Shall we build an alternative Christmas 2011 playlist?

Putting together a playlist for a Christmas party. Carols are easy, as are the classics from the crooners. Anything interesting, different, and preferably modern would be good as a suggestion. As always, I guess, go with your heart. Should be at least vaguelly Christmassy though.

Name that Christmas tune...

Police nabbed my dad.
The police nabbed my dad.
Police busted dad, drunk in public
Wasted on eggnog.

Police nabbed my dad.
The police nabbed my dad.
Police busted dad, drunk in public
Trashed on eggnog.

Can’t make the bail now he’s missing X-mas
No Christmas gifts cause he’s off the good list.
No Christmas cheer in the jail where he sits
And it’s breaking mommy’s heart.

I pick up a few miles per hour when that comes on while skiing...

That being said, Van Halen pretty much has the same effect.

Maaaan, you are the laziest party organiser ever! You probably ought to put Conquer Club banners up all round your house during dinner, seeing's how you've asked CC to pick everything down to the cologne you wear.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Catholic School Girls Rule (mentions Christianity)
Bloodhound Gang - The Inevitable Return of the Great White Dope (Jesus will return to Earth)
Run Tings - Fires Burning (Mickey Finn Remix) (nothing is more festive than a nice fire)
Top Buzz - Living In Darkness (there was no electricity in Bethlehem)
B-Complex - Beautiful Lies (the Bible is lies)
2 Bad Mice - Bombscare (a common occurence in modern-day Israel)

Barenaked Ladies and Sara McLaghlan

Not sure if this is the "alternative" you meant. This is one of my favorites. My ultimate favorite is still Blue Christmas by Elvis.

The Twelve Days of Christmas by Bob and Doug Mackenzie has always been my favourite.

I've taught pretty much everybody I know to sing the Bob and Doug lyrics instead of the original..:)

These 2 are to be listened to together. They are the first 2 of 5 parts of "The Jerusalem Suite" but I couldn't find a version that goes right from one into the other as they do on the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVsHkwdG1fk

I gather that you weren't looking for classic carols, but this version of O Holy Night" is so sublimely beautiful that I had to include it: it's among my favorite songs , not just Christmas songs. Singing harmonies starting on verse 2 is my favorite vocalist, Matthew Ward. http://www.myspace.com/twilaparis/music ... t-34459035

Back to non-traditional Christmas songs, this one is from my favorite songwriter, the late Rich Mullins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyGhlN_iaxQ
or if you prefer a punkier version (actually it's "ska" style): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0Vd7pQelzM
