Version 18.3--------------------------------------------------------

Changed top right corner rips.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6674/romaniaupdate183largelp7.png

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5929/romaniaupdate183smalloa5.png

Version 18.2---------------------------------------------------------

And so it came to pass that:

The top left edges were fixed up a bit.
Another little cut was added at the bottom left.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/6808/romaniaupdate182largead4.png

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/429/romaniaupdate182smallue7.png

Version 18.1----------------------------------------------------------

Smoothed the edges and played with the drop shadow.

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9135/romaniaupdate181largein4.png

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1227/romaniaupdate181smallcw6.png

Better?

Version 18--------------------------------------------------------------

As the prophecy decreed:

- Added some shadowing around the ripped edges, and a couple of extra rips.
- Moved the Bistrita - Suceava border to take it off the fold and make it clear.
- Added the blood drips at the bottom right.
- Moved Salaj and Constanta territory names off the borders.
- Fixed the tiny guff at the coat of arms.
- Worked on the page curls, and added some shadowing overing the wood at the curls.

What you need to know: 42 Territories
6 Continents
Standard Gameplay with a +1 Auto-Deploy on Bucharest.
Positions tag for Constanta and Tulcea to prevent continent drop in 1v1.

Where now, brown cow?

Version 17.5------------------------------------------------------------

Updated:

- Moved the Tulcea territory name.
- Removed the "grunge" line on the minimap.
- Lightened the Muntenia continent colours.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/632/romaniaupdate175largety4.png

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3645/romaniaupdate175smallzx1.png

Version 17---------------------------------------------------------------

In the latest:

-Moved the mountain at the Suceava pass down a little to make the gap clearer.
-Shuffled a couple of the territory names where it was plausable to not be squished.
-Made the mountain and river in the legend more opaque.
-Added a border around the river at Constanta.

Small:

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/4692/romaniaupdate17smallmouzg1.png

Version 16.6-------------------------------------------------------------

And on the latest episode of the young and the Romanian:

Mucked about with the Black Sea wording to ensure non-mixing with Dobrogea.
Very mild playing with the colouring on Teleorman and Arges.
Translated Black Sea
Fixed a layering/spelling thingy with Moldova

Small:

Version 16----------------------------------------------------------------

By popular demand I have:

Used a differently shaped mountain at Prahova as well as altered the border. This will hopefully make the pass clearer?
I darkened the continent names somewhat.
    I darkened the Bucharest star.
The consensus seems to be to keep the creases....and I like them. So they'll stay for now.

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/3839/romaniaupdate16largepu5.png

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/905/romaniaupdate16smallht2.png

Version 15-----------------------------------------------------------------

Tried something a little different to arrive at the preferred middle ground shade. I had the technology to make it stronger, better faster...

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/4189/romaniaupdate15dimlayereq4.png

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8113/romaniaupdate15dimlayerbn9.png

Same question really. Clearer? Better shade?

Version 14------------------------------------------------------------------

Updates:
Mainly, I worked on the grunge factor. Did it a little differently to attempt to ensure that it doesn't muck with the clarity overly. The coloration is mildly different for the grunge layer and the amount of age "noise" is slightly less.
Moved territory names off borders. One or two of them still hit border, mainly to ensure space for army numbers on the small map.
Darkened the territory names and the inner borders on the small map, to make sure they are still clear on it.
Tried some drop shadows around the edge of the map but it didn't really look good in my opinion. I want it to look flatish on the table, rather than lifted off. Does anyone else feel strongly about the need for shadows?

Main question: Does it look old yet clear enough for gameplay?

Small Image:

Version 13------------------------------------------------------------------

Okie dokie.

With DiM's suggestion, and a tip here and there, I have updated the graphics to be more parchemnty cubed.

Updated: Grunged it up.
Edges and curls.
Darkened Muntenia (colourwise) to make it easier to distinguish the continents.
Folds across parchment.

you have no idea what timing you have with this idea, foregone. no idea. #-o

Anyway, really nice start. Can I suggest you add the capital - Bucharest - since it is independently administered from the counties shown. That would bring you up to 42 territories, which is a much better map size since it is divisible by 3, 4, and 6 players. (Can you tell I've put some thought into a Romania map!)

lol, sorry man. Will take a look at putting Bucharest in. If I start messing it up or you have better ideas feel free to let me know though, heheh. Will put the next version up over the weekend then, probably.

a ha, i figured out what you're missing - that little, landlocked territory in the south is actually two distinct administrative regions: the county (judete) of Ilfov, and the municipality of bucharest. Split that in half somehow and you have 42.

