Just round it. 9 rounds up, causing the 9 in front to become 10, causing the 9 in front to again become 10, and so on until it rounds out to 1. Anyway, could I post some of my own? They're not math problems, but they're still riddles.

There is a town that wishes to expand their fountain to twice it's size, but there's a problem. The fountain is square, and arranged with a tree at each corner. The town doesn't want to pay to have the trees removed,so how can they double the fountain's size, while removing the least amount of trees?

sfhbballnut wrote:9.999999.....minus 9.0 isn't 9? did I miss something? that doesn't work

i explained it kinda confusingly (is that a word???)

ill try again:
x=0.999999....
first do 10x
10x= 9.9999999999999
then do 10x-x
10x-x=9x
9.9999999 (ten x part)-0.999999999 (x part) = 9.000000 (which is 9x)
since 9x=9, x=1
since x=0.9999999, 0.999999=1

here is the other solution. its easier to explain:

ok..
take 0.999999 and divide it by 3
0.9999999/3=0.3333333333333
convert 0.3333333333... into a fraction
0.3333333333333 = 1/3
now multiply that by 3. that equals one
1/3 X 3 =1
explanation is bolded. not bold = math

does the fountain with the doubled size still have to be square?

That's how it's set up, but there's a way to do it without moving any of the trees.
