Like the map.

A minor issue. The "U" in Ulundi touches the border of Ewoi, making it look like it E. connects to Amsterdam. I realize repeate play makes it clear, but why cause unneeded misunderstandings?

otherwise like the map.

Helix, border between Bloemfontain and Winburg could be redrawn. the fort looks that is touching with Winburg and also there is not clear that Bloemfontain has also border with Potchefstroom.

I am so gld to finally welcome a South African map to CC. There was a nice one in development about the current RSA, but that never got finished so this is great news. Just two possible spelling errors: Levdenburg should be Leydenburg I think, and I am far more unsure about this one, but Donottar may need to be Dunottar. I could be completely wrong though, and anyway I am excited about this one getting final approval - good luck!

where it does look like levdenburg
I'm not sure about the ship tho, since http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Dunottar_Castle was only built in 1889

Is this the same town that I found in Wikipedia which is now called Lydenburg? I think the cartographer of that map you linked to did not have to go through a Map Foundry where people would point out how the letter "y" is lying directly on top of a river.

I picked the RMS Dunottar Castle because of its use a troop ship during the second Boer war... the idea of this map was to depict the various conflicts in SA in the last half of the 19th c. So things like ship names are nods to that. The 1885 is more a guide than the actual year represented... i didn't want the map to be confused with any future modern SA maps.

As for Levdenburg... obviously map standards were much lower then. I'll change it to Leydenburg with the next update.

I know this is late in the stage to make this comment, but I feel like the map insert on this is waaaaay too big. Seems kind of silly to have the realy map and then another map that is only half it's size. Looks strange, but whatevs! I feel like it would be better with a list or a smaller less definded map.

Great map otherwise!

wow what a refreshing beta map! us simple players have been bombarded with all these complex beta maps lately and this is a refreshing departure from those. very well done Industrial Helix!
I have one issue though. I play mostly 1 vs. 1 sequential games and prefer maps that dont give the player with the first turn a huge advantage. This is sadly one of those maps, since the first player starts with 12 regions. I'm not sure that could be adjusted but if it could be reduced to 11 starting regions that would make me much more satisfied to play this map 1 vs. 1!

Willy! :-)

Ok, I made the suggested changes to the large map... I figured I'd let you guys take a gander at Swaziland in gray before I make the changes to the small map.

Forts and ships double bonuses, you had the Pietermaritzburg fort, so it doubled the Transvaal bonus.
Read the bottom right of the map...

I think I see the misunderstanding here.

Nikola thinks it means that the bonuses only double for one round. This is not possible with the XML, bonuses are static and can't be made to change round-to-round.

That bonuses only double once means that if you hold a fort, your bonuses are doubled, but if you hold two forts, your bonuses won't be quadrupled, ie. they won't be doubled twice. Only once.

Ahhh see that's what confused me when writing the XML

Why isn't fileden letting me download the XML to change :(

The reason I ask is because the file I have saved is on a different computer...

Pretoria concerns me. It makes the Transvaal bonus far more obtainable. I suggest a bonus value decrease to four, or let Leydenburg connect to Amsterdam or Rustenburg connect to Potchefstroom. I prefer a border fix over a bonus decrease, myself.

I think the new color for Swaziland resolves the problem.

I think the current value of +5 for Transvaal is fitting. True only three territories to defend, but they span 5 different bordering bonuses. And at seven territories, it's by far the largest bonus, with second place having only five territories.

I think the wording on the bottom "Bonuses double only once." should be clearer. Some people might think that it is pointless to attack a fort or ship if they are only going to get the "double bonus" once.

I wondered how you implemented this functionality into XML and was going to be very impressed! :shock and awe:

Perhaps a clearer wording would be "Forts & ships contain weapons to arm your nation and will double (but not redouble) each regional bonus."

I also think there should be further clarify regarding the "double once" notation. I would suggest something along these lines:

"Forts and ships contain weapons to arm your nation. Holding any fort or ship will double all the region bonuses."

What about "Holding any fort or ship will double any regional bonus?
