This week we take a look at the dreaded TOURNAMENT DEADBEATS! Specifically, how some organizers tackle this problem.
Question for Experienced TOs, Re: Deadbeaters...

jpcloet wrote:I'd start by having a pm conversation with that player.

Hey I noticed that you missed some turns last time.........what's the deal? Will you be able to fully commit to this tournament.......if not, please consider removing your name from the sign up list ......etc.

barterer2002 wrote:I will always give second chances, Most people who are deadbeating out aren't going to want to join the next one anyway but if they sign up I'll allow them in.

EagleofGreenErth wrote:If I get unpleasant people in my tourney, then they will not be allowed into future tourneys. End of story, no exceptions.

There seemed to be a range of opinions from disallowing them, to giving them second chances to ignoring their history. Many organizers, many styles.

This week we had the opportunity to interview coded. All questions were submitted by readers of the newsletter. Next week, we check in with one of the other organisers, Lindax.
You can submit your questions in this thread.

Now, on with the interview!

Q: Hello, coded.

A: Hello Gozar

Q:What makes you interview worthy?

A:I am honored to be chosen to be interviewed. I think I was chosen for my approximately 30 tournaments I've completed or am running right now.

Q:How did you find this website?

A: My good friend introduced me to this site.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A:My first experience was great. Fun games with a diverse amount of maps.

Q:Whats your motivation (or why do you like) to play on CC?

A: There doesn't seem to be an end to the number of goals to accomplish on CC. When I finish one, there's always more for me to try.

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A:The casual games were getting boring. I wanted to try something different.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I looked through the forums one day and decided I could contribute to CC by running tournaments.

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A: It's been a while. I don't quite remember but I know it was fun to do so.

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A:"World Maps 1v1 Tournament"

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A: Natewolfman was an inspiration when I first started and still is today. Nowadays I make tournaments that I personally would find interesting in hopes others would too.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: The first tournament i played in was abandoned very quickly, so I decided to be a better organizer than that and make sure mine were not.

Q:Tell us about your overall tournament experience from when you first joined a tournament to the present day. How has it changed for you? Is it a better experience than before? Worse?

A: The tournament forums have definitely changed. Much more are being run. I'm concerned that many are not well organized and will turn people off of tournaments. I also believe that the influx of new organizers is a good thing though as new ideas circulate.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A: I've run around 30 and I'll run them as long as I'm still on CC and have the time. I'm running around 7 right now. At my peak, I had 15 or so running at a time.

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A: Around 30, currently have 26 I've been credited with a medal, but a few have recently finished.

Q:What is your favourite tournament you have run?

A:"Speed Doodle Assassin Tournament"

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A: The two at a time tournament was really fun because the competition was great.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A:I prefer to run tournaments.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite? What about other peoples' tournaments?

A: People tend to join the small tournaments that fill quickly and are fast hitting. Many of mine cater to these people and tend to fill up fast. My personal favorite are short ones also.

Q:Are you selective about which types of tournaments you join or do you join just about everything you can fit into your personal game load? If you are selective, do you look for certain styles or organizers?

A:I look for experienced organizers who I know won't abandon randomly. I tend to stay away from long ones also because I don't know if I can commit for that long.

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A: It's a lot easier to choose the settings because game creation is a lot easier, but I have a few that let them choose.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I don't play in a lot of tournaments because I don't know if I can handle the game load.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: I've played a lot of risk before on a board and beat my friends a lot, so my win wasn't too exciting for me.

Q:If you had to win one tournament that you are currently a part of which would it be and why?

A:Prime's Singles Championship II because i need the premium membership before my current one runs out.

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A: My finals lost in the "Two at a Time" tournament where I missed a kill due to some bad dice. Winning the tournament would've won me premium membership.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A: One where the players had fun and the winner is not disputed.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A:Speed Doodle Assassin Tournament because of the large number of games played and players who joined.

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A:I'm always pretty happy with my own tournaments. The ones I've entered that were abandoned were disappointing though.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A:One that looks out for the players in their tournaments.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A:A lot of my tournament's players are regular players. If the players know that you run good, consistent tournaments, they continue to join them.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A:Game creation is very tedious.

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A: Seeing good competition in my tournaments.

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A: Starting tournaments that are way bigger than they can handle.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: I've started a tournament when I wasn't able to finish it and I regret doing that.

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clanmates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A: I believe the organizer needs to have integrity and no rules should be placed in regards to this issue.

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A: I wait til the games are completed and just send out the next round games when needed.

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A:I do not believe they should because they might not come back or turn out to be a multi later on. I personally don't allow them, but it should be the choice of the individual organizer.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A:I use reserves in the first round and just give byes after that. I almost never have this type of problem though.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I would remove all players who cause trouble. These people are a small fraction of total players and the loss of them would be much welcomed with a lot more people joining.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: I would like to see a tool to mass make games, or a system to automate it.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Tournament making is rewarding and fun. The initial frustration will disappear quickly if you push through.

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A: I really don't think I have that many. I think I only have 2, which are no shows, and tedious game creation.

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A:CC's a pretty addicting site, so I'd say around 3-5 hrs a day.

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A:I'm not a member of any active clans at this moment and am looking for a good active one, but I'm a member of the Jesus Freaks and Tournament Organizer's Usergroups.

Q: Why did you pick the name coded?

A: I don't remember exactly. I think it was a just a name off the top of my head when i signed up.

Q:Where are you from?

A:West coast, United States.

Q:Favourite play colour?

A:I really don't have one, but green/slate annoy me because they're too close and hard to tell apart in split second speed game decisions.

Q:Favourite and least favourite map?

A:Favorite: City Mogul for its very un-dice dependent games. Least Favorite:

Q:Favourite settings?

A: Doodle Earth, 8 players, Escalating, Freestyle, Unlimited, No Fog, Speed

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A: I play a lot of speed games and 1v1, so I prefer freestyle in those because they take less time and are a lot less dice dependent. I'm trying to move on to a little sequential team games and 6-8 man escalating games however.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: I want to complete my "Around All CC's Maps" series to complete all maps. I also have several other series going and have many others planned. They'll be available to join in the forums soon.

Q:How does it feel to be interviewed?

A:I am honored to be chosen to do and interview for this newsletter.

Q: Any parting shots?

A: Thanks to all players who continue to join my tournaments.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Thank you too.

How to Organise a Tournament (2)

Here is the second edition of How to Organise a Tournament, here we will explain step by step how to organise and run your very own tournament, part 2 is about creating your first post.
(Tournament Handbook)
Part 2
So you have your tournament design worked out, now you want to post it ans start looking for players! I create my first post in the new post window as I can add colours and links easily, it also works well to do it in word, it depends how good your spelling is! Anyway, when creating your post, look at what other organisers have put for inspiration. This is the list of things that your post must include:
Title
Game settings
Theme
Number of Players
Game Type
Extra Info (Deadbeats, ect.)

