Why is Whaling Illegal?

Postby CreepersWiener on Sun Dec 23, 2012 3:33 pm

Why? Any particular reason? I would think if we ocean farmed whales we could feed a lot more people in the world than raising cattle. Cattle produce so much methane that they are screwing the Ozone Layer! When whales shit and fart, it just goes "Blub, Blub, Blub, Blub...and then the ocean cleans it up and little fishies eat all the whale poop!

We could also produce lots of oil from whale blubber! Diesel prices could be brought down and it would be a totally new renewable energy resource!

Because the fucking hippies (who are responsible for all the problems in the world) think whales have feelings and should be treated like humans.

Its not so much thinking they have feelings, its kind of more a scientific fact. As far as treating them like humans, well, certainly if they drive they should get a drivers license, but for the most part, I think you are confusing people treating them like one of God's creatures, not people.

Because the whales bite off whalers' legs which in turn leads the whalers to develop lifelong obsessions driven by revenge and madness.

One of the most peaceful places on the planet allows the killing of whales. I assume there are no hippies living there (only the ones that show up for the overly blown television series Whale Wars).

And sometimes they don't show up...but spend their time vacationing in Australia using donor money!

The Faroe Islands had their first murder in 23 YEARS! http://www.d-intl.com/articles/internat ... oe-islands The United States yet disallows Whale Hunting, but yet has an abominable murder rate! Is there a link between the banning of Whale Hunting and violent crimes?

I say let's eat whale steaks and quit killing each other!

Whales are meat, if you are against killing whales then you should also be against killing cows and chickens!

Whales are (well at least the ones that are consumed for meat) for the most part endangered. Not having natural enemies they don't exactly breed like rabbits.

"Tests have revealed that in whale meat sold in the Faroe Islands and Japan, high levels of mercury and other toxins are present. A research study was conducted by Tetsuya Endo, Koichi Haraguchi and Masakatsu Sakata at the University of Hokkaido found high levels of mercury in the organs of whales, particularly the liver. They stated that "Acute intoxication could result from a single ingestion" of liver. The study found that liver samples for sale in Japan contained, on average, 370 micrograms of mercury per gram of meat, 900 times the government's limit. Levels detected in kidneys and lungs were approximately 100 times higher than the limit."

LOL

Seriously, a cow can have a new calf about once a year, without any artificial enhancements. A whale, to contrast, can only calve every 2-3 years. It takes too long for a whale to get big, reproduce.

MY BAD.. corrected here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=183046&p=4006544#p4006544

Then you have the food argument itself---Cows eat grass, the "chaff" or parts that are inedible to human beings, like goats and sheep (but pigs, to contrast eat "human-viable" food). Whales eat either other fish or plankton. The amount of ocean necessary to support more than occasional whaling is huge. In short, many of the most classic arguments about why folks should be vegetarien are actually wrong when it comes to ruminents, but true when it comes to whales. The slight exceptions are in the high arctic. But, the amount of whaling historically done there was minimal. It takes a LOT of effort to get just one whale in the indigenous manner. Further, the human populations in those areas (Greenland, Alaska, Russian, etc.) was never all that high.

For both of those reasons, the number of whales humans could ever take sustainably is minimal.

Per farming... we can barely keep a few whales alive in highly intensive entertainment units like Sea world. We are no where near to being able to farm them in a productive way.

On top of all this, you have the intelligence debate, plus a few lesser debates having to do with them being capstone predators.

but carry on... just had to insert a little truth into what is obviously a spurious, jovially sarcastic thread.

A cow has a gestation period of about nine months or sometimes even a little longer. Therefore, they cannot possibly have a calf every three to four months.
