Ethics and morality...

Postby Neoteny on Thu Nov 15, 2007 12:02 am

Since I have observed such a diversity of moral/ethical/religious viewpoints in my short time here, I'm curious to see what everyone's favorite moral/ethical/religious texts/treatises are. I'll go first.

Mine changes as I read more and more but my current favorite is "Why I Am Not A Christian" by Bertrand Russell. A close second is Why I Am Not A Muslim by Ibn Warraq. Yes, I recognize the repetition. Anyone else?

as far as morals go, I have this to say:

A Friend of Mine Once wrote:Hugh, your morals are lacking a certain
something . . . like existence

I've heard The Tao of Pooh is quite excellent. Haven't had a chance to get ahold of it though.

Are there many things in this cool-hearted world so utterly exquisite

Dennett is great. I loved Breaking the Spell too - an attempt to treat religion scientifically. Tremendously interesting.

Of all the scientific philosophers I've read, I haven't read Dennett. I've been meaning to get ahold of one though. So, Breaking the Spell is my best bet?

David Hume is probably the one I like most. But I haven't read much on this subject.

i liked singer's book writings on an ethical life....though i didnt necessarily take on all of the things he said, but he seems pretty well respected among some of the ethicisits today.

For ethics:

"V for Vendetta" by Alan Moore

"You may abandon your own body but you must preserve your honour." from Myamoto Musashi's "Dokkodo"

"Never stray from the Way." from Myamoto Musashi's "Dokkodo"

For religion:

"Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help." from Myamoto Musashi's "Dokkodo"

For morality (meaning 'code of conduct'):

"Rules are limits. Substitute them with insight." mandalorian2298

It is. It's a pretty short read, but insightful. The Te of Piglet, so I've heard, is good as well.

Of the one's I listed I liked The Way of the Peaceful Warrior.

Zen in the Martial Arts is favorite among many of my friends, but I've heard Zen and the art of Motorcycle Repair (no I'm not joking)is better.

well, i read the god delusion, and while dawkins amkes a sound argument he is often insufferably arrogant, high=minded and smug. He should stick to writing pop science books about evolution, which he does v well. Denney really does try to approach the big questions as scientifically as possible, altho8gh he is openly atheistic. It;s not polemic or diatribe. I loved it.

My partner travels a lot for work. He has a stack of copies of Russell's "Why I Am Not a Christian" that he keeps in his suitcase. He inserts it in Gideons Bibles in every hotel room he stays at (or the Book of Mormon, if he's staying at a Marriot).

Anyway, my fav is "Nuestra America" by Jose Marti, probably. Or his "Mi raza". "A town sets a black man on fire" is also pretty great.

Marti makes me weep, weep, WEEP.

I thought God gave everyone a moral compass in his heart/soul.

I still believe that, dont really need a book to explain or give excusses....
