I like it, very different from other maps. How do get to Alcatraz?

It's a good view, you'll have to get rid of the clouds in the bottom left though. If you want it to work, it's gotta be believeable

those arent actually clouds, it was an effect I put on the water. doesnt look that good though, easy to ditch. I was attempting to get the look of waves coming in from the pacific, didnt work though.

How do get to Alcatraz?
you dont. yet. but i can make it so you can.

glad to see you've posted this johloh. how many territories & bonus regions are you thinking? Some of the current territories are hard to distinguish because they're so small. And too bad the richmond bridge didn't come through in the satelite photo.

Quick thoughts on territories: Alameda makes more sense as two, not three; Piedmont should be nestled in the middle of Oakland, above the lake; the Berkeley division seems arbitrary, and leaves one very small; how about an outer and inner Richmond maybe?; what about making the GG Bridge a territory rather than just an attack route?

agreed. that was the initial way i had it...(navy base / residential)

Piedmont should be nestled in the middle of Oakland, above the lake
agreed. ill put it in.

yeah most of my east bay stuff was pretty arbitrary. I was just trying to get something up to see if people were interested in it. if youre interested i could post a version with the east bay blank and you could draw on lines that I could follow, since youre more familiar (i grew up in half moon bay)

what about making the GG Bridge a territory rather than just an attack route?
sounds good.

I'd be happy to be able to contribute. You're not far off in the east bay: you more or less have what I'd do: Alameda, the former naval air station (now Alameda Point), east oakland, downtown, piedmont, the port, emeryville, berkeley, Cal, Albany, and maybe Redwood and Tilden for the two hills territories. Then West Contra Costa County is easy enough to assign names to.

Nice early work.

I really like the concept of the satellite photo. This map could be a definite winner. Keep going I'd love this to see final forge.

WIN

I can only comment when some names are in (you guys confuse me with names).

But very good thus far, and a completly new approach to a map, I LOVE IT.

You orinigally posted this in my thread, but I'm okay with it as long as both maps can be used. But it may be hard to get final forged because of the satalite 3D view.

yup. none of the "heavyweights" have weighed in with their opinions

the white lines dividing territorites are really elegant against the "color burn" efect on the city. i like how the colors go with teh territories.

the dotted lines (are these BART or ferries?) are a little confusing. is there a way to rethink these connections?

Just my opinion but the Satillite veiw may be cool, but it's probably bad for playability.

i like the idea of a satelite view and think the map could be good but i think that the map could benefit from continent bonuses and names because then it seems that a large part of the map is done and it is easier to comment on improvements.

im going to be discontinuing this map for awhile...might come back to it in awhile. gonna let fircoal work on his bay area map and see how that goes.

came along nicely johloh... I just hope I get to forge before you! I know you've heard plenty of my comments, but here are the latest, about which others may have suggestions.

Give the map a title; right now it looks like it's called johloh. :)

Continent distinctions within the city are still not entirely clear... my crappy eyes have trouble with the color subtleties. Easy for me since I'm local, but perhaps less so for everybody else. Heavier lines help, but could be confused for unpassable boundaries.

Water looks much better, but still a bit weird. I like the subtle texture, but the lighter blur marks are too uniform.

Somebody will point out that the Alameda Naval Air Station closed years ago, and I know you already know that, so I'm pre-empting your critics and challenging them to come up with a better name for that territory. It's called Alameda Point now, which may be confusing next to Alameda. Ditto the Refineries territory, which you could lump under Point Richmond, but I think it is more clear as is.

I agree with the statements about the water, right now it kinda looks like it's floating on top of something... Not sure what you could do, maybe something similar to Malta where it looks like the land continues under the water? Having good water will be critical to acheiving success because of the map's unique angle. You may also want to add a horizon, with a sunset or something, to help clarify the angle.

oh yeah i forgot to credit oaktown for the help on that version.

he helped me set up a lot of the territories in the east bay as well as the names. and gave me advice on the whole map over the last few versions....

thanks!

i agree the water is very very critical. and im having trouble with it. you should have seen it a few tries ago. horizon, i disagree. I dont think the angle is steep enough to see a horizon....if anyone thinks they can do good 3d looking water i would def like to see someone try, i have no idea how to do it well....(i can send you the layered files)

my crappy eyes have trouble with the color subtleties
ill try and work on the colors more, its hard with the transparent nature of the coloring...

no love?

i like it but... but no love for the peninsula? South of SF is more intregal to the bay area than North Bay, San Pablo, ect... but way cool map
