I want to include them on my map, but I don't want to confuse people who may think they are territories

yeah, i wouldn't mess with the country borders, but the territory borders weren't drawn by me to perfectly line up with real world boundaries anyway - in reality the countries have far more administrative regions, and on this map they've been merged for the sake of making it playable. So if you need to bump a border a few pixels up or down to fit an army circle, by all means do.

As for other islands, this is a graphics competition so you should do what you think looks best. When all is said and done the gameplay side of things will be reopened, (don't want to change the layout mid-contest) so there could be further discussion about the attack routes and territory locations AFTER we've got a winner.

I'm about 50% done, still tracing out borders, but I'm doing the circles and text as I go.

Yep, I've already scrapped one idea, and I'm trying to force idea #2 to work. How damned annoying is the gap between G3, G4, G5, and G6?

Having never actually played the original map, I'm beginning to wonder if this is all worth it! :D

While not quite the foundry luminary that gim is, I too would be willing to be an extra pair of eyes and/or sounding-board for anyone (pro or amateur) working thru a concept, given that a rough sketch on a legal pad that I fax to CC headquarters probably won't cut it as a map design.

I might through my n00bish hat into the ring on the Central America map. I'm just starting with map gfx making, however, so I might need a bunch of luck to stand any chance in this one

Is it okay to draw the water that runs through Panama in order to preserve proper geography, or would that be a no-no because it might make gameplay slightly confusing?

I hope you do create something, lgoasklucyl... it'll just be you and bunch of other hat-wearing noobs. ;)

As for gameplay changes, you can lobby for them after the competition is said and done, but for now try to keep the map as-is so everybody is working with the same material.

Thanks for the quick response :D

I had no intent on changing the gameplay, simply plopping the little divider of water in there. Nothing important though, it just didn't really look like Panama

Antarctica is a work that's taken 3 months... this one I have 3 weeks tops, so don't expect too much :) I think everyone is in the same boat here, which makes it a nice even playing field. I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with, it should be a very interesting competition

The question was raised as to whether or not somebody could submit multiple entries, and while there's a part of me that likes the thought of encouraging creativity, the answer to this is has to be no.

The work that goes into making one map file is fairly significant; the work that goes into tweaking the layers of that file is pretty simple. If everybody who creates one file also makes three more with different colors or effects, there could be dozens of entries and the competition will be something of a joke. If you're toying with more than one idea, go with the best one... quality over quantity please!
