Classic: Shapes and Classic: Art

Postby lackattack on Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:42 pm

Fellow Conkies,

I want to apologize for the way things went down when, without any warning, we replaced our beloved Classic map with the "lucky charms" version. Same for the unusual way we came up with the Art version. Normally, we like to run things transparently and seek community input before making major website changes. This time that wasn't an option. Any further changes to these maps is also not an option. Believe me, I would love to bring back the original Classic as much as you do, but that is not in the best interest of our club.

I'd like to thank the "Star Chamber" for their stellar contribution - designing Classic: Art in just 12 hours to give all of us an interesting alternative to Classic: Shapes. I'd also like to thank the Map Foundry and all of you that showed support and patience during this period.

Now it's time for me to shift my focus back towards programming new features :ugeek:

Long live the Conquer Club!

Thanks, in just 2 small paragraphs you still failed to answer the majority of our questions. Apology not accepted.

So there won't be a revamp of those two?

I must humbly suggest that you reconsider.....

Legals issues with Hasbro, as was inevitable from day one. The more important question than "why" though, is "what now?"

Really Lack. Just hold off a few minutes on programming, and answer some of the massive amounts of questions this site has been waiting for. So there's no more classic.. ever? What are the limits? Surely we can still have some form of a map based on continents.

Not with similar gameplay as Classic, I'm afraid :(

What are the limits? Could we just change one of the connections / borders? Have the same basic gameplay? Just tweeked? Or can we not even get close to being able to compare it to a risk map?

The star team has not given many details in the foundry.

Okay... good. At least there is a firm boundary.

You say, "Any further changes to these maps is also not an option." - is this because the Hasbro legal team said so? We're stuck with these maps? You going to keep that "classic" as the pictured map on the home page? Are you going to rethink the way the maps selection screen is laid out currently? Maybe have a classic gameplay section with many different graphics to choose from? And then the rest?

Lack - would you be open to post a time you'll be in live chat for the community to "chat" with you about this, rather than post after post in this thread?

Why don't we just archive the old Classic games and then just not not have any Classic map at all? We have other sufficient maps to use and, really, classic shapes and art aren't any fun... So if Hasbro says we can't use Classic, then we won't, we'll just continue with our other 100 maps. Why do we need to have a Classic Shapes?!

If ''classic art '' is allowed, than why can't we make a new classic map, with other names, but better looking than classic art ??

No thanks.
I'd much rather have it look odd than not be able to play it at all.

so it is illegal for conquer club to have a "risk"-inspired map of the world

yet it is perfectly fine for dominategame, and others, to use one...?

What if someone made a map with very similar gameplay, but with differently shaped continents and territories, and with different names?

I don't see why we couldn't at least get something abstract that looks good instead of these two maps. Have people at least say, "that looks cool."

Just because they're getting away with it (for now) doesn't make it legal. And we don't know the nature of another site's relationship with, um, let's call them The Mother Ship. Is the Mother Ship skimming somebody's profits? Are they flying low, under the Mother Ship's radar?

I'm going to float an idea here... every time somebody writes a public post to the effect of "Let's make a map that looks like Classic and plays like Classic but has different names," they have effectively killed that idea - however good the idea may be - because we've just transmitted our intentions to the Mother Ship. Publicly making known your intentions to subtly infringe upon somebody's copyright really isn't subtle at all!

I would say our best bet is to make a graphically improved version of classic shapes/art.
AND
A new world map with different game play.
A question about Centerscape. Is there any reason that we can't just use the old image and remove the Middle Earth names and put it back up? The game play and image are already different than Hasbro's version.

In fact Hasbro's image is quite nice.

Just did a bit of on-line research... according to some sources, Dominategame was shut down by the Mother Ship a few years ago. Rather than creating and hosting maps that may violate the Mother Ship's copyright, users now make their own maps and upload them temporarily (7 days) for play, with the following condition:

Only maps that are not copies of the map of the RISK boardgame can be used. Copied maps will not be stored and cannot be used for games.

It is a creative way around the situation, but the result is that they are stuck with maps that look like this...

 No bonus info? No attack routes? No style? I'll play on Classic - Art, thank you.
