[Abandoned] - Indian Subcontinent

Postby InkL0sed on Tue Feb 12, 2008 10:26 pm

Mod Note: Simila Map developed --> viewtopic.php?t=58715

Stamps:
Image
# of Territories: 30
# of Continents: 6

Version 15:

Image

Changes are many. No small version this time. Comments please.

Version14
Large:
http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/5640 ... v14yr6.png
Note: my large map doesn't need [bigimg] because it's 700 x 700

Small:
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/2386 ... v14sw9.png

Major changes:
River: I made the river very thin where it isn't a border, and removed that confusing thing saying "Not a border: --". I think this may be the solution; I think it's clearer, anyway.
Legend: I knew the legend had some readability problems, so I played around with it, and you can see the results. What do you think? Is it ugly? Does it go well with the rest of the map? Did I go overboard?
New Layer: Like I mentioned in my last couple of posts, I added a black layer with a canvas texture at 9% opacity on the top. Basically meaning that the entire map has been darkened, and also has a slight touch of texture. What do you guys think of the effect?

I also added a note in the bottom saying that Sri Lanka borders Tamil Nadul. I really don't want to start drawing attack lines, but if enough people think it necessary I guess I'll have to do it.

Version 13 (Feeling lucky?):

Large version:
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/6255 ... v13zp9.png

Small version:
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/9506 ... v13ng8.png

It's been a while, but I've finally managed to post something different enough for an update. The major changes are the fact that I now have a small (and quite cramped) map, and that Eastern India has finally changed to +1. I've also had the idea that maybe the problem with the river can be solved if I just make the "not a border" parts extremely thin...

Points of Discussion:
-Colors in Legend
-River
-Probably other stuff

Version 12:
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/3073/indiav12af9.png
Thumbnail(it's slightly cut off at the side, but it isn't such a huge deal):
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/3073 ... af9.th.png

Changes:
-Changed the river distinction (added a stroke effect)
-Changed the font. Does this look better?
-Fiddled with the army circles

Version 11:
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/7448/indiav11of1.png

Changes:
-created two "types", if you will, of river. Hopefully this will help clarify what is a border and what isn't.
-changed army circles
-moved the legend to the water
-enlarged the numbers on the mini-map
-changed borders between non-playable area and the map itself
-similarly changed coastal borders
-Changed East India to +2

To do:
-better position some of the names of territories
-Southern India in the legend is too light -- so I'll darken it
-Clean up some of the coastal borders

Version 10:

http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/858/indiav10ys5.png

Changes:
-Improved the river
-Changed the path of the river in an attempt to make West Bengal more clearly one territory
-Added a title
-Played with the legend colors... again
-Lessened the shadows in some places

Version 9:
I know it's been a while, but here it is.
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1754/indiav9qv1.png

Changes:
-Made the image "pop" a little more, with a little help from the Inner Shadow layer setting
-Set the mini-map to Dissolve, in an attempt to make it look like it is dissolving into the background
-Changed Delhi to Uttaranchal

Comments? Am I moving now?

Version 8:
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/4564/indiav8gt8.png

Changes:

-added a pop-up effect and shadows to the army circles
-increased legend size
-added a small glow to text and water
-blurred the mini-map

I think that's everything.

Version 7:
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/3233/indiav7xk0.png

Changes:
-Fixed pixelation in the borders between the mountains/non-playing area and the map itself.
-Army circles get a texture, and reduced opacity
-Other minor tidy-upping

No comments of my own. You guys make them. :)

Version 6:
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8086/indiav6lr1.png
Changes:
-Changed font color, to contrast with the borders
-Increased font size by 1 point
-Changed Southern India's color to a shade of blue because the font became illegible there
-Redrew borders
-Changed out-of-play area again. This time I added another layer with the same texture as the water, and also a crayon-texture, and then made all three textures opaque. I rather like this blend.
-Color-coded legend
-Added a mini-map
-Added Haryana into Himalayas for better gameplay.
-Bonuses changed because of this

Questions:
-What do you think of the colors? Also, why are they duller than they look on my desktop (even in png format)?
-Are the borders improved? Do you like the line for the coast?
-Is a connecting line between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadul necessary?
-Thoughts on bonuses (specifically East India and Central India)?
-What should I name the purple continent (what is now Himalaya and what was Nepal in previous versions)?
-Is it clear that West Bengal is a single territory?

Version 5:
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/7715/indiav5yb7.png

Version 4:
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/8552/indiav4uw3.jpg

Version 3:

Version 2:

There's actually a pretty decent south asia map lying around here somewhere... the word 'jewel' appears somewhere in the title if memory serves. Worth a look.

I think it's "India - Jewel in the Crown" or something.

I'd send a PM to constricker if only for courtesy's sake. Or, perhaps a mod / CA could try to email him.

It'd be better to just finish that map since so much work was put into it and honestly there's not much left to do.

Version 2:

Image

Changes:
-Gave the continents colors
-Split the territory at the tip of India

My main problem is the number of territories. I only have about 24 or 25. I'm not so sure on how to further divide the territories. Any thoughts on this problem will be appreciated.

Also, how do you guys feel about the textures?

i prefer the land texture that you used for version 1.
the water doesn't look so good though...

as for how you're going to do this, you might consider using contrickster's map as a model. he did a very good job with the continents and impassables.

what is the status with his map, btw?
it doesn't seem to have been officially abandoned.
such a shame to throw away all that work.

i agree with edbeard, you should try to contact contrickster.

it'd be best if constricker finished it, but getting someone else to finish it would be better than starting a new one.

Even if that map gets finished, I think this one is sufficiently different to keep going. This is based more on realistic geography. I also don't like the idea of finishing up someone else's map (I'm trying to use this as a learning experience, to get some Photoshop skills. Right now they're pretty basic).

I think the textures are a bit too strong - try others and perhaps also lower the opacity on that layer.

here´s an idea on how to split up Balochistan - the princely states/provinces before 1955 but still in use after the independence:

Vidarbha seems to be considered a somewhat distinct region from the rest of the Maharashtra state, both historically and contemporary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vidarbha

What number of territories are you aiming for?

The textures are still completely up in the air.

Baluchistan seems like a good idea, I will put that in.

I'd like to have around 40 territories, but I suppose I could settle for something like 36. Or I could just deal with the fact that it's a large landmass, but a small map.

Changes:
-Added army circles
-Added territory names
-Split some more territories, for a grand total of 32-ish
-Changed mountain texture back to the original
-Brightened up the water with a new, slightly opaque layer, so the texture is almost invisible
-Added the Ganges River as an impassable (and diverted greatly to fit the gameplay)
-Added another continent
-Added a legend

if you're going for geographical accuracy, im all for it, but a river running thru a territory is kinda weird, especially the way it looks now. clean it up a little?

I could move it closer to the border of Uttar... but I don't think I can bear to make it follow the border perfectly where it makes that little horn-shape. That would be too strange.

Unit 2, I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful, but like I've already told you, I don't even use GIMP.

I also know how to use the brush tool

Nor did I ask you to work on the map.
