RECENT UPDATES
  • Renamed territory "Wildlife Marine Resource" to it's original name "Fort Johnson"
  • and "East Cooper" to "Wando Port".
  • New water route was added from Folley Beach, West Morris to Parrot Point. This makes the +3 bonus fair (same now as Isle of Palms).
  • Went back to original "blocky" text. After looking at this map for over a year, I tend to come back to this original font. There's something unique about it. I know some expressed concerns over readibilty, but on all 3 of my computer monitors, I have no problems with the names. I really don't think it's a big problem.
  • I also went back to include the army circles. I know that they are not necessary, but I just like how they look on the map.

EDIT
Charleston was a focal point of the American Revolution, and the American Civil War. It is the 2nd largest port city on the US East Coast. It's also my favorite city in the US! Many historic battles took place here, although this is not a "historic" map. It is based on present day borders.

I decided to revisit my abandoned Charleston, SC map. I love the city too much to let it fall into the furnace. I'm most likely going to keep the graphics simple, since there are 60 territ's and too much fluff gets confusing (at least to me). I am still experimenting with the style - I do want to add some local flare, but that will come in later updates.

Discussion Points
  • Does anyone have a MAJOR problem with the font style?

things I don't like:
Pixely borders(but neither do you so no probs there)

Rivers through territories, just sort of bothers me they don't look great graphically and they don't help game play, if anything the confusion hinders it.

I really like the water, title, and legend so whatever you do don't change that, everything else is looking pretty darn good.

Rj Beals...sorry but this has to start in New Ideas (Heating) and progress out to Foundry.
Perhaps you could get a poll going to create some discussion etc.
Also, a post on the concept and why you'd like to see this map succeed.
While i might like the graphics and think this could prove worthy, the foundry still has to approve also. :)

Come on cairns... anything? Should I add some trees? I didn't get to the bridges / land connections yet? Are the color too weak? Is is too confusing? Is Charleston not globally known enough to pursue a map?

Looks pretty good, maybe you could add attack lines between islands?

In my opinion the only thing better about this new revision is the borders.

Hmm... I'm afraid that not enough people know the city of Charleston, therefore there probably will not be much interest in the map.. It's a well known city in the south-east USA, but not really world-wide.

14 Votes to continue / 1 vote against.

Seems there is some interest in this map, but not too much discussion. Any more feedback before I waste more time?

Charleston....Rj....perhaps was it famous during the American War of Independance? Fort Sumter....USS Yorktown what are these terts...famous...perhaps try tourist atttactions....large industries etc.

Try sonething along those lines....

I do very much like your map....i think this is large version?....
the continents are very large though...i.e. lots of terts.
It's looking quite polished....but just not enough interest generated!
Planning on doing some marketing? to the masses. :)

:D

Thanks.

Yes I struggled with those USS York, Battery, Fort Sumter... very much tourist attractions now, but large battles took place there during the American Revolution (British), as well as American civil war (North vs. South). The main city of Charleston (Historic District "Yellow") has tons and tons of history. Lots of Plantations surrounding where slaves worked in the fields. Yes - 60 territories on this map so it's quite large, however it's pretty straight forward. No bombardments or city bonuses or underground tunnels or one-way attacks. I may make the bonuses higher though as it will be tough to hold an entire bonus region. I don't like hard colors on maps which is why i stick to pastels. This is the large map. Small one not created yet, it may prove difficult with all the army circles. I am still (or was still) working on the land connections. I'm not sure I like the larger "land" dots where they all connect. I do like the dotted lines though for the paths.

Anyways, thanks you 2 for the feedback.

gamepaly wise it looks fine, but i went to check out the bonuses and found the colors rather annoying. On my laptop screen alot of them appear similar so im really not sure whats what. Can you make the colors contrast a little mroe so that i can check them out. Im assuming youve still to do graphics in more detail so il leave comment for them at the moment.

First of all, great start on the map. And since you asked, I checked out the original map you made and I like it better. The territory colors are more vivid and defined and it has more of a 'warm' feel. I like the street texture in the historic district (maybe you could add farm field texture in the rural territories) and the trees along the map edge. I also like the swampy dead area between Mt. PLeasant and Isle of Palms. To me the revised map is too sterile.
I was also thinking if you liked using the historic aspect of Charleston, pick the aspect that you like most about Charleston and use that to market it. For example, you could name the map 'Battle of Charleston 1863' or 'Charleston Revolution' or a futuristic 'Shadows of Charleston' to define your map. Accordingly you may need to adjust the landmark territories. I like the idea of one-way bombardment attacks and tunnels in a particular historic map, just my preference though. I also like dotted lines for ferries and bridges for bridges.
Finally , as for Charleston itself, I dont think most people care about the city or its history like you do, but as long as the map is fun to play people will come.
Keep up the good work!

Don't know guys. Now that work has started slowing down a bit, I may have more time to tinker with maps. I really want to get my iceland map moving again, then perhaps pick this back up.

It's a nice-looking map and it doesn't have a lot of gameplay frills, so I'd definitely be in favor of seeing this map get revived.

As far as whether or not charleston is famous enough... well, I'd be willing to bet that not too many people would be able to point out the cairns coral coast on a map... :D

and btw, having been to charleston once, it's a gorgeous city. Granted, I spent 98% of my time in the city either eighty billion sheets to the wind or so hungover that I thought I was going to die, but still, nice place. Little disconcerting to be walking down market street and find out that it's called market because it used to be the site of the slave markets.

  • I need to add bridges / attack routes between the islands.
  • I need to work on the bonus regions. Now I have 5 of th 7 islands broken into 2 regions. Same colors, just different brightness values. Each region has it's own bonus. I could keep just the 7 islands, and huge bonus amounts for them, but I think it's better for gameplay to have more smaller amounts.
  • Of course, bonus amounts will come after attack routes are added.
  • Tacktics - I look to you for feedback as well, as you live in the city of Charleston (also, your Citadel map is from here).
  • Not sure about the gameplay. Fort Sumter may be able to bombard surrounding areas? Maybe misc regions all over the map? Maybe just another straightforward map with no gimmicks? We'll see.
