Who hates Tarantino? I've only encountered one person in my whole life, Ft.

I've met quite a few actually, they aren't fans of his kill everybody at the end of a movie style.

I don't hate him, but I'm not a fan.

Kubrik is the best... But it's already been said.

I like Eastwood too.

Has to be the Coens for me.

Fincher, Nolan and Scorsese deserve honourable mentions though.

Old: King Vidor or John Ford
Current: Harmony Korine, hands down. Trash Humpers is the best movie ever made.

I'm going to be the rogue here and say that directors don't affect my enjoyment of a film. I would put writing number one and production number two.

I guess we can never tell whether one director is better than another. We can't say if Kubrick had directed Pulp Fiction that it would be better.

Caveat - I know next to nothing about the film industry. I either like movies or I don't and that tends to coincide with whether I think those films are well-written and have good special effects and general production.

I know nothing about the film industry but I wonder which single person has the most creative power when making a film. I'd think writer too but Tarantino hates (or, hated) Natural Born Killers because of how different it was from the script he wrote.

My response to that would be that the director then became the writer if he/she changed the script. I thought NBK was okay.

It was too weird at times and by the time I got around to watching it (like 5 years ago) it was no longer shocking.

I wasn't shocked by NBK... I always thought it was a road movie...

For the record I don't hate Tarantino, I just don't regard him as one of the Greats as it were. His style is admirable but his dialogue blows and I tend to judge directors as wholes. His newer movies are crap though, sorry.
I think Kubrick is a classic choice and I agree he's up there. I've seen Lolita I don't know how many times and find it a delightfully layered watch. So few directors are able to produce such a polished product, not to mention a great psychoanalytical conversation piece. Kubrick manages to maintain an undercurrent throughout the very innocent scenery. Showing without showing requires genius and the best do this with the lightest touch.
Other directors who I feel are praise worthy for creating consistently brilliant works of film are:
Roman Polanski(My personal vote for BFD)
Francis-Ford Coppola
David Lynch

There are a few odd directors that I've noted in the past who have made some quite good movies but don't hold a candle to the bodies of work of the above four.

For me direction is all about balance, congruity and consistency. Make my quality movie heavy on the subtlety and light on the levity(just enough to keep it fresh). I prefer to walk away from a film with a new perspective, not a handful of catchy quotables.

I was gonna say I didn't think anyone had mentioned Lynch yet.
