Something's missing though... a title.

I suggest incorporating a hammer & sickle in the title in some way.

this is how historical map should looks. very nice :)

one quick question: somewhere you have Russian names (written in english), somewhere you have English names. if you are ok with this I am too :D . but if you can help with Russian names I will...

@Bastard If you mean territory names, then let me know and I'll change them. If you mean commander names, I'd rather leave them as the more recognizable names.

@DJ I tried it and there was something wonky about it. It didn't fit right. I think maybe it was the font style.

Enough with the "oohs" and "ahs", it's Criticism time!

  • The city texture - bleh. It throws off the hand-painted effect.
  • The outer glow on some of the names, is it necessary? If it doesn't hinder readability, I think it'd be best without it.
  • The flags look a little flat and don't quite "absorb" the texture, if that makes sense.

Hmm... the city texture... what am I going to do about that... dark gray blobs? Something more like what I had on the early versions, little city symbols? Maybe hatched cities instead of dotted? Thoughts?

The outer glow on the names is necessary because they got obscured by the city lines. Though, through carelessness some of the glows are overdone.

I hear ya on the flags. Same for the army groups. Stay tuned.

simple thin horizontal stripes could work for the city texture.

i actually like the city texture, along with the faded look of the pink and yellow areas. however, i'm also interested to see the result of natty's suggestion.

can u keep an eye on the spellings? they were largely correct on page 7 (other than stavrapol on both, which ought to be stavropol), but mistakes have somehow crept in now!

the army group symbols in the legend need to be lined up with each other.

Ok, implemented most suggestions... totally forgot about Ian's mention of Stravopol. I'll change that on my copy.

And as an added bonus, here's the result of an experiement I did on the railroads, the Moscow-Kursk line.

Ah, very good. I like the new railroad much, much better. As for the cities, they're better...but it'd be nice to see something else - something that could legitimately be painted, to make it seem more realistic painting-wise, if that makes sense.

Well, its not a painting. It's a map. I stole the format for the cities directly from the Westpoint Atlas of the Wars of Napoleon. And by stole, I mean was inspired by. Generally, its how maps depict cities when they're close enough for the boundaries to matter, I just enlarged it to accommodate the army numbers.

I can deal with the railways, though a different color or more black so they don't get lost in the rest of the map would work. Right now it kind of blends with everything around it.

What about making the borders light gray or something? I'll have to experiment.

Hmmm ... That might work, or just a straight grey might work as well.

See, I'm not sure I like the pipeline style railroads. I just wish I cold figure out a way to make the traditional RR symbol/style to work.

Anyway, here are some border try outs to separate the borders from the RR lines. Personally, i like the dashed version. I know I did it on South Africa, but it does look good and I think it has an application that works to more than just one map.

I think I like the white borders. Easier to see both the borders and the rail lines IMO.

I like the grey ones. They're clear, but not as in-your-face as the white ones.

Also, I think the border between Minsk oblast & Latvia could be made clearer.

This.

I think it could stand to have a bit darker grey borders, even.

The whites are by far the most clear, and that's not a bad thing when speaking of who can attack who. But naturally, we can't have the maps look untraditional ;-)

If all the borders were dashed then they might work, but not the way you have so that part of the borders are normal and part are dashed...

Well yeah... the reason they're only partly dashed is because its a giant pain to dash them all. i just did some to show effect.
