[US-Americans] Indicate Your Level of Electoral Involvement

Postby saxitoxin on Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:25 pm

During the year 2012, how involved have you been in the election(s)? You can use any election in year 2012 you want, not just the November 6 general election, but also any primary or special elections in your locality, or elections for offices lower than President (e.g. City Council), or higher than President (e.g. Sewage Commissioner), or referendums, etc.

I've toyed with the idea of running for a local position from time to time. Ultimately though, it came down to the fact that I'm just too lazy for all that electioneering shit.

I will vote this election, as per usual.

I've donated money to campaigns, as per usual.

I've volunteered time to campaigns, as per usual.

Weirdly, I've not ever put a sign on my lawn.

Where's the option of "Flipping off any and all political ads that I've come across because they depict either Romney or Obama"?
Now is not the time to divide ourselves, to relish in letters by men long dead. Now is the time to come and work together in order to bring this country onto the right track. We are all citizens of this country, it is time to treat eachother as equals.

Already voted. If ya don't vote, you have no right to bitch about politics/government. Also, I go to some of the forums/rallies for local/regional/state candidates.

Yes, I am voting. Those signs are annoying. If you vote for a candidate because you saw a sign in someone's lawn you are way too impressionable. :P
Funny true story:
One day I saw someone at the end of my road plant a few of these signs on the shoulder of the road. There was another car that came up not 30 seconds later, ran over and flattened all of the previous person's signs and planted their own opposing candidates signs. Funny stuff.

I've never put up any signs in my yard or windows. I've accidentally walked through a few campaign protests while downtown. Some group tried to stop me and have me join in and kindly told them my bananas needed ripening and stepped aside.

-Four people have donated money. To what campaigns have you donated money?
I'm one of the four so I'll start ... I gave a few bucks to the incumbent Sheriff and also to a candidate for state Attorney-General.

-Two people have run for office. For what office did you run?

-One person was interviewed by the media. What media interviewed you? (i.e. Houston Chronicle, Hustler, etc.)

Make it 3 and damn you Saxi, you rigged the question.

Technically speaking I "ran" for Republican Town Committee Person. There was no opponent, and no election really, but my name was on one of the many petitions I had to walk around to get signatures on from Registered Republicans in order to get the real people on the Ballot. Yes, I suppose it's fun at the convention when I have a bucket load of votes I can use for a local candidate. But it almost never gets to that point and everyone counts their votes ahead of time and the non winners drop out. So it's all work, no play, and I'm treated like a plant in the mushroom factory.

I'd rather have an office where it comes to a real vote, and I get to do a debate.

A few weeks ago I mooched free barbecue off of a political picnic before voting for the first time, does that count as a political event?

I voted for quite a few parties, but I did vote for him (the host of the picnic) too, I was already planning to beforehand though.

Just kidding :P
I honestly did like the personal touch, he had gone door to door meeting the people of the district earlier. At the picnic he talked with people, shook my hand, asked about my academics, and even told my grandfather I must be a joy to be around, I really did have a much more positive view of him afterwards.
The food was good too.

It's actually refreshing to hear someone admit to being human in regard to their voting habits. You met the guy in person, he seemed decent and this strengthened your opinion of him. I think that sometimes we may get so hung up on issues that we ignore the obvious and vote for someone who "fits the bill" in spite of our instincts. You happened to have the benefit of not having to choose between the two. :)

So, FunkyT, do you find personal marketing superior to mass marketing (campaign ads, televised debates, etc.)?

I don't plan on voting and that's what I answered in the poll. And to say that I don't have the "right to bitch about politics/gov't" is simply absurd. I will not be a party to the mass corruption, continued perpetuation of American imperialism and military complex, or violations of our rights and the rights of others across the globe. It's a moral stand, and I won't cooperate willingly with any entity that lays claim to me or the fruits of my labor. The difference between the U.S. gov't and the mafia is nominal.

Plus, even if I was so inclined to bother with voting, it's not worth my time to register and vote and all that jazz, especially when confronted with choosing between the lesser of two evils. The fact that I'm forced with such a choice is reason enough not to vote.

As an aside, what do you really gain from being one tiny little drop of water in the bucket, even if your side wins? A warm, fuzzy feeling for contributing pretty much nothing?

Sure, I agree with you on that.

Why aren't you voting third-party then?

You're not forced with such a choice. Alternatives are available in all 50 states.
