not to mention with the use of folders you can easily have back-ups. then if something goes wrong just duplicate the layers in a previous back up.
as for the colo
ur overlays their main advantage is the ease of switching colo
urs around in case the public doesn't like them.
one disadvantage of colour overlays is that if you copy paste a layer style around you'll have to manually readjust the colours in each overlay. if you're not a blending options abuser you can get away easy with-out pasting the layer style but if you are you'll see this is a big problem unless you note down the colour codes.
so what i do is make special overlay layers. so i have the main layer with effects and all then on top of that the overlay layer (which can be done with clipping masks or by simply creating a new layer with the same shape ctrl+click and setting it to overlay or what ever suits you). the advantage is that you can leave the overlays alone and then simply copy paste the effects in the main layer onto other layers
