Top of the Charts (2011) (dustin800 WINS!!)

Original thread: viewtopic.php?t=151567

Welcome to Top of the Charts!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary of Game Load and Charting

In each round you will play 2 sets of 5 games each for every single you have in the chart. So if you reach the Top 10 in Round 1, you can expect 2 sets of 10 games in Round 2 as you'll have two singles out.

Charting is based on number of wins, with tie-breaks settled by CC Score in Round 1, and in future rounds by how well the single charted in the previous round.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This tournament has a musical theme and will consist entirely of 1v1 games on Random Map.

Premium only please (5 games at a time) with 97% attendance or higher.

All games will be:

1v1, Random Map
Automatic
Sequential
Escalating
Chained
Sunny

The Scenario

The plan between you and your record company is to release up to 5 singles over the year, as long as they do well!

Format

EDIT: Please see red text for edits to the format to make tiebreaks less common.

For each single you have in each round you will play 2 batches of 5 games against random opponents. You will score points for winning games, and bonus points for getting a high chart position at the end of the round. Everyone will start with 1 single, therefore 2x5 games per round.

There will be 12 rounds, one to represent each month of the year.

Outcome of Results

November:
If a single fails to make the Top 5, your record label decide that they like you as an artist, but feel it was the wrong single, so it will be withdrawn from the shelves and your next single will be released instead (if you have another single to release).

If your only current single fails to make the Top 5, your brutal record label drops you and you’re out of the tournament!

The end of December will be the end of the tournament.

Tie-Breaks

In Round 1 (January), any ties will be settled by CC Score (see next post). After that, ties will be settled by who performed the best in previous rounds (most recent first). If a song was not out in the previous month, the average number of sales earned per single by that artist in the previous month will be used. Any meaningful ties still remaining will be broken via 1v1 round robin between the tied players.

Summary

Each round escalates, so more sales (points) are on offer as we go through the tournament. Bonuses for charting well will also increase through the tournament.

Winning and the End of the Tournament

The winner of the tournament will be the player who has sold the most singles over the course of the year.

Signing Up

Here’s your chance to be creative! Please sign up with your band/artist name (this will be your username if you can’t think of anything!) and the titles of 5 singles.

Boring Stuff

All games must be joined within 3 invitations. If you are going to be away, please let me know so I can try and work around it, but I can't guarantee I will be able to and the tournament may move on.
Reserves will be welcome until the end of Round 3 (March). After that the number of players in the tournament will simply decrease.
I reserve the right to disqualify anyone from the tournament for foul play or unsportsmanlike behaviour.
If you can't think of names for your singles I'll give you a song title by the Spice Girls or an equally embarrassing artist.

Statistics and such can be found here:

How well each song sold in each month: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... li=1#gid=0
(Each artist is on a different sheet)

I will no longer be keeping track of how well each song does during a given month - it has become a pain, and an unnecessary one at that.
Results will be tallied at the end of each month.

In the 2 set of games that Tupence created for May, one artist played for more singles then he was supposed to have out (by my calculations), and two artists didn't play at all - with Tupence playing for only one of the two.

Therefore, once we fill the two remaining open spots, we will start playing from the beginning of May.

musicalmaven has replaced topper, who I still have not heard from.

First games of the second half of May have now been sent out.
I apologize for the delay, but as some of you may know, I am currently running 6 tournaments at once, and one of them in particular has been giving me a bit of a headache for the past week or so, so everything else kind of took a backseat.

My apologies, again, and I will do my best to ensure that this kind of thing does not happen again.

Unfortunately, it has happened - two lucky players have drawn Hive.
For those of you who have already finished your games, my apologies.
Please be patient - it may be a while before the next games are made.

Indeed it is! The last May game has just finished, so I will be tallying the scores, reporting the results, and starting June as soon as I find the time.

At the end of May, we say good bye to 4 artists:

Foreverman
musicalmaven
notyou2
sempaispellcheck

If my counting is correct, 39 songs from 21 artists will be on the shelves in June.
Overall scoreboard will be updated soon, and the first round of June games will be released tomorrow (hopefully).
NOTE: I will be changing the format of game labels to make it easier for all to determine which games are for which song.

Each artist only has 5 singles to release over the course of the tourney. You have already released all of yours.

Yeah, but since there are less people playing now other singles arent getting knocked out so basically if you did well early you get punished. I had a decent lead and have no chance to win since the current leader has 4 singles and there aren't enough people playing now to eliminate any of his while I can't get anymore.

Now that we're down below 40 songs, I'll change the outcomes to make it fairer.

Starting in June, if a song is ranked:
1-10: Song stays in charts, artist releases new song
11-20: Song stays in charts, artist does not release new song
21-30: Song removed from charts, artist releases new song
31-40: Song removed from charts, artist does not release new song

Also, since bonuses increase from month to month, but remain proportional to each other, there is a much larger difference in sales between the first two songs in January and the first two songs in June. It's never too late to close the gap.
