hm... might snag that one actually, i'm looking for something in that range as well, but i'm thinking i'll go with windows 8, try to get a newer video card, and downgrade the ram and hdd, cuz you can upgrade those for cheap. and I'd prefer the 3rd gen i5 processor

The thing is I couldn't find another similar afterwards.

They have a list of the refurbished laps they have a the moment, you have to check it every day looking for bargains, and I got tired of it.

PC laptop manufacturers are stupid, it's hard to find a high-res screen.
Most of them don't include SSD's. Don't let it limit your selection, you can always upgrade to one later. And you should. SSD's seem to double/triple how fast your computer feels.
8gb ram is easy
ivy bridge is easy
some laptops have add-on video cards for playing games. If you don't play games, the intel HD 4000 is probably fine.

exactly bedub1. I was reading somewhere that it isn't even that expensive to make the high resolution displays, it was a thing of the marketing. That they were expensive because they thought people didn't like those resolutions and they did less of them.

Since I tried my first SSD I knew I loved it, they are fast, quiet, and don't heat up at all. I hate feeling the heat in my wrists.

I want a nice video card for the 3d effects of linux.

I'm not very knowledgeable about video cards, but the one I have in this machine is a nVidia Quadro 160m, running with propietary nvidia drivers on linux and it isn't great, I want better. I believe the Intel HD 4000 is a bit below the Quadro 160m.

I think something like the GT 650m would do.

I think something like the GT 650m would do.

The quadro 160m is 8 steps above the HD 4000. Get a 680M. The chart lists the mobile graphics chips too, so you can compare them. Higher on the chart is better.

I could lose the regular hard drive and have only a Crucial 128gb SATA III, that would cost me 65 dls less.. but I think the mSATA Crucial is better.

I have a degree on Software Engineering, but do not work as one. I worked only 1 year on the field, as I was disappointed at the level of responsibilities compared to the pay. People doing easier jobs were doing the same or more money than I.

Computer hardware improves drastically every 6 months, it's impossible to keep up unless you are in the field, and even if you are in the field but you are not buying or working with the latest every day you need to read quite a bit before deciding.

I could do without asking here, there's a lot of reviews on technologies and complete systems on the web, and even on where to find the best prices, but I enjoy the talk here. It's like women talking about those shoes they want to buy.
