Best film director

Postby Haggis_McMutton on Wed Feb 20, 2013 6:29 am

Now taking nominations. Feel free to specify which movies you particularly liked.

Here's mine: Kubrick

Which movies? Pretty much all of them. Strangelove, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Shinning, Eyes Wide Shut, Lolita, Paths of glory, Barry Lindon.
I mean seriously, what the hell can you say about the guy.
Highest score: 3063; Highest position: 67;
Winner of {World War II tournament, -team 2010 Skilled Diversity, [FuN||Chewy]-[XII] USA};

That was my immediate thought when I read the thread title.

Perhaps 'best' in the sense that he makes lotsa money. Not even including his influence as a producer.

I don't know that I could give just one. I will say that I think the best directors currently working are the Coen Brothers.

Ditto. I consistently watch and come back to Coen Bros more than just about anybody and am always amused and entertained.

I also like Aronofsky a lot.

Hmm, I don't know about 'best', but Darren Aronofsky has always held a fond spot in my cinematic experience.

edit: apparently I didn't read Gunner's post. Wha-oops.

I've always liked the majority of Akira Kurosawa's films.

I will go old school with John Ford.
For drama I always like watching How Green Was My valley, Grapes of Wrath and Sergeant Rutledge.
For comedy Donavon's Reef, Mister Roberts.
For westerns The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Stagecoach and the Searchers to name a few.

Same here. Weird as all hell, but really good nonetheless.

I'm not a connoisseur but I have several that I like:

Woody Allen
Gus Van Sant
Scorsese
Kubrik
Tarantino
the Coen brothers
Coppola

in no particular order, and I'm surely forgetting someone.

Also, Scotty must be dying to reply Christopher Nolan.

It's tough since there are a lot of directors that people either love or hate, like Tarantino or Wes Anderson. I like both of those and Kubrick as well.

Kubrick's films are too good. I'm picking him over Tarantino just because his are older and have survived longer so far.

Kubrik is the best... But it's already been said.

I like Eastwood too.

Has to be the Coens for me.

Fincher, Nolan and Scorsese deserve honourable mentions though.

Old: King Vidor or John Ford
Current: Harmony Korine, hands down. Trash Humpers is the best movie ever made.

I'm going to be the rogue here and say that directors don't affect my enjoyment of a film. I would put writing number one and production number two.

I guess we can never tell whether one director is better than another. We can't say if Kubrick had directed Pulp Fiction that it would be better.

Caveat - I know next to nothing about the film industry. I either like movies or I don't and that tends to coincide with whether I think those films are well-written and have good special effects and general production.

I know nothing about the film industry but I wonder which single person has the most creative power when making a film. I'd think writer too but Tarantino hates (or, hated) Natural Born Killers because of how different it was from the script he wrote.

My response to that would be that the director then became the writer if he/she changed the script. I thought NBK was okay.
