And not really federal prisons either (better designed and higher guard-to-prisoner ratio), or minimum security state prisons (mostly non-violent offenders), or maximum security state prisons (too little prisoner interaction). Mostly just medium security state prisons; violent offenders with low guard-to-prisoner numbers and lots of opportunities for intra-prisoner interaction.

Though I imagine the numbers aren't that much higher than the average British boarding school.
