Wow. I love this. A good bit going on for a fairly small map, but very straightforward. Nicely done.

I think the background would look better if you found something that looks old and weathered. Something that suggests "jungle ruin".

For the title: Mayan Empire

For the title, how about just Maya. That seems to me to be the most simple and correct label for this map.

You could also consider something like "Mayan Cities" or "Mayan Kingdoms"

Hey cool it uses those road type bonuses I used on Thyseneal/American Heartland. Also the main bonus structure reminds me of that Westeros map I started a while ago. Basically that means "Cool I like it!"

Also I think that's a cool region/time period.

Sweet.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Glad you like the map!

Mayan Empire would be misleading as a name, seeing as there was no single "Mayan Empire". "Maya" could work, it's just not very descriptive... I could consider it though. "Mayan Cities/Kingdoms" aren't entirely accurate either, they were more like city-states... and "Mayan City-states" would just be overly convoluted.

Well, you have Oaktown to thank for most of the gameplay design so far, I took everything from his map and made only slight changes.

I'll look into the graphics more closely later... when I get a better idea of the graphical direction I want to take.

Maya Colonization - although this may sound a bit like Spanish period

I still prefer Mayan Nations.

"Nations" suggests something akin to First Nations (multiple groups of people). Looking around my history books, they are only referred to as a "Mayan Nation," but within that nation sometimes there is reference to "Mayan Peoples."

Mayan Nation (singular) could possibly work as well.

Or if I were to go for something more elaborate, I could maybe go for "Maya: The Classic Era" with "Maya" being the main title.

That sounds much better in my opinion.

Another idea could be "Mayan Realms" - as much as with "Kingdoms", I'm just trying to find names for those city-centered, and probably rather territorially fluid political entities :-)

I think I'll go with this.

Maya: The Classic Era

Also, gameplay question:

Should I consider a bonus for the sea routes? They're kinda like trade routes as well...

Perhaps a +1 for holding the North Sea and the South Sea, but I don't see it as really needing to be included as a trade route. Also Cozumel seems to be a fairly useless region as it stands, since one can just use Colhá, if that makes sense. Maybe change the Colhá connection to Kintil, or the Cobá connection to Ek Balam?

Holding both seas for +1? Who would ever go for that?

I was figuring something along the lines of +1 or +2 for holding a sea route (north sea or south sea) and both regions that connect to it. For example, Zempoala - North Sea - Dzibichaltun would give you +1 or +2.

It's very useful actually... without it, 1v1 games start with 12 regions. I will however probably change the sea connection.

Already looks better than anything I ever did with this map!

Regarding the naming, maybe I missed it if somebody already posted this but some of the cities depicted here aren't even remotely Mayan, but all existed during what is called the Classic Era of Mesoamerican civilization. The Mayans never got up into the Valley of Mexico, for example. There's no perfect name for this map, as you can either be succinct or accurate. The most historically correct title might be "Mesoamerica: the Classic Era." It doesn't entirely suck.

Thanks Oaktown!

I'm not really sure about the name, I could go for either version. Maya has a nice ring to it, but like you said, isn't entirely accurate...

I could dig this name.

I like this name as well, and I really like the map. It has a great feel, warm with a nice pop. Great work as always natty.

Ok, before I change the name of the map (again), is there any input on the proposed sea route bonus?

Hm, it's an alright idea, but really, with the varied way to achieve a bonus on this map already, it might not be needed.

If sea routes were a bonus, do you think that would negate the impact of them being a way to move across the board?

I don't know, if it's just a small bonus it might work. But you're also right, I'm not sure if it's needed.
