LA ARMADA INVENCIBLE 1588

Image

ENGLISH:

The Spanish Armada (Spanish: Grande y Felicísima Armada, "Great and Most Fortunate Navy") was the Spanish fleet that sailed against England under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia in 1588, with the intention of overthrowing Elizabeth I of England to stop English involvement in the Spanish Netherlands and English privateering in the Atlantic and the Pacific.

JAMAICA 1655

ENGLISH:

Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing there in 1494 and his probable landing point was Dry Harbour, now called Discovery Bay. There is some debate as to whether he landed in St. Ann's Bay or in Discovery Bay. St. Ann's Bay was the "Saint Gloria" of Columbus who first sighted Jamaica at this point. One mile west of St. Ann's Bay is the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, Sevilla, which was established in 1509 and abandoned around 1524 because it was deemed unhealthy. The capital was moved to Spanish Town, then called "St. Jago de la Vega", around 1534 and is located in present day St. Catherine.

When the English captured Jamaica in 1655 the Spanish colonists fled after freeing their slaves. The slaves fled into the mountains, joining those who had previously escaped from the Spanish to live with the Taínos.

ENGLISH:

Blas de Lezo defending Cartagena from Vernon, he only had six ships and 2,830 men, including soldiers, free slaves and civil population. Vernon had 186 ships and 25,000 men when -from the sea and land- surrounded the city. An army only in second place after Normandy during World War II. Facing all these difficulties, it was a victory for Blas de Lezo, who had missed an eye, an arm and a leg in previous battles.
The defeat of the British invasion force assured the preservation of the Spanish Empire in the Americas.

His memory is honored by the Spanish Navy, where his name is remembered with the greatest honor that can surrender to a Spanish sailor, being usual there is always a Navy ship named after him. The latter is a class frigate Alvaro de Bazan, the Blas de Lezo (F103).

ENGLISH:
The disparity in losses has been attributed by some historians less to Nelson's daring tactics than to the difference in fighting readiness of the two fleets.[34] Nelson's fleet was made up of ships of the line which had spent considerable amount of sea time during months of blockades of French ports, whilst the French fleet had generally been at anchor in port. However, Villeneuve's fleet had just spent months at sea crossing the Atlantic twice, which supports the proposition that the main difference between the two fleets' combat effectiveness was the morale of the leaders. The daring tactics employed by Nelson were to ensure a strategically decisive result. The results vindicated his naval judgement
