won't be able to say which part of sweden is south and which is north.
Oh, some people might not even be able to tell sweden from norway, right?

I think Åland needs some work, it's too dark in my opinion.

Make the Laponia symbol more prominent, clearer(also in the legend)

Guys, stop bumping this thread. I think it should be locked at this point, the mapmaker can always request to unlock it whenever he's ready to come back.

Anyways, now I do will be gone for about a month on vacation. I'll update the map with what I got when I get back in august.

The graphics is to dark:/ they hurt my eyes. You dont have to change it, but you should consider it.

I'm back and I've updated the first post. With this revision I've created a separate version with increased light and contrast for the people saying it's too dark, the two versions are otherwise exactly the same. I have not yet decided which I think is the better...

I am reluctant to change the Laponia area since I think it can give good gameplay to have one country from each continent, but I'm thinking of maybe changing the name?

I experimented a bit with adding names to the larger continents (sweden, denmark, norway, finland) but it became too jumbled so I removed it for now. I'm not sure it's necessary since the legend is color coded and you have to assume some geography knowledge atleast?

Poll removed at mapmaker's request; results below.

Include Iceland or not?

Yes, Iceland should be incldued and map renamed The Nordics: 8 votes, 47%

No Iceland. Stick with just Scandinavia, 9 votes, 52%

Total votes : 17

Alright CoolC, you're out of the dead zone... nice to see this is back on track.

Get the updates and the discussion rolling again, and I don't imagine there is too much standing between you and your Drafts stamp. :)

Haleluja! I've been waiting for this to start up :)

I prefer the new lighting, yeti, I recommend a pair of sunglasses :D

I think you're right that you don't need to have the names of the continent, I didn't notice the color coding in the legend.
It would probably help though to have the sub-continents color coded as well, if that's possible(so for example western finland is darker than eastern finland in the legend).

Change log for version 7:

- Åland is blue again
- More work on impassable mountains
- Small connection for Öland
- Improved readability of country names
- A north-arrow to make directions clear
- Slight icon change for Laponia
- Did two versions, to test increased light and contrast

Change log for version 8:

- Added a temporary compass to help decide if a compass in that place is better then the north-arrow
- Increased color coding / separation in legend (as per suggestion)
- Softened the boats a little bit
- Decided to increase the lightning but not as much as v. 7b

I am still drawing the map with the original colors, the increase in light and contrast is added as a last step before producing a jpg. So, I will probably experiment a bit with the levels in future revisions depending on feedback. (Version 7b used br: 39, co: 42. Version 8 used br: 33, co: 36)

I still think just a north arrow is better then a compass but if I get sufficent feedback that says compass I can go with that instead...

Finally a question: should I add a water border between Blekinge - Öland ?

I think a north arrow is enough, and that yes a Blekinge-Öland border would be good.

Have you considered allowing all Baltic Sea Islands to attack each other?

And I noticed there's a territory in Norway called Troms. Isn't it Tromso (o with / through it can't do it on my keyboard)?
