If it takes place in 1914, it really shouldn't include the USSR...

OMG, yeah... I'm a bit tired (it's 4am and I've been working on this draft for some hours). Russian Empire, of course ;) (fixed)

ps. Boy, I gotta tell you figuring out the territories and bonuses for this map wasn't easy... Try finding any decent pre-wwi asian maps... There's tons of maps of that era of Europe, but good maps of Asia are a lot scarcer...

Also, Mongolia would belong to china, in a sense... I just noticed: it declared independency in 1911 but that was firmly established only by 1921.

btw, throw in the great wall as a natural barrier and choke point feature... i think it would add to the uniqueness.

Glad you like it. I agree the left side may need some territory merging, to ensure legibility on both small & large.

That's a great idea! I'll do that.

I'm a little surprised to see Finland not included on this map, but I guess you're the expert.

Well technically Finland was under Russian rule at the time, but it was an autonomous region... Also for legibility reasons it's better left out. Anyway Finland became independet in 1917 so it's only a 3 year anachronism...

Yes, yes, I will be posting all relevant gameplay information, but I'm waiting for the mods to tell me if I can do this as a map pack with orient express or do they need to stay as separate entries. So I'll know where to post that info ;)

Basically the gameplay dynamics are pretty much same as in orient express, only territories and bonus areas are different...

I'm thinking of removing a few stations for legibility (and because East Russia has way too many of them).

These will probably go:

Ulan Ude
Blagov. (forgot the full name)
Tayshet

And I'll probably move Manzhouli so it's fully inside china.

Also I think I'll try to find a station in Northern Russia which I can put on the map... there aren't any there currently.

I'm still working on the next version, but there will be impassables that can only be passed by train...

I don't know if its just me, but it seems like the railroad blends into the background. But, other than that its a good start, can't wait to play this.

Yes, that rail line is just temporary, the graphics aren't very refined yet.

I have updated the first post with a short gameplay plan.

just a note.

There shouldn't be territory named Sverdlovsk. That name is for Yakov Sverdlov who was a Bolshevik leader and in 1913 he was probably in jail :)
Maybe it should be called Ural (couldn't find any info of that territory name during Russian Empire)

I noticed you did that on Orient express. I think that is a great idea. I think on of them should either be the Ob, or Lena rivers.

These will probably go:

Ulan Ude
Blagov. (forgot the full name)
Tayshet

I agree when I was looking at this earlier, I was thinking that there were too many stations around Baikal.

Any way, maybe it's just me but I'm not really fond of the rectangles for the station. I think you should do this in the same style as the orient express. Especially, if it ends up being a map pack.

i like this a LOT man.. but its going to be a WIDE open map unless you get some barriers in there. I dont mind a wide open map, but its a different type of play as in the regional bonuses usually are not worth squat because you cannot protect them.

I know in that central region to central south there are a lot of mountains you can add as barrier if you were inclined, the yellow river is a huge natural and real life barrier to regions, and the great wall thing again.

If you decide to go with this barrier limited version though, i still like it.

There will be impassables... as a spoiler I can name a few:

Ural mountains between western & central russia.

The great wall of china between Inner Mongolia and Gansu, Shanxi & Hebei.

Rivers... Ob & Lena are some I have considered.

There are also mountains in the east, which I'm considering.... I have to research them more though.

As for North Russia, I know a rail line goes into Yakutsk, but I have no idea when it was built nor where does it go there from. Small anachronisms don't matter since this is a CC map, not a history lesson, but I'd like to keep any really absurd things out (ie. putting in a rail line that was only built in the 1980:s or something like that). Either way I'd like to put at least one station there.

Also for Southern russia, I'm going to extend the Almaty line to Turkmenistan.

Of course i allready checked that :)
my point is that in 1913, there was no Sverdlovsk Oblast (it was created in 1934). I don't mind whatever is it called (it's your choice) but if you go for historic accuracy, then Sverdlovsk is wrong

and another nitpicking :)

Almaty is renamed in 1992. Before that it was known as Alma-ata. And even before that it was known as Verny (till 1922)

Russians obviously loved to change names of cities/provinces :)

Thanks for those nuggets of knowledge... I'll take it into consideration when I resume work on the map.

natty, in Orient Expres topic you wrote that you can have date in map names (only in Orient Expres or every from this pack?). I must ask from what date/period is this map? because Mongolian part was build very later (after II. world war) as Russian and Chinese.

This map is around 1913-1914 or so.

Anyway I don't mind slight (heh) anachronisms. The gameplay would be quite boring with only 1 railway...