Some organisers like to put the information all in one big paragraph, others like to split is up with colourful headings and subheadings. Try both and decide which one you prefer.
:D

How to Organise a Tournament (1)

Here is the first edition of How to Organise a Tournament, here we will explain step by step how to organise and run your very own tournament, part 1 is about designing your tournament.
(Tournament Handbook)
Part 1
So you want to create a tournament? Well this is where you start! First you have to decide upon the theme and format of your tournament, for a first time organiser we recommend a simple tournament that specialises in a specific map and settings, like a quick 16 player classic tournament, only 16 pm's to send, if you make it 4 player, the winners go into the final that's only 5 games to make and collect the results for, how much easier could it be! :) you get to run a simple tournament on fun settings and establish yourself in the world of tournament organising. For the tournament after that, you could mess about with the settings, try 1v1 or create a themed/ bigger tournament, once you have taken your baby steps the possibility's are endless! :D

Editor’s Note

Welcome to the third(I believe) issue of the newsletter, and the first with me at the helm. I have stayed very close to spinwizard’s original design, just added some small things here and there. If you have suggestions for me, I am more than glad to hear them.
Also, as the tournament forum environment changes very quickly, I have decided to make the frequency of publication weekly, instead of fortnightly.

Interview with Optimus Prime
Welcome to the first installment of a series of interview with those in the tournament community. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Gilligan. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Steelhorse. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q:What made you want to start running tourneys?

A: I was looking for something a little different to use my time with here on the site. At the time I was only a non-premium member and so I needed a little something extra to fill my time with because I could only play four games at a time.

Q:Describe the experience of your first tournament ran and first played in.

A: The first tournament I ever ran still has not finished. It is the Battle for Middle Earth Tournament, and it has been in the final round for nearly 3 months or so. All of the games have turned into build games in that round and it is becoming somewhat frustrating. As for the first tournament I ever actually participated in, I believe it was the same one, but I got knocked out pretty early. I'm not the most amazing of players after all.

Q:How do you come up with so many ideas for tournaments?

A: Most of my ideas come to me at random times. For example, the other day a big and complicated idea came to me while sitting in my Shakespeare class. Sometimes I'll see another organizer running a tournament and think about how I could do something similar but with a little more flair and go with that idea. Although it usually winds up turning into something completely different.

Q:Which tournament (other than Point Grabbers) is the favorite that you've ran?

A: Overall, I think that my favorite would be Gasoline Crusades or The Allspark League.

Q:You run a lot of tournaments at the same time very smoothly. How much time do you spend per day... no... per week doing tournament stuff?

A: Usually I will do a major update to all of my tournaments at once every 2 or 3 days. If I can sit down uninterrupted it will take me about 90 minutes or so to finish all of them up. On occasion I'll take a little more time to work on things as I get ready to announce a new tournament, or want to look a few things up, but I would say I spend about 15-18 hours a week doing things for just my tournaments.

Q:If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: The biggest help for tournaments will be the forum upgrade to phpbb3.0 which should be coming soon hopefully. At the moment, I can't think of anything they should take away because if they did my life would just be more difficult.

Q:If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I would like to see a little more color added to the basic appearance of the site. The grey/green/khaki feel is nice, but a little variety wouldn't hurt. :) Perhaps we'll see some of that with the forum upgrade.

Q:If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: I think there would be riots if I tried to do that.

Q:Why do you like Transformers? How long have you been a fan?

A: It is the only cartoon I can really remember from when I was growing up. Just the idea of my car turning into a cool robot really gets me going. I have a pretty active imagination, so Transformers seem to fit the bill pretty well.

Q:What is Megatron really like?

A: He really is a softie at heart, but he just feels like nobody appreciates him for who he really is. When nobody else is around he tends to open up a little more and you begin to understand what troubles his psyche and makes him do the things he does.

Q:Why do birds sing?

A: Because they don't want me to crush them in my steel fists.

Q:Any tournaments planned for the future?

A:What do you think? ;) Yes, I have about 15 in the works, but it will take a little while to get them all up and running. Now that I am a Tournament Director I have to pace myself a little more and can't do them all at once. I think everyone will enjoy them though. I have some quick and simple ones as well as some long and involved ones planned.

Interview with Gilligan
Welcome to the second installment of a series of interview with those in the tournament community. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Steelhorse. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with MarVal. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Gilligan.

A: Hello :)

Q: What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I started running tournaments in October of 2006, when if I recall correctly, there wasn't too many being run. So I said "What the heck, let's get some tournaments into Conquer Club. Get some going for the public."

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran and first played in.

A: The first tournament I ran and played in was my own, called The Tournament of All Tournaments (Yes, you can laugh at the name, it's horrible .) When I ran it, it was a great experience and it made me want to do more.

Q: Where did you come up with the ideas for your tournaments?

A: I'm not the most creative person, so I usually come up with tournaments with a map-based theme, like my North American Wars, where you play every map in the North American region. Or Who Rules the School?, where you play every map on CCU.

Q: How many tournaments do you currently run at one time?

A: Now, I currently have 5. One just finished a few days ago, today being the 17th of January, I've yet to start a new one. I usually run around 6.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why?

A: Most of my tournaments ran on "Play the games with your group, person with the most points advances to the final round."

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A: My favorite tournament? That's a tough one. I loved my 4 Man Madness. In that tournament you had to play a 4 player game on every map. It started in May 2007. It just ended a few days ago. At the time, there were probably only 30-40 maps, so I didn't think it would last that long. It lasted 7 and a half months, the Foundry was working faster than they were playing

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: That is again another hard question. I've played in many a great tournaments. Not to sound egotistical, but I love to play in my European Wars.

Q: What do you feel makes a tournament stand out and interesting?

A: Any tournament can feel interesting, you just have to put that element into the theme you want to organize by.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: In In Honor of WidowMakers, I made the bracket wrong. That is probably my worst mistake, other than making games with the wrong setting and having them already started. I did that twice.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: I would like to see Mass PMing, like most organizers would, and something like 'Your search wielded 48 games.' It's fun to see how many games you've had in each tournament and how many games you've started. Something I'd like to see taken away or shaved down a bit would be the Tournament Dropdown Arrow in Game Finder.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I really don't think I would change anything major. I might calm down Flame Wars a bit, but other than that, nothing.

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: Every screen name I have is Gilligan 8). If it's taken it's either Gilligan53, Gilligan811, Gills53, or Gilligan811.

Q: From your avatars and signatures, I would guess you are a movie fan. What is your favourite movie, and which are you most looking forward to seeing?

A: I like the Star Wars saga, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and pretty much any movie based on a comic book. Yes, I'm a geek  I also look forward to Iron Man

Q: Why do birds sing?

A: They envy Gilligan 8) Well, no, I don't sing, but they envy me.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future?

A: Of course! But I've yet to start them or tell anyone about them.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: No, thank you

Interview with Steelhorse
Our latest installment of interviews brings us some information about Steelhorse All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with MarVal. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Gozar. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Steelhorse.

A: Hi, Goze. Nice to be here.

Q: What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I've always loved games of any kind and tournaments are just games within a game. So, when I was offered the opportunity to help CC out with running the Tournaments area, it was a no-brainer for me.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran and first played in.

A: The first, and only, tournament I've run was the Satellite for the 19th Annual Risk Tournament of Champions, in Jim Thorpe, PA., last year. The prize was one seat in the tournament. I was still relatively new to the site, so I was nervous. I didn't want to screw it up and look stupid in front of half a million people. But, I had some friends help me out with the technical stuff, and it all worked out. I'd like to run more, but time is limited and alot of my time on Conquer Club is dedicated to TD and Mod duties.

I think the first tourney I played in was "The Big One," in September of '06.

Q: When did you get the job as tournament director?

