Xinjiang

Postby mrswdk on Fri Jun 20, 2014 3:56 am

I can't remember who it was but a while ago someone made some comment about Xinjiang being separatist. I forgot to say this at the time but I just wanted to point out that it isn't, and Xinjiang has no designs on breaking away from China.

Alright, that's all. As you were.

Right. That's why Western tourists who visit Xinjiang have to be guarded to make sure they don't try to contact any locals and contaminate them with Western ideas. The locals are so fiercely loyal, they beg the Army to come and protect them from contact with Westerners.

I guess it was you then

Elements of Xinjiang's Uighur population are unhappy mainly about their religious freedom and what they see as the marginalization of their ethnic culture. The economic disparity between them and Xinjiang's Han Chinese population is also a minor bone of contention. There is no suggestion that they think the way to resolve this is for Xinjiang to become independent, much as the good folks of Tiananmen Square were not looking for Beijing to achieve independence.

Contaminate the locals with Western ideals? It's not Animal Farm.

Actually, no, it wasn't me. I vaguely remember the discussion, but I no longer remember who said that or what the original thread was.

Nawww, if I was the king lama then I'd be too busy encouraging people to set themselves on fire to post on here.
