There did seem to be a bunch of people who all started playing around the time I did (/, militant, lalaland, browng iirc)

Doesn't seem to be that any more.. good idea to have a noob mafia up all the time. I only started playing cos skittles (I think) had noob mafia signups going

Yeah, back when I started there were RT games almost every day that I got experience in. Mods just aren't willing to let new players into their big games, which is completely understandable given the time and effort that goes into them and the fact that deadbeats flat out ruin a game.

Solution: like has been said before, newbie games, newbie games, and more newbie games. I'm gonna try and help by organizing a few C9's or maybe something a little more interesting for the newer players in the near future, and I'll try to keep at least one up at all times. This will help them learn the ropes of playing mafia, and helps me learn the ropes of modding. It's a win-win!

Indeed, in the golden days of yore RTs were a good formation tool :P
Nowadays I agree with F1fth that the solution is to have at least 1 or 2 newbie games (or simpler open-signup games) all the time; it wouldn't hurt the general activity right now heh.

I've been thinking about how I decided to run the usergroup I setup, and having the game in the hidden forum wasn't the best idea, I think. I'll probably run the games in here from now on, but have signups in the usergroup. That or just have the forum as a Q&A area for the game.

Also, another suggestion I have is for mods to try to make games with less people. I know the big 20-30 people games are a good time, especially when it's well made, but there a few problems with them:

1) They take a long time to get going, causing people to lose interest.
2) It's more difficult to keep track of them (theoretically more people posting :lol: ).
3) People are only willing to join a finite amount of games. If everyone's already in a couple big games, no one joins new ones and the community stagnates. It also doesn't help that they take much longer to finish too.
4) Gameplay is a lot less personal. This is a bad thing for newer players because we want them involved in the community. It's way to easy to submarine or even lose interest because it feels like they don't go anywhere (it's FREAKING HARD to get the 15 votes for a lynch).

A few additional comments: I love big games. Or I should say loved them. That's because they were a once-in-a-while occurrence in a thriving community. Now things have unarguably slowed, and pretty much all we get nowadays are large games (with notable exceptions). We need to change that.

I actually think it will be favorable to the vets as well. Think about a large game: what do we think of the first day, or even the first couple days? A worthless waste of time, mostly. So why do we play these large games? The fun of the endgame scenario when we know anyone could win at any moment. So why don't we cut to the chase and just make the games smaller?

I got plenty more to say, but this post is getting kinda long, so I'll stop it here.

EDIT: One more thing. There's too much emphasis on name claims/metagaming in big games. Themed games were initially made to play the game of mafia with a little extra spice. It's hardly even the same game when every uses role names to figure out the most suspicious people are. It's supposed to be about reading people, not the wikipedia entry of a movie or TV series to see if it would make sense if the mod made Character A be Role X.

I find the 20p size still manageable provided things are not left to last forever, but yeah I'm pretty disgruntled with games larger too. Games shouldn't take 4+ months to complete... A bit like some Flat/No cards games that last for 100+ rounds and bore the f*ck out of everyone, in fact. :P

Yes, theme's aren't entirely necessary, especially not to the degree we see them to in this fourm, but lets face it: If games didn't have themes, we'd all be bored stiff quickly. I think the best solution is to have the Mafioso sit down and lay down some strongly suggested (not mandatory, mind you) guidelines for modding games.

Oh, that's not to say they can't be done. To quote the post-morbidly-obese-U.S Cookie Monster, "cookies are sometimes food." Now substitute "20+ people games" for "cookies", and "setups" for "food." :D

And we can't blame Skoffin. To be perfectly honest, it took watching all the struggles of both mod and players in that game for me to really see the harm of too many big games and the possible pitfalls.. We should actually thank Skoff for bringing it to our attention. :lol:

I think that's an excellent idea, and we could get a few informational threads started and hopefully stickied.

But what do you think of the idea of us electing someone that the CC administration might trust enough to give moderation status in just this forum? Would they even consider this?

Well, yeah godfather worked in the end as a large 30 + player game with characters based on movies, but also un-named townies etc. thrown in for good measure and because a lot of people in the film are bad guys so to speak, no-one knew who was a good guy or not in the setup. In the end of the day, that game was a success I believe, even if it did start to peter out near the end with inactivity, even at the end a lot of people PMed me saying how much they enjoyed the game... However, in the current climate a game like that could not be a success and thats why I decided my next game, based around scarface would only have 10 players in, though unfortunately I have been unable to start it, because of the amount of workload I am being set at the moment.. I can't forsee myself starting it, until december time unfortunately, when my two 4000 word and two 2000 word essays are handed in and I'll have a break for a bit.

Yes, me and LSU and Twill were in talks about this for a fair while just recently and Twill came up with an idea, I think its posted in the CC mafioso forum if you are a member.. but the last PM I sent him to was never responded to, as it was sent the day before the forums messed up and the fall of classic map, I guess he's had more serious worries to deal with recently...

I think you remember correctly, I have Skittles! to thank for getting me into mafia properly, I played a newbie game before that but forgot about it ao kinda deadbeated and did not really contribute. Skittles!'s game got me interested :)