A: May of '07.

Q: After Optimus Prime got the tournament director job, did your work load got heavier, lighter or didn't change (for example, requests for tournament privileges)?

A: Hmmm...both  When I first started as a TD, Ak_Iceman needed a much deserved break. So, he trained me on the technical stuff and "how to's", and from there I was pretty much on my own. I was really the only active TD for a while. Then my buddy Optimus Prime came along, who I trained, just as I was. On one hand my load got much lighter as he dove head-first right into the job and he was very familiar with the Tourney area already. This helped immensely. He was able to share, and assumed most of, the load granting privileges, answering questions, and helping wayward tourney organizers.

On the other hand, he has so much energy, enthusiasm, and great ideas to make the tournament area better, that I had a hard time, and still do, keeping up with him. Sometimes, he's like a jackrabbit on crack!!!

All kidding aside, alot of the new features and additions to the tourney area that you've seen over the last few months were his idea and his hard work. CC is lucky to have such a dedicated and hardworking staff member. He's been a Godsend to me. I'd say I raised him pretty well.

Q: How much of a hassle is it to deal with that big kid of a robot?

A: Hehe, see above. No hassle at all.

Q: Why haven’t we seen any tournaments from you in a while?

A: Just RL time constraints. My wife and I had our first child back in June and life has been non-stop insanity ever since. He has more energy than Opt.!!! Come to think of it, he is just like Optimus in that respect. Hmmm, makes me wonder...where was Optimus back in September of '05? If my son ends up being able to morph in to an 18-wheeler, we'll have to have a chat.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: I really like the tournament I'm in that Coleman is currently running, Conquer Club Superstars. It was a unique idea from the start. Or, maybe I like it so much because I haven't gotten knocked out of it yet. He always runs a good tourney.

Q: Why did you pick the name “Steelhorse”?

A: Well, I'm going to date myself, but since 1986 my favorite song has been Bon Jovi's, "Wanted Dead or Alive." You know, "on a steelhorse I ride..." I use Steelhorse, or some variation of it, for most of my online screen names.

Q: Where did you get you avatar?

A: I wish I could say I designed it myself on Autocad or something fancy, but nope. I just Image Googled "Steelhorse" and that was one of the jpeg's that came up. So I stole it. If someone reading this recognizes it from a local business or something...Thanks!!!

Q: What were some highlights for you of the 19th Annual Risk Championships? Will you go again?

A: Easily, the biggest highlight for me was meeting alot of fellow CC'ers and putting faces to names. Everyone I met was awesome and I can't wait to see them again this year, and hopefully, many new CC faces.

I have to go again this year. I'm heavily involved in running it. This will be my 8th year with RiskTOC.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: If there were something that would make running tourneys easier, I think it would be the ability to send mass PM's. I think this is on the horizon, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

As far as taking anything away, or changing things, I dont' think so. You have to remember, this site is only a couple years old. It's still in its' infancy. If you think about what has been accomplished in such a short period of time, by just a few people, it's astonishing. And, it continues to evolve on a daily basis. Are there things that could improve? Sure. And, the powers that be know what most of them are. But, change can seem tediously slow at times. Trust me, Conquer Club is going to do nothing but grow and get better. Stick around and see. Look how far we've come in just a couple years. Imagine what we'll be 5 years from now.

If I didn't believe in it, I wouldn't have chosen to be a part of it.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I'd like the software to be re-programmed so that my dice roll more 6's. No...ALL 6's.

Q: Some say you have a calm demeanor, while others say otherwise. Do you feel there are two sides to yourself?

A: Doesn't everyone have two sides? Most of the time, I try to maintain a calm demeanor. But, as "Fistk" suggested, I have my moments.

Q: Boxers or briefs?..... or bikini!

A: :-k The person who asked this already knows the answer. I'd rather talk about her undergarment proclivities...the Wonder Woman thongs. I had no idea Underoos even made thongs!!!

Q: Are you afraid you will be hanged for stealing a horse?

A: Sometimes I think hanging would be an escape from hell, not a sentence to it.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future?

A: Yes, I will be running at least one satellite tournament between now and October to give away seat(s) for the 20th Annual Risk Tournament of Champions. The tournament(s) will be announced once the exact dates and location of this year's event have been decided.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Thanks, been a pleasure.

Interview with Marval
Our latest installment of interviews, MarVal answers a few questions. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Gozar. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with pjdonald. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, MarVal.

A: Hello all international members of CC, I'm glad somebody wanna ask me some questions about me, myself and I ;-)

Q: What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: My first tournament give me the shot to start a tournament. I'm a fan of international football and major of the European Champions League.
That give me the idea to start my own Champions League and I called it:
CC EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2007

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran and first played in.

A: Immediately I new it was a busy "job" to do. You must create games, update the Tournament Table, sent out the PM's for the games, answer all the questions and look daily on the thread. But I love the work and the response you get back from the members. It was great :-)
And for the winner I made this:
    Image

Q: Where did you come up with the ideas for your tournaments?

A: I think my head is flowing over with ideas. I have plenty ideas, but unfortunately no time to make them all at this moment.
I'm not only a tournament organizer on CC, so it’s hard working here to pay attention on the forums. But it’s worth it :-)

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been?

A: - CC EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2007 (Completed)
- Union of European CC Football Cup 2007 (Ongoing)
- Koning der Lage Landen toernooi 2007 (Ongoing)
- Veroveraars Club Toernooi (Ongoing)
- TO; Qualify, WC 2010 - AFC (Ongoing) *
- TO; Qualify, WC 2010 - CAF (Ongoing) *
- TO;Qualify,WC 2010-CONCACAF (Ongoing) *
- TO; Qualify, WC 2010 - CONMEBOL (Ongoing) *
- TO; Qualify WC 2010 - OFC (Ongoing) *
- TO; Qualify World Cup 2010 - UEFA (Ongoing) *

* = Together with the Tournament Organizers (TO):
- amazzony
- jennifermarie (stepped out, no time anymore. But still make the games of OFC)
- spinwizard (stepped out, no time anymore)
- cena-rules (stepped out, no time anymore)
- and me
So basically amazzony and I run these connecting tournaments

Q: Do you prefer to run tournaments alone or have a long discussion with others and then run it with several people?

A: I prefer to do them alone, but as you can see in a earlier answer of mine I have 1 connecting tournament with other organizers. Spinwizard needed some help for a major tournament. As in my nature I'm willing to help. So I did. Unfortunately they all had no time when we already start it, but with great and greater help from amazzony we still manage to make it happen. Thanks to amazzony =D>

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A: It will be Koning der Lage Landen toernooi 2007. The reason is that its a tournament with a story. And how further into the story, how closer you get to became the King of the Lower Lands. And the story is in and near the middle ages in the area of the map I made for CC: BeNeLux.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: I should now probably say the ones I won, but the favorite tournament ever I've played was the tournament of FlyinHi, called World Series of Risk. It had a original concept and painful I lost a great battle in the final game against NormalGuy.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: Avoiding mistakes I will not make again (I hope):
- Having enough reserve players.
- End the game in some tournaments in a number of Rounds.
- Not all type of tournaments can be played with freemiums in it.
- Good information about the rules and the point system.

Q: Which team would you had liked to see winning the champions league tournament and which club do you hope will win the UECCF cup?

