Avoiding Bigotry Doesn't Mean There Aren't Any Villains

Postby pimpdave on Mon Apr 30, 2012 10:07 am

Real equality would mean the ability to have fully fleshed out people, just like there are all over the world. Not every homosexual is a hero, just like not every white person is a villain.

Elie Wiesel actually wrote an article that appeared in The New Yorker about this back in the fifties, about how people shouldn't just acknowledge his right to exist, but also the right for his people to have villains.

What do you guys think?

Maybe you guys need an example. What do you think of the movie True Lies? One of the good guys was an Arab, but people still flipped out and claimed the movie was racist because it happened to have Arab terrorists as bad guys.

Would you guys think it's anti-semitic if there was a movie with a greedy Jewish banker? What about if there was a sadistic homosexual (like Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs), is that gay bashing? Is it racist against white people that the corrupt, murdering warden of The Shawshank Redemption was white?

Although your comments on Shawshank were clearly in jest considering the hero is also white, I would expand on that point and highlight that the gay prisoners were also villains in Shawshank Redemption. It doesn't make it a homophobic film by any stretch. It is all about context. For instance John Wayne's pro-war piece Green Berets, there is obvious and blatent racism towards the Vietnamese. The same can be said about D.W Griffith's Birth of A Nation and black people.

People argue that a lot of Stephen King books are racist because of his use of the 'magical negro.' The Shining is one of the most obvious examples. I tend to think this is once again people being over-dramatic and hunting something to complain about especially in more modern movies.

Hmm, I'm guessing you haven't actually seen The Silence of the Lambs. Don't be a critic if you don't have the credentials PD.

Just before the Oscars, a group of gay activists crashed into the New York Film Critics Circle Awards to protest The Silence of the Lambs. They claimed it made drag queens and crossdressers look bad; that the movie implied that men who dress up as women must be sick and deranged. The matter was handled peacefully, though – no arrests were made.

Meh, maybe making a woman suit is a gay thing for PD. I've no idea, but there's nothing in the movie that says he's gay.

Dave said some gays think Buffalo Bill is gay. The two images that look like stag bettle larvae in his post, surrounding a phrase, are called quotation marks and are used to denote speech, or a quotation, in some Indo-European languages. According to Wikipedia:

Single or double quotation marks denote either speech or a quotation. Double quotes are preferred in the United States, and also tend to be preferred in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Single quotes are more usual in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Hmm. Nope, he said Buffalo Bill is gay.

To be fair Saxi, I thought it was a weird statement too.

Cool. "Sadistic" being the drawing word - and "Buffalo Bill" being separated by parentheses - I took it to mean Dave was asking if there was a sadist like Buffalo Bill so assumed your prancing about was in reaction to his later quote.

I guess I understand, though, how one might reach a different conclusion as to Dave's intent if one's worldview equates sadism with homosexuality.
No?

Maybe because in the novel (as well as the movie), Jame Gumb (AKA Buffalo Bill) murdered Benjamin Raspail (you know, the guy who's head was found in the storage unit?) after Raspail left Gumb. The two were lovers.

Now, you might not consider Gumb homosexual, maybe you'd be right, but he certainly preferred men as sexual partners over women. It never went into it in the book, but I'd be hard pressed to even think Gumb had ever had sexual relations with anyone of the opposite sex. He certainly didn't rape any of the women he kidnapped and later murdered. He just wanted their skin, so he could be a woman.

Buffalo Bill was sexually attracted to men.
