There's no right and wrong here! You may like one font better than the other, sure declare that and declare why you think so, but don't profess it as the "truth". Because there is none! I actually like the old font for the very reasons you don't like it. It's a little humorous and funny which fits this map quite well. There are symbols of animals covered with colourful glow on the map so having a very serious and strict font looks strange! This is a happy map !

Sorry but yes there is. There are some things that can be objectively evaluated, like if a typeface is appropriate for the theme of the image. Like if you were to use a futuristic cyberpunk font on a map of medieval england. That would be objectively horrible.

The objective truth is that the old font is horrible and doesn't fit this or any other map. It's tacky, tasteless, cheesy, and inappropriate for the theme of the map. Africa is not a funny and whimsical la-la-land. Implying that it is simply condescending and racist. This very map was made as a prize of sorts for a charity drive to help the impoverished people of Africa, and a "funny and humorous" font is EXTREMELY inappropriate in that context.

The suffering of african children is not "funny". It's not "humorous". It's a tragedy and it should be addressed with taste.

Having said that good or bad, right or wrong concepts are somewhat questionable for the art because those are subjected to time, the costumes and the collective judgments, I have no problems in using a font or the other. There's no way to say that a font shouldn't be used, simply because it's just matter of personal opinion.
In any case this has not to be a tragic map. As you can see there's no SOS Africa logo on the map, this because this is not the SOS Africa map but the reward map for a charity event.
Now using a bit imagination, let me make an example, if I was a very rich man and I would be able to ask to someone to build a car for a Africa charity event, to give away with a sort of auction, I wouldn't ask to someone to create a car that makes people sad. Who will drive a car that make sad! Probably the car can be customized a bit or painted with some african colors, but I can't ask to paint the image of a poor child suffering on a car door just because the car was done for a charity event to raise funds for people who is suffering.

Back on our map, our task isn't and wasn't to give to everyone a map to remember all time about the sufference in the african continent, but more just a new africa themed map as reward for a good cause.
So for the font use one or the other is the same for me, up to the community to decide...as said imo it's just matter of common taste.
For the elephants, I'll turn them.

I'm not saying you should make the map "sad", just that it should be in good taste, and using a font that looks like it's straight from a childrens' book isn't in good taste considering the subject...

The old font looks like it belongs on a map like doodle earth, and if that's what you want to do, to create a "doodle africa" then that's fine with me, but the rest of the map doesn't look like that... the look and style of the map looks more like a "serious" geographical representation of Africa, not a joke map like doodle earth.

Another thing: the border between Western Sahara / Algeria is really small, to the point that it nearly looks like a 4-way border on the small version, and it's unclear. I think you should tweak it a bit to make the connection more clear.

It's really sick to imply that the font is racist just because it's a happy font! Some people see racism in everything, even where there's none.

Maybe you could put up a poll nobodies, to determine what font the foundry prefers!? Maybe throw in a third alternative font as well.