A: The winner of the Champions League is already been known:
    Image

The winner of UECCF Cup must be me with Vitesse Arnhem ;-)

Q: How is life over in the foreign language forums? Do they enjoy a good tournament as much as the rest of us?

A: Yes, they do. We had a lot of fun and of course great battles.

Q: You make some outstanding standings graphics. Do you volunteer these services to others?

A: Not at this moment. Only for our connecting tournaments of TO.
Maybe in the future. Too busy right now on my own tournaments.

Q: What makes you want to use graphic design for standings and not just text?

A: I think it looks smoothly and has a nice view, I guess (I hope).
I like to work with graphics, such as making maps, tournament tables and for some websites I created for others.

Q: How long does this take for you to update?

A: The update itself its not taking so long to make it look graphical. To look at all the games of the tournaments, making the score list that costs time. But it’s worth it.

Q: What are your thoughts on the in-clan tournament issue?

A: I like them a lot. To compete against other clans in several disciplines.
Maybe make a sort of all ranking list Clans or something like that. I know it has a lot of discussion on the thread, but OPs knows what he's doing :-) So we just wait and see.

Q: How is your social life, since you spent so much time on CC?

A: Bad...... No, but most evenings I can do it all.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: Bigger maps to play on, that’s all.

Q: Why did you pick the name MarVal?

A: It has the initials of my real name in it and MarVal sounds like Marvel. My favorite comic books.

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: Bounty Hunter after Boba Fett (just like my avatar) from Star Wars. He's my favorite character.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future?

A: A lot. :-)
I'm working on two tournaments right now. But first must I finished my others, before I start new ones (I hope I can hold them for so long).

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: No probs. Just keep up the good work you do, Gozar :-)

Tournament Updates
Here are how some of the currently ongoing tournaments are progressing. Just click the title to visit the thread.

Fantastic Four: Evil Rises
Organiser: amazzony
We are moving along nicely, people are joining their games fast (I guess chance to win premium encourages them ); smaller groups (2&3-player games) move faster, bigger games take more time due to No Card games (but for next rounds, I've fixed that problem and we'll be using settings that help games to move faster). Fight to know who is the Master Villain continues.

Termination: Classic
Orgainser: amzzony
3rd week about to begin, we are nicely moving on with finishing a game or two per week in each of three divisions. Even with all that terminating, players are behaving well and friendly :D

Conqueror of Conquer Club
Orgainser: amazzony
Round 2 about to end, with a few 1v1 games left to decide which conqueror drops out. I'm very happy that all the participants are giving me time to get things back on track and to normal pace.

1v1 Singles League Season 4
Organiser: amazzony and simor
10 days since the beginning of the league and everything still seems to be going smoothly. Drop outs are replaced with reserve players, standing will be updated before next batch of games starts in a week and players seem friendly. What else can you want from a big league with 100 players and overall 900 games :)

Cairns Coral Coast Masters:
Organisers: Optimus Prime/ Gozar
Four divisions compete for premium membership, on maps designed by the tournament’s sponser, cairnswk.
Division One
smiteo is the winner
Division Two

Interview with Gozar
Our latest installment of interviews, I, Gozar, will answer some of your questions. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with pjdonald. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Night Strike. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Gozar.

A: Hi, tournament fans.

Q: What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I had played in a couple, and realized, ‘Hey, I could do this.’ I thought it would be fun, so I did.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran and first played in.

A: The first tournament I played in was Coleman’s Bracket Tournament. I filled in for someone who had left and was eliminated straight away.
The first tournament I ran was “Battle North America”, which is a simple double elimination setup with three player games. It is in its third incarnation, this time in Europe.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: I was pretty pleased. I had won a lot of board game RISK, so it was not a totally foreign feeling.

Q: How many tournaments have you won?

A: Three.

Q: Where did you come up with the ideas for your tournaments?

A: Often they are inspired by other tournaments. I see what someone has done before and modify it to something more in line with what I want.

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been?

A: I am currently on my eighth tournament. On average they probably take two months to get through, although “The Long Walk” has been going for almost a year.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why?

A: No not really. Depending on what I want to do, the format can vary.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A: I really enjoyed running “Cairns Coral Coast Masters”. It was a huge tournament and I really enjoy the maps that cairnswk makes, so it was great to collaborate with him.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: This is a tough question. Probably one that I have won. :P

Q: Will you ever run a 1 vs 1 tournament?

A: I would not count on it. I do not really like 1v1 very much, and I like to enter all my tournaments.

Q: What tournament did you start hating deadbeats?

A: I guess I have been lucky, in that I never have had much of a problem with this.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: I should not have put so many ‘No Cards’ games in “The Long Walk.” They slow progression of the tournament down a lot. Use them sparingly.

Q: What are your thoughts on the in-clan tournament issue?

A: I hope we have a system set up soon. Until then, creating private games is only a slight inconvenience.

Q: How is your social life, since you spent so much time on CC?

A: I have no complaints.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I would create a separate forum for complaining about dice.

Q: Why did you pick the name Gozar?

A: I had been using it in another online game, and just kept it when I came here. Also, I enjoy the Ghostbusters.

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: That is a tough one. Fenrir maybe. Or someone from ‘The Wheel of Time’ series.

Q: Where did you get your avatar, and what is it?

A: My avatar is me! I got it from my friend after he took a picture of me.

Q: What is it like being an Assistant Clan Leader to Optimus?

A: Optimus listens to my ideas, is open to criticism and is hardly overbearing. All I could ask for. :D

Q: How come you are so cool?

A: Because I did not plant this question here.

Q: Which CCr's would you like to meet and hang out with??

A: Everyone from my clan I would like to meet. I would like to sit on lack’s couch for a day while he does his thing. I think that would be neat.

Q: What is your favorite emoticon?

A:

Q: What do you do on a typical Monday?

A: Up at 6:30 and off to college. Monday’s are usually only half days for me, as my trigonometry skills get me out of math. Then I come home, play some CC and put the final touches on the newsletter. I send it off to simor for him to send out. After that the day is wide open. Most Monday nights I go jam with my band, but one of our members is recovering from surgery, and another is in Tennessee so that has not happened for the past couple weeks.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Battle Europe II as soon as Battle Europe finishes. I have a Canada themed tournament in the works. In the future I may do a Wheel of Time tournament, if a better one doesn’t come out first.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Yeah….no problem, now buy me a drink!

Interview with pjdonald
This week we had the opportunity to ask pjdonald some questions, and he answered. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Night Strike. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with a new organizer, Physics=2muchFD. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, pjdonald.

A: Hello.

Q: What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: When I started on CC (Dec 2006), I played exclusively public games for several months. When I first dipped my foot into tournaments, I found the games to be even more exciting and consequential - even if the consequences were only bragging rights! There are certainly other good tournaments out there, but I had some ideas I didn't see getting played out anywhere else.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran and first played in.

A: As for the first one I ran, there are actually 3 answers to that. The first one I played in (The Race to Defend America) ended up also being the first one I ran. The organizer dropped out early on, so I picked it up for him (partly because I had won my first game, and partly because the idea of a tournament just being abandoned repulsed me).

That sort of happened again with the 2nd tournament I ran. The random map tournament got abandoned midway through the first round. I volunteered to restart it, but I did so under basically the same guidelines as the original organizer.

