Optimus Prime Retires!

This weeks story:

Optimus Prime Retires...?

Hi, and welcome to the News Hound.

Optimus Prime retires as a Tournament Director. Yes, you read correct, Optimus Prime retires after a year of being a Tournament Director. The reason behind this retirement is because Optimus Prime and his wife, Luxurious, are having a baby in December, he's starting a Web Design business in a few weeks and school is getting busy. So Optimus Prime felt it was time to pass the torch to others.
But don't worry! Optimus Prime is NOT leaving ConquerClub, he will stay here and do what he does best and enjoys the most, running tournaments. Which I'm sure lots of our readers are glad for.

During his time as Tournament Director, he saw the Tournaments go from 20-30 running at the same time to over 250. His Tournament Handbook made it easy for everyone interested in making tournaments understand how to do it. The Lockerbot and Moverbot not only kept the Tournament Forums nice and tidy, but this little fellow worked all over the Forums, all from General Discussions to Suggestions and Bug Reports.

What do the other two Tournament Directors, Steelhorse and Night Strike, have to say about this?
The News Hound have spoken to both of them to get their comments.

Night Strike wrote:From the desk of the Tournament Directors:

Hello again fellow organizers. Things have been fairly crazy ever since school started back up, but hopefully we're all managing to stay afloat. As many of you may have noticed, Optimus Prime has chosen to step down from his position as Tournament Director. He has always been dedicated to his tournament organizing and used that dedication and the Director position to bring prominence to the tournament forums. Today, we average around 50 threads in the Create/Join forum and 250 in the Ongoing forum. Much of this growth can be attributed to his dedication and support for the tournaments.

This change has thrown myself and Steelhorse for a bit of a loop, but we feel that the tournaments will still be the best place in the forums. In light of this change, we are not looking to add another director at this time. Gilligan and Natewolfman have been great Tournament Assistants, and we will be looking to them to help us out with some of the bigger projects. When the time comes to add another director or assistant, we'll come calling (so please don't ask before then).

As a challenge to everybody: now that Optimus is no longer a Director, you all had better keep up with the great tournaments we know he'll provide. ;)

~Night Strike & Steelhorse

This week we sat down for an interview with hulmey.
Next week, our interview will be with the player and organiser, qwert. If you have any questions you can go post them in this thread. An interview with lackattack, the site's creator is coming soon as well. This is the last week for questions so post them here.

Now, on with the interview!

Q: Hello, hulmey.

A: Yo

Q:How did you find this website?

A: Discovered this amazing website with a couple of work colleagues during a rather extended lunch break

Q: Why did you join CC?

A:Played and loved the game since I was 10

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A: I can't remember. Although I'm not a keen tournament player really

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: Seemed like fun.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A: About 1 year

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A: Great Britain vs USA

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: LOL, wanted to show those yanks that Britannia rules the world

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A: Nobody really. But I like the way Marval makes his tournaments look good (graphically)

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A:Hmm, I didn’t really know it would be such a challenge and a headache. Spent hours randomly selecting who will play who by writing their name on a piece of paper and then putting it in a bag, like a lottery lol.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A: I have 1 completed tournament. 4 ongoing and no plans for running anymore just yet!

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A: 1.Great Britain vs USA (finished)
2. Assassins of the World (final round)
3. A New World Begins (final round)
4. There can only be one : Terminator (half way through)
5. FA BARCLAYS doubles premiership ( 5 matchs of 38 played)

Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?

A: Assassins of the world because it is unique and FA Barclays Double premiership because of my love for football.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A: Don’t really have a fav tournament, sorry. One that sticks out is when I lost in the final to Jack of all Trades. Think the tournament was called Qwert’s bracket tournie

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A: Run

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A: Doubles, but singles is easier to organize

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A: I prefer to choose them

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A:I don’t play in a lot of tournaments unless I have received a pm about it!

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: Not very because it was against 3 of my best friends whilst we were playing at work!

Q:Have you ever won a tournament?

A: No

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A:Losing to Jack of all trades in qwert's tournament.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A:Drawing in players that would not normally play in tournaments

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A:World Cup 2010 by MarVal and amazzony

Q: What is the best Tournament that you think has been underestimated?

A: The above.

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A:No never.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A: I think the key is organisation and planning ahead.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A: I like to mass pm players. Send out maybe 1000 invites via pm and about 50 join. The rest apply through the forums, but its usually the same crowd from there.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A:People think its so easy, but its not!

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A:Getting to the end of the tournament and congratulating the winner

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A: Making tournaments too complicated. The tournament organizer may understand but half the players in it probably haven’t got a clue what's happening

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: Making tournaments too complicated lol

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A: Hmmm, I think organizers should be allowed to play in their tournaments. Its only a fun site , so lets not take things too seriously

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A:I wait until they need an update. I check every day though

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A:No and that’s a big NO

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A:I prefer to use a reserve if one can be found!

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A:The scoreboard.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A:No idea

Q: If you are thinking purely on balance of tournament games is there anything you would want changing?

A:I'd like to see more Offical CC sanctioned tournaments

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A:

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A:

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A:Too much and I'm thinking of really limiting the time I devote to it!

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A: The Untouchables

Q:Who are you?

A:Not sure I understand the question!

Q: Why did you pick the name hulmey?

A:Its been my nickname since I was a boy

Q:Where are you from?

A: I'm English, but have traveled the world with my father who was in the military, so I haven’t really got a home!

Q:Favourite play colour?

A:Red

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A:Waterloo and Classic

Q:Favourite settings?

A:Don’t have one

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A:Sequential

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: None at present

Q: Any parting shots?

A: Well done for all the good work you guys are doing in creating the newsletter

Q: Thank you for your time.

A:Thank you for your questions
