Map Name: Nigeria
Mapmaker(s): Gillipig
Number of Territories: 59
Special Features: One way assaults
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: It's a map of Nigeria

Bonuses:
The map currently has eleven bonus areas and 59 regions.

The village bonus system works as following:
you get 1 troop for 3 villages. Then another troop for every 2 regions, if you hold all 9 villages you get 5 troops.

Impasssables and other:
There are no high mountains in Nigeria but plenty of rivers, so rivers are better impassables here I think. I've added forests and bridges.
Tribes one way assaults their same bonus village.

For most of this I've pretty much just followed Natty's gimp tutorial.
All input is of course welcome. Advice, tips and tricks though would be awesome!!

looks like a good start, what are your regions based on? I made a lame Nigeria map a long long time ago, I based the regions on the linguistic groups in Nigeria and did the provinces off of the political provinces in Nigeria. Feel free to take anything you need from my map. Nigeria would be a cool place to have on CC

Thanks :). It's the worlds seventh most populous country so it should have a map of it's own! If we have Luxembourg....;)
Your map doesn't look lame at all! Why did you quit on it?
Funny that you said you based your bonuses on linguistic groups because I planned to do that myself. But I thought some groups covered too small of an area and other covered too large of an area to make it balanced. I based my map on this image: http://www.bjchinesetranslation.com/map ... igeria.jpg
I've bundled together nearby states into different bonus regions because if I were to keep all states separate, I'd get a very cluttered map with 36 different bonus zones. All borders are actual state borders though.
I'm probably going to name a lot of territs after existing states and name bonuses after where they are on the map. Southeast, east, northwest, central etc.

Good going Gillipig. Let's see where you take this. Good luck.
I'd started thinking about a map forZaire (for the Zs in the game list) but then discovered they changed the country's name :roll:

Thanks :). There are so many interesting African countries just waiting to be portrayed :).

Thanks Cairns :).
Yeah Democratic Republic of the Congo just doesn't sound as appealing! But you still have Zambia and Zimbabwe ;)!

I added territory borders and named the bonuses. The map now has 59 territs.

Bonus Values:
Southwest = 4 troops
South = 5 troops
East = 5 troops
Central = 5 troops
West = 6 troops
Northwest = 5 troops
North = 4 troops
Northcentral = 6 troops
Northeast = 5 troops

I've decided where to put the bridges and where to have forests but won't get to that yet.
Next on the list is to name the territs. I know what to name almost all of them so I just need to get to it I guess :).

Named all current regions after closest large city. I changed the title style a bit and I added some textures to the water as well. Next on the list for me is to try my hand at forests and bridges. I'm anxious because I've never tried that before 8-[.

I made very simple trees and bridges, lots of room for improvement but they're good enough for now I hope. I also changed three bonus colours. Let me know if you liked the old colours better. I'm trying to make it resemble Nigeria's national colours.

Next up is to draw the rail roads. We'll see how it looks, hopefully I can make it look decent. If I scratch the railroad idea I might have to find another source for bonuses. In Nigeria 50% of the population is Christian, and 50% is Muslim. Which is quite rare and interesting. I could place Churches and Mosques on different places on the map and give bonuses for holding x amount of territs with Mosques and the same for Churches!?
If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them!
This is fun :)!

Can you add a legend on the map with all the bonus values and special rules (if any)? That way you'll have a working draft and can be moved to the drafting room.

I studied Nigeria as part of an Aids in Africa project. I recall it being very tribal even today. I think a map of Nigeria should not only acknowledge their tribal mentalities/factions but probably focus on them.

Add a legend, you'll have more visibility, and obviously more comments, in the drafting room. ;)

Greate start Gillipig, I like the colour set in V2, its very african with earthcolours.

About the gameplay I dont know if its a good idea bringing religions in to it, what about tribes insted ? thats more african than white man religion ;)

Religion isn't really such a good subject for a map imo... too many opinions, too many people get offended, etc. I'd also suggest using tribes rather than religions.

On another note, you have a lot of unused space on the map... I would suggest cropping the image, and a bit of rearrangement... here's a quick mock-up:

Yes a legend will be on the next update. I'm scratching religion because it seems most don't want it on the map.
Apparently there are 371 tribes in Nigeria :shock: http://nairasource.com/index.php?topic=52.0 which leaves me slightly paralyzed when trying to come up with a fitting gameplay. But I suppose I could choose the largest ones in different parts of the country, and give a bonus for holding x amount of tribes. How does that sound?
I tried making railroads today but I had problems with it. The hard part was to make them curve. What tools do you guys use when you make railroads? And does everyone think the colour scheme is better in version 3 than version 4? I kinda like version 4 more because it resembles the Nigerian flag.
I like the crop with the exception of where the title is. I think I'll be able to keep the title in the top without going over 800px and without removing too much space where the legend will be. I might have to make the title a little smaller though.

What I did:
1) I cropped the image to fit the largest size allowed without going supersize.
2) I changed the bonus colour scheme back to version 3's.
3) I added a tribe bonus system and I made some tribe symbols. They're supposed to look like an African tribe masks on a triangular shield. I know it looks nothing like it but it was my first try.
4) I made a mini map.
5) I made the rest of what i think needs to be explained in the legend at this point which is impassables.

Is this enough to get me moved to the drafting room?

I'd like to get some feedback on my bonuses. Are they too large? too many borders? Should I split them into smaller bonuses and/or rearrange the territory borders? What do you think about the tribe bonus?
What I'm doing next depends very much what you guys think I should work on.

Ok the cropping is ok but the title looks really awkward at the top, like it doesn't fit there properly, and the balance of the image is a bit skewed...

And yeah, this should be moved to the drafting room.

I noticed that while I made it too. I think I have two alternatives. Either move the title to the water like you did or make more room upstairs meaning I'd have to get ride of some space where the legend and minim map are. I do have a lot of space down there at the moment but if a lot more things are going into the legend then I might not have much space.

Great! Now I'm just waiting for some feedback on what I need to work on.

Move the title and crop the image a bit more on the right side, there's some needless empty space on the right side that makes the playable area not be on the center of the image.

what I would had sayd ;)

What about, instead of the tribe bonus, (wich is not bad) let tribes atack each other, like tribes some times do :P then the tribe bonus you did, change it to "villages"

this way you got 1 more gameplay isue to the map and can put in some cool theme stuff, eg. village huts :mrgreen:

still cool colour set ;)

PS. cool jungle names for the tribes ?

What I did:
    Cropped the image to get rid of some wasted space and make the map being the center of the attention again.
    Moved the title, changed the colour and gave it a different texture.
    Changed two of the bonus colours and modified the mini map.
    Added villages to the gameplay and altered the role of tribes.
    Added a win condition.
    I unintentionally changed the intensity of the colours when I went from working on my pc at home to my mac on the train.
    Let me know what you think of that. I kinda like the increased intensity!

Don't really know what to do for the next update so feeedback please :).

I still like the colour set, stick whit that :)
The gameplay works greate for me ;)

The icons, trees, tribes and hut need some serius work, I suggest you dont add any trees but maby just green vegetation or rivers. trees looks wierd lying down on the side. The tribe icon, hard for me to tell what its imagen, only becourse i know what it represents I can tell. Same with the villages, would look better if it was a single hut, made of clay/cowdirt and straws ;)

You got a solid map and definitely worth taking all the way.

Flap.