The first tournament I ran that was truly my own was the 3456 League. I organized this at a time when the 1v1 tournaments were all the rage. I can't stand the 1v1 setup; with all the other setups, luck certainly plays a role, but luck is 75% or more of the outcome in 1v1. I wanted a larger competition that didn't involve 1v1, while allowing people to choose the terrain.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: Pretty juiced. A beginner's luck freestyle win in the first game I ever entered.

Q: Where did you come up with the ideas for your tournaments?

A: I like the idea of participants choosing the settings. And I'm not a big fan of gimmicks like attaching meaningless things to make it sound more interesting (e.g. choose your NFL team). I work hard to make things equitable.

Q: In regards to your 2345678 tournament, how did you come up with this specific idea?

A: Its pretty much an extension of the 3456 league I described above. With 3456, everyone in each division got to choose the settings for one game of each size, but that was going to result in too many games, I felt, in 2345678, so I paired it back. I've tried to seek input on the setups, and I appreciate those that have given it.

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been?

A: 5 I think. The longest was PJ's Random Map Reprise. I think that lasted about 4 months. Though Defend America dragged out for quite a while too, as it was all Flat-Rate 3-player, which has a tendency to stale-mate. The 5th one (still going) is Tossed Salad Doubles. I played very little team games in the first year I was a member, but I've really warmed to it now. I think there is a place for both team tournaments, and individual tournaments using the team setup.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why?

A: I don't plan to run true team tournaments, because there are other organizers who do that very well. I do have some more ideas for somewhere down the line when I get the time.

As far as just playing games, no freestyle, no 1v1, rarely assassin, and rarely terminator (I think there's too much disadvantage for higher-ranked players to be targeted).

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A: I think 3456. It required the most thought and planning. I use spreadsheets a lot in my work, so I enjoy setting them up for tournaments.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: AndrewB's doubles tournaments have been fun. I got to the finals in one last fall, and aim to do the same with goggles p this spring.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: I'm always looking for ways to discourage dropouts. Its tough. I hope I never drop out of a tournament, or worse yet, abandon one I'm running, but I know RL issues come up. But dropouts/abandonment happen too often.

I also have worked hard with each new tournament to establish a predictable schedule and make sure people now what they're signing up for, and to stay on schedule. I signed up for one last year that is still going and the end is not in sight. The original plan would've taken 2 years or more (my fault for not realizing that when I signed up!), and has had to be modified to make it playable.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: No complaints, really! There's a lot of good stuff on those to-do lists I see on the forums, but I know it takes time. I'm really intrigued by Game Log 2.0. It would be nice to see more of what happens round-by-round.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: The mandatory lag between postings makes it tremendously difficult. I understand why its there, but maybe it could be waived for organizers. It greatly increases the time needed to set up games (send out PM's). I've circumvented this to a degree with group coordinators, but that's not a perfect solution either.

Q: How's life in the USA, especially during all the presidential hassle?

A: My guy (Romney) is done, so I'm kind of disappointed. I'm a political junkie, so I enjoy following the stuff. My surfing is pretty much sports, politics, and CC.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Perhaps a follow-on to Tossed Salad Doubles. Not sure if it will be triples or 6-man doubles. We'll see!

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Thank you.

Interview with Night Strike
This week we had the chance to shoot a few questions at Night Strike, and he fired back. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with a new organizer, Physics=2muchFD. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with amazzony. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Night Strike.

A: Hi Gozar.

Q: What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I wanted to find a way to contribute to the CC community with a few good ideas that I had.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament played in.

A: The first tournament I played in was the second season of yorkie's 1v1 league (now run by amazzony and simor). I did fairly well in it, so I was pleased with that. I then played in FA Premiership (Kahless) with spidey, who has become my typical doubles partner, as well as Ultimate Doubles League (nmhunate). Unfortunately, they were both abandoned. :( But then I found Optimus Prime's tournaments and had better experiences.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran.

A: The first tournament I ran was Movie Rental Mania. It consisted of 4 players playing 1v1 games against each other in 4 companies. The top two from each division then played as a doubles team against the other companies for two rounds to determine the winner. I felt that is was run smoothly overall, and I made it to the finals.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: I was moderately excited. I had lost my first few, so winning was much better.

Q: Where did you come up with the ideas for your tournaments?

A: They are an assortment of tournaments, so there isn't a set method. Movie Rental Mania was from my job, Heroes was based on a show that I like, and Amazing Race is because I wanted a series tournament.

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been?

A: I have run 3 tournaments with 1 still taking sign-ups (Mod Wars). There will be at least 4 more variations on Amazing Race, and there is a massive Clan vs Clan vs CC tournament in the works. Heroes has taken much longer than I expected it to, but they've been bearable.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why?

A: I've been avoiding the typical 1v1 or doubles formats. I think those are too common and want to provide other variations. Amazing Race is 3 team doubles, Movie Rental Mania was 1v1 then doubles, and Heroes and Mod Wars are singles with various settings.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A: I think the Amazing Race ones are/will be my favorite. This is probably because of the storyline for each round as well as the different gameplay offered by 3-team doubles matches.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: Oh geez, this one is difficult. I would vote for one that I've won, but that hasn't happened yet - although I hope 2007 College Basketball (flexmaster33) changes that. I've enjoyed the Point Grabbers series as well as Disney Heroes Open, which has been my main experience in triples.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: My main problem has been with finding a fair and workable method for tiebreakers. That's the problem with group play stages.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: My guess is that 95% of my games are either tournament or clan games, including ALL of my active games. I'm currently in Amazing Race: USA, 2007 College Basketball, Trip Through Time, Allspark League, Prime's Doubles League, and 1v1 Season 4. I was recently eliminate from World Cup CONCACAF, Primera Division, and Escalating Classic.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: I wish people would follow the forms/processes that are outlined in the various forums. There are so many posts, especially in Sugs/Bugs, that say things such as "Use the Form." It really gets annoying. Plus the people who post something like "You should have pushed Post Reply, not New Topic." Those people should send the author a PM so they can delete it.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: I personally think that tournaments are not that hard to run as-is. I suppose I would like an additional tab that says Hosting Tournaments that would list each tournament that I'm running and the games within that tournament. As a player, I would like the Tournament/Game Title within the map battle screen. I don't think there's anything that needs to be taken away.

Q: How's your Mod Wars recruiting going? Did you convince many mods to play and was it hard work?

A: Honestly, Mod Wars has gone slower than I had expected. I figured that it would be filled within 10 days. And last week's newsletter didn't produce as many sign-ups as I expected. I've sent one round of recruitment PMs, but I'm going to need to send another. :?

Q: What other forum parts are you visiting regularly besides the tournament ones? Are you even visiting them regularly?

A: I will visit most every forum. I stay away from IK and Flame Wars. My most frequent posts are in G1 clan and Tournaments, but I read a lot in GD and Foundry.

Q: Why did you pick the name Night Strike?

A: It's my typical Halo profile, and I couldn't come up with anything better.

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: I might pick Blackout since that's my clan Transformer.

Q: What is it like being an Assistant Clan Leader to Optimus?

A: It's not usually that bad. My main job is to keep the clan active, and there are no problems with that.

Q: Which CCr's would you like to meet and hang out with??

A: I should probably meet Optimus Prime and Luxurious since I chat with them a lot. Also with my clan members. And of course the Admins.

