This is not knocking you, rdsrds, or the song, which I think is beautiful, but it always kind of bugs me that people like the one who made this video think this is some kind of hymn or worship song. They obviously never paid attention to the lyrics, other than the title. It's a sad song about a guy who has been through multiple hurtful relationships, and the title/chorus and other Biblical references are meant to be ironic. Once again, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's evil or anything; a lot of beautiful music is about sad relationships. It's just not what a lot of people seem to think it is.

That said, here's my favorite version. I think you'll like it too:

I kind of think of it as a call to a God that might not exist from the depths of despair.

Yeah, I would say that's one of the undertones of the irony. I think what I said would still apply, though. Btw, what are you doing up so late?

Wondering what to do with an essay I have to edit. It's early here though.

OK, this is going to be unusual in 2 ways. First, it's not the song itself that was covered (actually, it is, since they tell me that the song is an old one from the 30's, but that's not what this post is about) but what goes along with the song that is "covered" or borrowed.

Second, I'm going to post the cover first, since people are familiar with it, then post the original after. According to "Teens react to..." 's research, this is the first known use of the thing, and the person in the video invented it.

The "cup song" from "Pitch Perfect"

And here's the original: Screen Door" Rich Mullins.

I don't know who does the original (I think it's like really, really old) but Van Morrison's live version of St. James Infirmary Blues is fantastic. Check out the Satchmo and Cab versions, too.

St.James Infirmary Blues is an old classic

Bonnie Raitt has some excellent covers on her recent album,
Slipstream: Gerry Rafferty's, Right Down The Line
and Bob Dylan's, Million Miles are just a few.

I think Louis Armstrong probably popularized this old folk song. There are two other version I am familiar with as well, an old version by Leadbelly:

And amazingly, Hugh Laurie's "Let Them Talk" album is pretty decent, and has a fine rendition of it:
