June 24th TPA3 tourney [POLL]

I have volunteered to launch the last tournament of the TPA3 season, on June 24th. I still don't have have a clear idea of how I want to set it up, except that it will almost certainly be Terminator.

Based on the date, June 24th, I'm considering the following themes:
  1. June 24th, 1128. Battle of Sao Mamende paves the way for Portuguese independence. Map for this theme would be Portugal.
  2. June 24th, 1314. The Battle of Bannockburn re-establishes Scottish independence. Need I say that the map for this theme would be Scotland?
  3. June 24th, 1340. The Battle of Sluys, one of the bloodiest naval battles of the Middle Ages, gives the English control of the English Channel. Map would be Flanders 1302. Although not a naval map, it was the key area of strategic concern. (Until the Industrial Revolution, Flanders was the wealthiest region along the Channel.)
  4. June 24th, 1497. John Cabot lands at Newfoundland, the first European in Canada since the departure of the Vikings. Map would be Golfe du St. Laurent.
  5. June 24th, 1571. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi founds Manila, future capital of the Philippines. At the risk of being obvious, I proclaim Philippines as map consistent with the theme.
  6. June 24th, 1880. The first performance of O Canada, later adopted as the Canadian national anthem. Canada would be a good choice of map for this theme.
  7. June 24th, 2012. Lonesome George, the last known member of the Pinta subspecies of Galapagos Tortoise, dies, quite likely meaning that the subspecies is now extinct. Treasures of the Galapagos would be an interesting map to mate with this theme.

Please help me select a theme for this tournament. You may also post below about things you would like to see in this tournament (spoils? forts? possible GA suggestions?).

Wow - a mini Duke Tournament Series! Went with a map for a historical even I knew about - the others are not known, including Sluys which is surprising as it sounds as though we should have been taught something about that period in our history!

Well Duke, you know me (and this doesn't help much, I know), but anything that doesn't contain 1v1 and trench and I'm interested.

Hi, fog and trench would be nice, escalating I guess to help it finish quicker.

I thought you hated the French more than the English? You certainly were allied with the English a lot more often than at war with them.

It appears that many just voted because they liked Lonesome George (Like I almost did) instead of checking out all the maps. Galapagos map is not a favorite but I love the look of the Scotland map!

Since it's terminator, regardless of which map wins, I'd like to see it set up as 5 players, Auto, Seq, Fresh(No Spoils), and Unlimited forts. Trench is fine with me and although I prefer Sunny, I can live with fog.

FREE SCOTLAND!!!

Okay ... here in Quebec Canada ... June 24th is a special day indeed ... so what map do you suggest for Quebec ??? ... in general the 24th has been celebrated in Canada as the Queen's birthday ... but now most just like the excuse for a day off work and a holiday ...

Quebec on the other hand has dropped the relationship to the crown ... and consider it THEIR special Quebec day .. I think it is referred to as Dollard's Day ... but the independence movement grabs it full force and puts on the parties etc ...

Just to be clear.... I only want to do ONE of the above themes, not multiple themes in one tournament. I was prepared, if there was some kind of tie, so do some kind of hybrid theme. For instance, if there was a tie between the three Battles of Independence, I could have done an "Independence" theme combining all three. However, if one of the seven becomes a clear winner (and that does seem to be happening) then there will only be ONE map used and ONE theme.

As much as I love coming up with tournament themes, I just don't have time to do them all. Hence the vote.

(To answer your question at face value, if I was doing Quebec, I would probably do some kind of a hybrid using three or more maps -- Canada, Golfe de St. Laurent, and New World are obvious choices. Great Lakes is a possibility, and so is France 1789. But I'm not doing a Quebec theme, at least not this year, so this is just a curiosity. )

Lonesome George "More than just a symbol for the Galapagos!" has scored 26% of the vote and is the theme of the June 24th tournament.

You can sign up for it here: Subject: Symbol of the Galapagos [TPA3]