Great start FYI. I'm not a big fan of the easy to catch, easy to hold, green territory though.

Also, where are the Vampires and werewolves and stuff? :D

+10 for transylvania seems like a lot.... especially since it would be extremely hard to hold

someone dropping there in a 6 player game is screwed... lets say 4 of his 7 territs are there... he has no chance of holding it or even taking all of it, while the other players get to take all the smaller bonuses and rock his world

Originally I had the bonuses quite a bit lower. Made use of the bonus calculating spreadsheet thingymabob to get to the numbers as they are at the moment. But it does seem normal that the harder to hold the higher the bonus?

Are you suggesting just that I drop the bonus level there or that I take a look at the continent compositions?

take a look at continent composition... i mean, there are continents like asia in classic that are big and hard to hold, but if you take ukraine, it becomes much more doable... i don't see any way that transylvania can be maintained especially if you get stuck having to start there in any game besides maybe 1v1

I could take a look at essentially splitting Transylvania in two (on the east west axis) which will make them considerably smaller, and easier to hold...

Are there any other natural borders in Romania that could be used to help this map?
Right now, everything seems way too wide open. It looks like the only places you could reasonably expect to hold for a turn are Moldavia, Dobrogea, and maybe Mabanueri. The others have tons of borders that would make them almost impossible to hold.

What are the dark spots on the image? Like the rings next to the map title.
We're you going for a paper/old map kind of feel, and those are stains on the paper?
If so, I think you'll need some kind of texture on the paper, so it actually looks like something, and not just a smooth tan area with some smudges on it.

Added a mountain range at the bottom of Transylvania (which emulates the actual geographical map of Romania) which should cut down considerably on the long borders.

i think transylvania is fine like that if you keep the mountains there, but then at this point i feel like 10 is too high of a bonus, because if you hold it, the next turn you get a huge bonus, take all of the yellow continent, and just block up those 2 holes...

maybe 6 or 7 at the most would be good for me...

If you're going for an old parchmenty look then get rid of the drop shadow on the title. It looks really out of place given your theme.

1) I dont really care for the stains, they dont look that good.
2) The shield looks cool! but something about it just doesnt look right... cant figure out what...
3) are you going for a parchment type look? if so, maybe make the colors of the continents dimmer, and if your using GIMP, look at this tutorial if you like: http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/old- ... paper.html
4) Your going for a parchmenty look it seems, and having a scroll of parchment right next to it doesnt seem to fit... maybe move the legend over to that area in the lower left corner? if u change the legend text then it might work :D
5) Speaking about the text, I dont care for the text at all. Its to hard to read.
6) Could you take away the army circles? in my opinion, this map would look better with no army circles :)
7) The borders on moldavia(..?? did i get that right? i cant read the legend name ofor it that well..) looks weird, cause it seems to have a yellowish glow around it

Keep up the good work!

also, maybe if you want to, look at this tutorial: http://www.jezelf.co.uk/tutorials_map02.htm

it may help for the parchment look, if not, thats okay :)

I like them, but I'll maybe lighten them considerably to give them an older feel, etc. I'll play with it and when I update you could tell me if you still don't like them.

bryguy wrote:2) The shield looks cool! but something about it just doesnt look right... cant figure out what...

Hmmm, I'll see if I can give it different looks.

Thanks, took a look at it. I do have a backdrop for parchment on currently. I'm probably gonna fade everything out considerably which will make the texture come out alot stronger. With that I'll be fading out the continent colours and if necessary playing with the colour selection. Should be all right though if I fade them.

Definitely, trying to find a way currently to make the legend work better. Also mucking about with fonts at the moment, trying to find something that fits, is more legible and still has the right feel (like handwriting but neat, etc).

bryguy wrote:6) Could you take away the army circles? in my opinion, this map would look better with no army circles :)

Will put up two versions, with and without army circles, for comparison.

Needs some cleaning up. Will be done.

Done and done, see 4.1. Assuming "start" = star, they should be more visible now.

Looks better with the lower opacity colors.
But now I think the green continent might be too faded. could you make the green a bit more visible, but leave everything else the same?

And the borders on the map are very pixellated, especially in the pink continent. Could you try redrawing them so they would be a bit more smooth?

I can. Will give it a shot. Because of the nature of the colour if I make it come out too strong it looks overly bright but will try some happy medium.

Will do, though thats probably one of those things that'll take a little time, heh. Unfortunately any lurking artistic talent I have does not extend to hand eye co-ords, heh.
