Sorry I've not had time for a bit folks but today I just decided to have a go at this and to hell with coursework deadlines :D

Changes
-Legend font has been changed to fit in.
-Minimap has been reintroduced and a new bonus box put at the bottom
-Extra texture and colour has been added to the land, all on layers so any tweaks will be very easy to do.
-Sea routes have been redrawn
-The inlet in north jutland has been widened, it should be clear now that the territs don't border
-The pixelation of blekyng & burg appears to have been caused by the Yellow colour having too much contrast with the black border-I couldn't do anything about this so I switched it to a turquoise
-Sweden and HRE labels have been removed.

Now-now, no need to fail on our account... You just have to update once a month to keep the thread active, plenty of maps floating around here for several months to a year.

Looks pretty good, couple things I see. The colors between land and sea are fairly similar which doesn't offer a lot of contrast. The land is definitely a light color, so perhaps try a darker shade of blue for the sea? I realize the yellow didn't work for the one region, but now you've got 3 bonuses that are a greenish color, try another color and see if it works and doesn't give those outlines a pixelly look. Maybe a dark orange?

Again, get to this when you can, DON'T FAIL!

I think you should drop the runes in the mini map. The elder futhark is about 700 years off on a 13th century map. :)

This actually makes a bit of sense - particularly as they don't really look like they belong there (ie they don't really blend in very well)

Another good point - it's sad to see the yellow disappear - I think a little bit more colour variance should give the map a bit more life... Are you sure it was the colour causing the pixellation? That sounds a little odd to me

Ho folks, I've done red baron's suggestions as well as getting rid of the runes- they were just a quick experiment at a new sig but I wasn't happy with them either.

The yellow thing is an interesting point but its definitely what's causing it: I can use any other colour I like but as soon as it gets too much contrast it pixels out (or more likely, the pixels become visible) anyway, I've got the best orange I can without the pixels coming back and I think its an improvement, I'll post up the new map when I get time :)

Sadly it would appear that development of this map has stalled. If/when the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the Foundry Moderators will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system, after an update has been made. ;-)

The Resurrection

Postby Balsiefen on Sat Jun 12, 2010 6:31 am

Well I'm back again-sorry to drop off the map like that but stuff rather got on top of me and I pretty much dropped everything for the last half-year. (in the mean time of this my computer died so I've had to redownload all my font files and Gimp-Its very lucky that I'd backed up the map file.)
But now exams are behind me (until next jan anyway) and for a while I'm in a vacuum between AS and A level so I should get enough time to myself to update reasonably often (no promises!) Lets hope I can see this one through this time. :D

Changes
-Lost the runes.
-Darkened the sea and tweaked the land colour.
-a few other things but I've forgotten.

I'm thinking of adding some sort of border to the lower legend, I'll play around with that for the next update.

I started with the small on Japan. :| :P

But it does look like you're at the point of us seeing the large too and lets check the color blindness filters. I hate to say it, but the border by the yellow region has a bit of jaggedness/pixelish issue.

Thanks guys, really nice to see interest so quickly. :)

I prefer to start with the small map to avoid the hassle of shrinking it only to find half your territories are too small to work.

I couldn't see the pixels at first but a closer look and... ouch.
I'll get on to that, it may end with having to swap the dark red and light blue colours if I cant find a colour which works and isn't to similar to the dark red.

Edit: I've also run colour blindness tests-the Dark blue and purple are a little similar but not beyond distinction I think. Earlier in the thread I switched the colours of south and mid jutland to help with colour blindness but nothing else has been raised since.

Right I've experimented with three different colours, do you think any of them work?

I've also experimented a little with the layer masks to see if a different approach will have any effect, what do you think?

I took me a while, but I finally figured out you changed the colors of Blekyng & Burgendaland, I think the bright orange works the best.

It does my heart good to know that you had backed up your map files and were thus able to resume work after your hardware problems. It saddens me when I see active mapmakers who have been posting steadily tell of redoing their maps from scratch because they lost the file. Keep up the good work.

I always make copies of my latest map files and put them on fileden in a private folder, every few weeks. Seems like a good practice. Although it seems I still end up redoing my maps from scratch, now and then... :?

Yea, what sucks is I lost all my font files so I had to spend ages trawling the internet and redownloading them all.

Just a heads up, especially for passing mods, as this is looking good, I'll be restarting my VIKING INVASION map.

Graphically I'd say this map kicks ass. You need a large map and I'd like to see something with the triple digits.
