Elements of Xinjiang's Uighur population are unhappy mainly about their religious freedom and what they see as the marginalization of their ethnic culture. The economic disparity between them and Xinjiang's Han Chinese population is also a minor bone of contention. There is no suggestion that they think the way to resolve this is for Xinjiang to become independent, much as the good folks of Tiananmen Square were not looking for Beijing to achieve independence.
