You should get rid of the ice and keep the N.

Doesn't hurt to give it a look... thoughts?
Personally I can go either way - it doesn't effect game play, and I've been able to get used to it both ways.

edit: had to update the image to replace two lost elements... also made the N and the pole marker a wee bit bigger, as they are very small against the arctic sea.

can you put both versions in that post please?

I like the Ice Cap...but perhaps you could argue it shouldn't be there...because all the bombs that have been dropped have melted away all the ice. :(

Hmmm - Nah I disagree - as this was the 'threat' of cold war - not the actuallity... (until the game starts!)

I also like the icecap because at first glance you may not notice that this is a polar view of the world. I didn't.

i like the ice too.. perhaps a poll for it?

Hmmm... If this were the case than the polar caps having melted would diminish the land area considerably... basically causing oaktown to have to redraft the entire map!

LOL Just BS'ing... this map should be fun. Good work!

I could be wrong, but if the all of the ice at the north pole were to melt, it wouldn't raise the sea level... floating ice displaces the same amount of water as is contained in that ice.

But I liked the point about the map not being immediately identifiable as polar view without the ice... I'm leaning toward putting it back in, but you all can keep discussing.

yep, so it was... thanks. I'd been updating my other map and must have just wiped it out.

Here are both, with and without:

the 'with' version is far superior.

the 'without' version looks like something is missing.

i like the ice cap, has something sweet, and make the map more complete. 8)

without looks a bit dry, but also nice though...

The icecaps melting would most definitely raise sea level... but I was just joking anyway.
I do prefer the version with the icecap though.

Sounds like we're going with the ice cap.

And the science teacher in me has to respond to the ice cap confusion. In the arctic we have an ice cap, which is a mass of ice covering water/a small land area... if the entire polar ice cap were to melt there would be no change to our sea level, because floating ice already displaces a volume of water equal to its weight. Water expands when it freezes. The polar ice cap grows and retreats each year, yet we experience no seasonal rise in sea level. Llikewise, the polar ice cap was at one point 41% lower this year than historical levels, yet my seaside town of Santa Barbara still has the same beach it had 40 years ago.

The story is differnt elsewhere in the world, however. Most of the Antarctic ice sheet (it's not an ice pack) is on land - if that all melted and ran into the sea I would find myself retreating to the hills fast! Ditto Greenland, melting glaciers, etc.

So yeah, we should all be driving Priuses.

yeah, when you look at the map, there is a big blank hole where the ice cap used to be.