Q: If only 10 players were allowed to have tournament privileges, who would you suggest they be?

A: Oh boy, should I even delve into this question?? :? I would allow Gozar, Sir Ricco, Forza AZ, flexmaster 33, amazzony, gilligan, Night Strike, jennifermarie, and MarVal. Oh, and I guess Optimus Prime if I must.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Amazing Race: Americas, Europe, Asia/Australia, and World. There will probably be a sequel to Mod Wars. There is a large multi-faceted tournament in the works.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: No problem.

Interview with Physics=2MuchFD
This week we had the chance to talk with a new organizer, Physics=2MuchFD. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with amazzony. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Sir. Ricco. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Physics=2MuchFD.

A: Hello Gozar.

Q: You are new to the organizing scene. What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I came across the tournaments on the forum. It seemed impractical for me the join them myself because I am not a member. That meant that a certain amount of the tournaments would not accept me, and even in the tournaments I could join, I would have to leave half of my game slots open at all times. Since I still wanted to work with the tournaments, I thought it might be interesting to make one myself.

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament idea?

A:

I like the map Feudal warfare, and I wanted to do something involving that map.

Originally, I wanted to do a tournament involving just the middle ages, but I wanted diversity and there were not enough maps. So, I decided a progression through time.

Also, I liked the idea of a less rigid round setup. For example in round 1, you try to capture your opponent’s castle. You start out at Fuedal Warfare to ‘surround’ your opponent’s castle. Then siege the castle in Siege. If you lose there, you have been pushed back out of castle and to Fuedal Warfare. This pattern continues until one team has succeeded in sieging the other’s castle.

Q: Describe the experience of running your first tournament.

A: Sending out all of the PM’s can take too much time, but overall its been fun. The creativity in the tournament idea process was entertaining. Surveying the games (when it is possible due to no fog of war) is rewarding as I can see how well your ideas turned out. There was recently a point where I had no computer access due to hardware problems, but beyond that it has gone pretty smoothly.

Q: How excited were you with your first CC win?

A: I was quite happy. I was playing two of my friends on the classic map. It was my first game in Conquer Club, and I was able to defeat the pair quite soundly with a bit of a turn around victory. The fact that I was able to defeat two great strategists, with a come back from behind victory on my first time on the website was quite rewarding.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: Again, I have not played in any. The fact that joining a tournament as a nonmember would have been troublesome is the reason why I hosted one.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A:
Why: see above.
Where: I start a lot of 2 player Feudal Warfare games (fog of war, no cards, unlimited fortification). All of the neutrals in Feudal War serve to even out early game luck which is prominent in two player games. The Fog of War adds a lot to the strategy. On these settings this map can take a lot of thought, and as such is quite fun.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: It would be so that you can review past games/turns in more detail. The game log offers some degree of detail, but not always the amount you want. If you could replay segments of the game on the map like he were playing the turn in front of you rather than reading the outcomes of his actions in the game log, it would be very useful. You could watch other player’s games to develop strategies, and review your own games to make more informed decisions on your own turn.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: I would reproduce something available in another game I play. In the card game Magic The Gathering, there is a software developed for tournament organizers. You input the participants and the parameters of your tournament, and it gives you the games and pairings. Since it is a card game, it does not actually make the games, but in the CC version it would do so.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Tournaments do not follow the usual constraints regular games do. Therefore IMHO, the best tournaments flow from fresh ideas. By changing the rules, it changes up the same old games, gives rise to innovative strategies, and offers a true test of strategists in seeing how well they adapt. New tournament organizers are the best way to get these. So come up with ideas, start new tournaments, and don’t give up on them!

Q: What other forum parts are you visiting regularly besides the tournament ones? Are you even visiting them regularly?

A: I do not visit them regularly. I would visit the strategy part of the forum’s regularly but there is little useful information there because we are so secretive with our strategies.

Q: Why did you pick the name Physics=2MuchFD?

A: I picked the name because of my AP Physics class. The class can be quite a pain. So: Physics=2muchFD or (since work is Force times Distance) Physics is too much work.

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: The name would be the 42 because it is the answer to life the universe and everything (as stated in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Yes: The Emperor Tournament. It would be a tournament which is a mixture of triples and assassin. Each team at the start of the tournament selects one of their teammates to be their Emperor. If their Emperor is eliminated they lose the game. If they eliminate their opponent’s emperor they win. As I mentioned when talking about the ‘advice to new players’ part, I like innovation. Though my first tournament was not that innovative, this one takes a bit more of a stab in that direction.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: No problem. It was between doing this and my homework, and my procrastination would have been fed anyway one way or the other.

Next week’s interview will be with Sir. Ricco. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Natewolfman. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, amazzony.

A: Hey, Gozar.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A: I love the board game Risk and when a friend of mine suggested me this site then I just had to try it out.

Q: Have you ever played RISK before CC?

A: Yes, many many times and I own a board game myself.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: Very :D As I said before, I've played Risk a lot and so naturally I got impatient when after 10 or so games here in CC I still hadn't won a single game. But I think I've got the hang of it now

Q: Were you excited about your first tournament win?

A: Again, yes, very excited. It's kind of the same story as with previous question. I had played in quite many tournaments already, done pretty well in some of them but still didn't have a win. So, winning Classic Mini Tournament made me happy.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I was a freemium member for a long time and I got a bit bored so I decided to start taking part of a few tourneys. I looked around in the tournament forums quite often and then I think that I stumbled on some abandoned Fantastic Four tournament and I liked the idea of Fantastic4 tourney. So I just decided to give it a try.

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: It depends. As I said, Fantastic4 tournament idea came from abandoned forums and as I'm trying to run them as series then I just try to figure out what could come next and make them according to that. The Scroll is based on a movie and an idea started to form in my head while I was watching it, Cuties came because I wanted to run something girlish and cute fluffy animals popped into my mind because I adore animals. I think that each tournament has it's background but it would be too long if I told about all of them.

Q: Do you prefer to run tournaments alone or have a long discussion with others and then run it with several people?

A: I like it both ways. I'm glad that I've had a chance to run the huge World Cup tournament with others. By others now I mean mostly MarVal because rest of the group has mostly dropped out but but we are doing pretty well if I can say so and MarVal is a great organisers. I enjoy running a tournament in part of the EIOT group. I love to run tournaments with my partner simor. And at the same time I'm very glad that I have my own individual tournaments where I can make all the decisions and run them exactly as I wish without any compromises.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: My first tournament was Fantastic Four: The Birth. I decided to make it very simple so I wouldn't have a chance to make mistakes and when launching it, I already knew that I will be running next Fantastic4 as soon as first one ends. I never imagined that at some point I'll be running 10 tournaments at the same time
First tournament that I played in was yorkiepeter's 1v1 Singles League. It was exactly for me. I played mostly 1v1 games and this tournament was a great way for me to see how good I really am. I really liked the tournaments and the proof is that now, after yorkiepeter isn't running tournaments anymore, we've decided to pick it up and run Season 4.

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been?

