Re: LOWER EGYPT V8 (p4) [I] - New Colours

Cairns its true that the Nile Delta would make more sense to have the colors that you are using, but unfortunately when most people hear Egypt, they think of sand, pyramids, and pharaohs.

Either way if you are using cool colors, i think you should use more of a watery texture. The sandy texture would go better with warm colors, as they remind people of sand and deserts.

In reality, its a bit of both sand and fertile land, in stark contrast.

I just don't know where all the blues and purples came from, I would love to see more realistic greens, and beiges.

Yes i agree it's a bit of both in stark contrast, however i am not making this as a representation of an overhead landscape shot from some satellite. You asked for the colours of Egypt, ad a darker less watery repsentation. These are colours that were used in ancient times.

The following colours are - continent, and there is only blue to reprensent the river and sea and one continent of purpple.

Alexandria = Karchi
Buto = red
Mendes = Yellow
Tanis = Green
Bubastic = Brown
Memphis = sandy orange
Sile = Purple.

There is one purple and two blues

All continent colours are treated with 75 Average 50% Plasture texture and a Gaussian Blur of 0.5%

So....I have replaced the SILE purple with a darkish brown, but that is all i am prepared to change.
I prefer to use the colours as are in the version below Version 9.

i am planning that Upper Egypt will have more yellows etc for the desert, and the new kingdon map will be colours of blacks, and golds and browns. :)

Take the texture off the Syphix, because it looks like a part of the map.

it already has a plaster texture applied to it.

Now have you updated the development atlas yet...
Battle of Gazala has been quenched
Rail Euirope is in Final Forge
and Lower Egypt is in Map Foundry

none of these presently exist in their right categories. :wink:

i very much like the way this is progressing, colors included.
my only suggestion is this:
maybe you'll consider varying the texture between the legend, land, and water?
the uniformity certainly doesn't ruin the map, but the rivers and lakes are the only things that stand out as distinct.
if you're going to distinguish the rivers and lakes, some further variation may help overall.

It's quite a nice-looking map. Should be entertaining to play on.

A couple small visual concerns:
could the Am-Khent terit name be moved closer to its army circle? I think you might be asking for trouble by having the per-sopdu name closer to the am-khent circle than the am-khent name is.
Also, the tjeb-nut-jek border with khasu doesn't stand out very well compared to the other borders. Perhaps the border and the khasu bits (name, circle, star) could be moved up a bit to give the t-n-j terit name and the northern border a bit of breathing room.

so my guess is that this is 10-15 % of Greek Egypt?
What century or centuries is it, and will upper egypt be from the same time?

looks pretty good!

Thanks snufkin for your question.
http://www.ancientegyptonline.co.uk/nomes.html
Please refer to reference material link above.

It seems that "nomes" were more prominent in upper egypt than lower egypt. but i would say that this is across a spectrum of periods. I would not want to be too specific about making the map on a time period, I am more interested in capturing the flavour of the three kingdoms for this what will become a trilogy, and will link in with the Valley of the Kings map.

The reference site does provide the map reference for upper egypt, however, the new kingdom will be based on what we called Sudan now, where most of the gold for egypt appears to have been sourced.

I will not be adding the invasions by the assyrians, romans, hitites etc as i wish these maps to be very uncomplicated even though i know that is the antithesis of what the entire ancient egyptian civilization was about.

glad to hear you like the map. :)

Version 10

Changes made:
1. Because of the comments from snufkin about there begin greek influence which isn't out of place, i have renamed the territory of Buto to Xios because it is more accurate.
2. Also changed is the continent of Babastis to Heliopolis - Heliopolis is more central to overall area.
3. A bevel has been applied to all the territories to provide an impression of raised land around the river.
4. Differentiation of the river to the sea is applied via colour, and the black border around the river edges removed.

i like the bevelling, great addition.

will you be working on the mini-map on the weekend ? i get the impression from it that Am-Khent is a part of Sile. because of that i also find myself leaning towards the screen to tell the colours of Sile and Heliopolis apart. would it stand out more if you switched the colour of Heliopolis with that of Memphis ?

i was going for the all-over-the-wall plastered effect like in a mural. i think it works well. :)

Im not sure if its the bevel, but the lakes look like they are popping out, rather than being lower than the land

The text is kind of hard to read, especially in the places with three dashes (like Tjeb-nut-jek). I dont know if there is any way to fix this, but if you could that would be great.

Some of the continents dont look like they do on the mini map. Alexandria looks green on the map, but purple on the mini map. Tanis looks much darker on the real map. There are some other examples too, but there arent too bad.

I cant read whay it says about the boats over the mini map

Looks good, cant wait to play it!! :P

Yes...you know like wall of toomb murals.....but i see what you're saying about negative space....so i'll have a dabble with some other textures in other areas apart from the land.