A: Right now I have 7 finished, 2 finishing within a month and 9 that will take quite some time to end. About length, the ones that have finished by now, haven't been very long, shortest about a month and longest around 3 months. The ones in progress are mostly 2-4 month tournaments. Though I can't be completely sure because I haven't kept track that closely.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A: This is a really tough one.... Each tournament I've ran or I'm running is important and special for me so I can't pick one. They are all my favourites :D

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I do. I'd say that 90% of my games are tournament games (usually I have 50-70 active games). I find tournament games more interesting to play and as I play games with all settings and (almost) all maps then I see no reason why go to public games where I can meet rude and obnoxious people when I can play in tournaments with great players. I don't mean that everybody outside tournament games are like that but I've had some not nice experience so I prefer the tournaments' "safe" environment :D
Rest of the games are mostly clan games.

Q: Why do you always win the "Battle of Emoticons"?

A: Because I'm a bit twisted  Though it's only 2 out of two  and I can't wait for the third one

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: That either one of these suggestions would be implemented: Suggestion 1 or Suggestion 2

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: I think that the best thing for now (and it doesn't just go about organisers) that everybody is waiting is that there wouldn't be any more server problems. For me it's annoying when I want to start updating tournaments or need to send out messages and I can't because CC is down, slow and/or just impossible.
Taken away? I don't think that there's anything that I would like to get rid of.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Don't take too big bite at the beginning. Go with something easy and simple. Think things through before starting. Make nice colorful introduction post. Simple things that help you get more players and make running the tournament easier. And never forget the most important thing - there are always problems, just don't give up! :)

Q: Do you play a lot of video games?

A: Video games - no, though I've had several Chinese gameboxes (they were cheap and broke down after a few months :P) when I was a lot younger. But I do like computer games and I play them time to time when I find time and good company for playing.

Q: What is your best/favorite map?

A: Classic and Crossword are sharing first place. I adore both maps. Mostly I like classic-type maps and I'm not a huge fan of gimmicky maps though I'm capable of playing almost all maps.

Q: What other forum parts are you visiting regularly besides the tournament ones? Are you even visiting them regularly?

A: I skim through everything except Flame Wars. But mostly I can be found in tournament and clan forum.

Q: Why did you pick the name amazzony?

A: I've used it for many years for internet so it's like glued to me.

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: Probably CelticBeauty (or just Beauty) because I've played another game, Utopia, with it for 3-4 years by now and in a way, the name is important for me.

Q: How many times have you been called a man?

A: 1 too many  When we leave out those who know that I'm female then I think that 90% call me dude or guy or something similar.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: My mother makes this wonderful soup... but sadly I don't know the name in English and my dictionary is stupid :(

Q: Do you like pie?

A: Yes, I do. Especially my grandmother's carrot pie.

Q: Besides you, who is your favorite TO?

A: My doubles partner, co-organiser and bf simor :)

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: I have a few things on my mind but only thing sure is 2 other parts of Olympics but don't know yet when. Fantastic Four will get it's fourth tournament as soon as third one ends, Termination: Classic will definitely get a sequential, 1v1 Singles League wants a Season 5.
I also have ideas that include books and a racetrack but I have to start working out those ideas for decent tournaments.
Oh, and I'm working with simor on a tournament for those who like doubles freestyle because we like it and as nobody has ran it for us then we need to do it ourselves :D

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Thank you!

Interview with Sir. Ricco
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer, Sir. Ricco. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with Natewolfman. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with lordvoldemort. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Sir. Ricco.

A: Hello

Q: Why did you join CC?

A: Well, I am all ways on the look out for new online games. So one day I was surfing the web for some different games and I happened upon this. I always liked playing Risk, but growing up with three sisters, older than me, I rarely got to play.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I have always been a do it yourself kind of guy. So, I thought, “Hey I am just going to do it.”

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: Mainly in the shower or random times in the day.

Q: Tell us more about the World War II Series.

A: There are going to be 9 different tournaments, with each WWII map. The winner and runner up will make it to the final tournament. I still haven’t got the game play done.

Q: Tell us more about your announced Age of Realms tournament.

A: Its going to be big. I think I am going to get 144 to 180 to 216 players. Lackattack is going to donate a prize. I got 6 reserves and a reserve system already lined up. I haven't decided yet. And it’s “Official”.
And no I am not the creator of the Age of Realms Maps.

Q: Do you prefer to run tournaments alone or have a long discussion with others and then run it with several people?

A: Alone for sure. Yes I am having fun running the EIOT with some great organizers, but I have always been a solo person.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: The first one I run was Domination X. I had a great time. I think I only had one deadbeat, and everybody joined their games on time. It run real smoothly except like three games went over 20 or 30 rounds. Maybe even 40.

And the first one I played in was Domination X, too. I got knocked out the first round, so I really can’t say. :P

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been? How many at once?

A: I have completed seven and the longest was CC Season Championship I which was about a little over three months.

I think 9 will be my most I have run at once.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A:Man that’s a hard one. Probably…Battle of Emoticons. I just like the theme of it and the players are really great.
But CC Season Championship I gets an honorable mention.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favorite?

A: I really don’t. I am always trying to think of new ways to play a tournament, instead of the same old. But my favorite probably is the bracket. That way you don’t have to be nice to the losers, cause they’re out of the tournament.
Please no letters on that.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A:I am playing a lot right now. Map Blaster I, Around CC in 8 Rounds, and Around CC Open Season are taking up a lot of game space. If it’s not those, it will probably be the Age of Magic games.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A: A good lay out, meaning, a good a description of the tournament, a clear explanation to the game play and if players think it was a fun tournament when it’s all said and done.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A: I really can’t say, I know a lot of people have put a lot of time into their tournaments and have tried their hardest.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: You want a list. My worst mistake was the first round of Around CC in 8 Rounds. I had to start like 112 games, which I did fine. But when I sent the PMs, some of the games numbers got sent to four people instead of two. All that day I was getting PMs saying, “I went to join this game but its already full”. It took me forever to short it out. Now I double check to make sure.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: Make the map restrictions less, meaning map makers could make bigger maps.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: O.T.I.S.!

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Start small, find out what mistakes you made and fix them. Do this a couple of times and you will be ready to do what you want. It also helps to get your name out to.

Q: Do you have any particular goals for yourself as far as tournament organizing is concerned? If so, what are they?

A:Yes I do. Mainly putting out a tournament everyone will enjoy. I also try to make my standing sheets look more professional. And I try to keep the tournaments updated every day. I also want to find a way where deadbeats aren’t as big of a problem as they are now.

Q: How long do you think you'll continue organizing tournaments?

A: Probably as long as I play CC. But who knows what the world has in hold for me.

Q: What is your best/favorite map?

A:Age of Magic! I love that map.

Q: What other forum parts are you visiting regularly besides the tournament ones? Are you even visiting them regularly?

A: Forum Games. But I haven’t posted a whole lot there lately.

Q: Why did you pick the name Sir. Ricco?

A:Well a friend started calling me Ricco Suave, and I really liked it. And somehow it changed to Sir. Ricco

Q: If you had to choose a different screen name what would it be?

A: I use Col. Ricco, or Elite Ricco in some other games but if I didn’t do those, it would be Death Bringer or something like that. That’s just the way I am.

Q: Name 3 of the most influential people in your life

A: Hitler, Stalin… no I am just kidding. Probably my parents, my youth pastor, and who ever is holding a gun to my head.

Q: Do you have a favorite person on the site?

A: Me of course.

Q: Do you like pie?

A:Love it. I really like it when LV’s mom makes it. I will stop there.

Q: Would you prefer to sing in the rain or dance in hail?

A: I do both…naked!

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Of course. I have as everybody who reads the forum knows, WWII Tournament Series and Official Age of Realms Trilogy Tournament. But I also have two that nobody knows about. The God of CC is one of them. I am going to do one call “One World Economy” OWE for short. This is all I am going to say for now:
Year 2015
Six global Corporation come together to talk about plans for a One World Economy (OWE). Each Corporation wants this done peacefully, at least the CEOs do. The OWE plan has been the most watch plan ever. If succeeds, it will end world hunger and start a world where everybody works together to make money. Then a fateful thing happened on January 3rd 2015. During one of the meets, a bomb goes off and kills all six CEOs. The world goes crazy. With the world depending on the outcome of the meeting, it starts to believe the end is near. Each Corporation blames each other for the bomb, saying that they what complete control of the worlds wealth for there own Corporation. Now there is a rivalry that can not be healed. Six VPs from each Corporation battle it out to take the position of President of their Corporation and put OWE to work for there own corporation. For now a temporary pact between each Corporation has been formed. You must now take over towns, countries, continents, and regions for one goal - to make money. Once you have enough money you can take the job of President and wage war on each Corporation. Deadline – 10 years till the board names their new President.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: No problem, I had fun.

Interview with Natewolfman
This week we had the chance to talk with organizer, Natewolfman. All questions are reader submitted, so if you have something you want to ask an upcoming organizer; PM me. Next week’s interview will be with lordvoldemort. If you have not submitted your questions, you have until Tuesday to either PM me, or post in this thread.
In two weeks, our interview will be with Tieryn. Feel free to begin submitting your questions now, I have created this thread for that purpose.

Now, on with the interview.

Q: Hello, Natewolfman.

A: Yo.

Q: Why did you join CC?

A:I was actually searching Google for an online risk game to DL, and by chance stumbled upon the site.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: I started running tournaments after I had played in so many, and after being in a few that were quite poorly run I thought 'ehh, why not?' lol

Q: Where did you come up with your tournament ideas?

A: Here and there. For the most part I try to create somewhat new ideas, but most just come to me, and as they do I make them ;)

Q: Do you prefer to run tournaments alone or have a long discussion with others and then run it with several people?

A:Well, aside from EIOT, and The Ultimate Classics League, I haven’t done too much in the way of co-op, but I’m certain when you get a group together, you can come up with much better ideas, which interests me. 8)

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: Well, The first tournament I ever ran was (and still is) 'The Kill or be Killed tournament'. Its a VERY slow moving tournament, but I like it. Terminator style gameplay, and the only way to advance is to eliminate another player, which means the number of players to advance each round is not set in stone. The first I ever played in... If I can remember that far back lol, I think is WWII tournament hosted by Forza, and believe it or not it’s still going on, since in the second round they had a game to over 100 rounds. :P

Q: How many tournaments have you run and how long have they been? How many at once?

A: I think right now I have around 10-15 going... including those still in the waiting for players status.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you've run? Why?

A:I Think my favorite is the Best of the Best series, and I like hosting it because it is so fast paced, I play 8 players per map, having new player advance for every map.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in?

A: THAT is a hard choice... I think my favorite format is 'The Conquerer of Conquer Club' I love playing in a team format.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favourite?

A: I try to keep it changing, move it around, I don’t like to host a lot of the same so, but I’ve had more 1v1 then anything for the simple fact that, 1v1's are what people like to join.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I’m playing in a ton of tournaments, I couldn’t even begin to guess how many... but aside from tournament play, the only games i play are team games, mostly triples.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A:A tournament is a success when the players are happy, when you see good fun competition and no harsh feelings left behind.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A: That’s another tough one... I’ve seen many great tournaments run by organizers much better then I... I don’t think I can answer this one in a straight answer :?

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A: PMing the contestants! I can’t wait until a mass PM system is created, PMing is tedious especially with the larger tournaments, then if you make one little mistake you must rePM everyone.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: The worst mistakes (as mentioned above) once or twice I have made an error while PMing players, wrong game number, wrong password, so always double check your PM's before sending them! Also, as time went on I learned to make descriptions in your tournaments more specific to avoid confusion (though it still happens from time too time) ^^''

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: An effective way to weed out deadbeats, I don’t know how it would be done, but its a nice dream :P

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: To make running tournaments easier... I suppose the best way to make it easier, is awareness, I’m sure there are hundreds of players who would play in our tournaments if they knew about them.

Q: If you were Tournament Director for a day, what would you do?

A: I would bend all of CC to my will!
>.>
<.<
did I type that out loud?

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: Most of this has been answered by past interviews, but the best thing to remember is patience, It takes time to gain players, to wait for games to finish, etc. So have patience and things will go smoother ;)

Q: Do you have any particular goals for yourself as far as tournament organizing is concerned? If so, what are they?

A: Well... I suppose the only goal I can really set is to create something on CC tournaments that is truly memorable! A series that people will jump at to join similar to how Point Grabbers is perhaps.

Q: How long do you think you'll continue organizing tournaments?

A:ehh, no end in sight :P

Q: What is your best/favorite map?

A:Really, anything that is standard gameplay style, like classic only different countries.

Q: Why did you pick the name Natewolfman?

A: That’s my name in most every site I join. Well, my first name is Nate, and I love wolves... a friend of mine back in middle school once called me ‘wolfboy’, so on a whim I made it a screen name, and it stuck all these years.

Q: Where did you get your avatar, and what is it?

A: The avatar is Tiberon, a pirate from a game called 'Warsong'. Its one of my favorite RPG's of all times, and it’s for the sega genesis.

Q: Who do you respect the most in the tournament organizing community? (Player or Organizer).

A: I definitely have a lot of respect for Prime.

Q: What is your favorite movie?

A: gah, so vague... I love the dark movies, Tim Burton types, Seven, Batman Begins, etc.

Q: If you died today where would you go?

A: Hopefully not into an unmarked grave by a disgruntled friend :P Afterlife wise, no specific belief in mind.

Q: If there was a fire and you could only save lordvoldemort or Sir. Ricco; who would you choose?

A: SAVE THE TV!

Q: Name 3 people in a movie that are inspirational to you

A: In a movie? lol no clue :P

Q: Why does it rain?

A: The angels are crying  ... or maybe the water is just evaporating into the air... either way!

Q: I have seen you give some people nicknames. Where do you come up with them?

A:  I do this in real life as well... I’ll call people by what pops out at me. :P For example, lufsen75, I called him Lucifer because his picture is of the pope with lots of flames in the back, which slowly translated into just calling him 'The Devil'.

Q:Which came first the chicken or the egg?

A: Obviously the egg came first BECAUSE whatever laid the egg that bore the chicken obviously wasn’t a chicken QUITE yet.

Q:How do you feel about apathy?

A:Apathy is me in most situations :P I’m a very indifferent person.

Q: Do you like pie?

A:I could eat pumpkin pie all day every day for a year and not get sick of it :D

Q: What is your IQ?

A:ehh... 120something last time I took a test.

Q: How do you feel about global warming?

A: Not really my favorite map to play on ;) BUT Stephen Colbert says that global warming is real because Al Gore’s environmental movie made money and therefore it is true.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: I am actually hoping to make a tournament based on the board game Clue here soon, be on the lookout ;)

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Anytime! Have fun out there conquer club!
