Make seq default setting when creating games [Done]

Postby Velvecarrots on Wed Jul 30, 2008 1:43 pm

Concise description:

  • Lots of new players who join the site start a freestyle game because they are too lazy or too ignorant to check it.
  • Many new players start a game without changing any settings, and it ends up being a classic freestyle esc chained sunny 2 player game, which a high rank usually joins and point farms.

Specifics:
  • Switch "Freestyle" with "Sequential" in the start a game menu.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Less freestyle games will be created unintentionally.
  • New players will have a fighting chance in their first game, and, if/when they have more success, are likely to continue playing CC.
  • Higher ranks won't point farm (not saying that high ranks point farming decreases the quality of the site, but I think it's unfair for a new player to get pounded by a high ranker when they didn't intend to create a freestyle game)

NOTES:
- New players most likely have only played the board game risk, if any risk at all. In both scenarios, there is no freestyle.
- I think a majority of new players intend to create a sequential game, so it makes sense to have sequential as the default setting.
This game was once fun, but the necessity to log in every day finally took its toll on me.

Best Score: 4660 (11/20/10)

Not just new players, I've seen a number of tournament games that had to be remade because freestyle was the default.

I wanted to suggest it myself long time ago, with similar explanation, but I've been too lazy. Thanks Velvecarrots!
That would be very significant improvement and it's extremely easy to apply.

But what about people that normally create freestyle NO WAY.

Totally agree. Freestyle can hardly be considered the standard. Many (including myself) consider it to be broken. Why is that the default, go-to play style on the menu?

I know this has been suggested before, but I don't think it was given a status.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this gets changed once the Game Finder/Start a Game revamps make it to the top of lack's to-do list.

I have been meaning to suggest this for ages, but keep on forgetting.

I wholeheartedly approve of it... new players would be more likely to have a positive first experience of the site.

I have no problem with the point farming (MOBA, rabbiton and torcav are actually fairly polite in their games with noobs), but it will be interesting to see whether these guys can maintain general without a steady supply of their staple diet.

Looks like it has happened again. :?

I think this suggestion deserves to be given some status.

This is a VERY good idea in my opinion...

Game Finder wrote:Sequential: 1,821,728 results on 18,218 pages
Freestyle: 739,138 results on 7,392 pages

That should settle the "but lots of people play freestyle" debate ;-)

edit: curiously, that makes a total of around 2.5 million games, when the current game numbers are over 3 million... that's a lot of missing games...

right, but you're not counting games were dropped, as the #'s are not re used, and games that the logs were lost (as they don't show up in game finder)

I think it's a great idea too. We already tried to create a thread to revamp the Game Finder/Start a Game pages and was completely ignored. Thus the major problem with this forum. So many great ideas that nobody pays any attention to and they just fall to the wayside.

No, it wasn't completely ignored. The graphic guru who was hired ended up having to leave unexpectedly soon after, so very few of those planned changes ever got implemented.

blake...the thread for fixing the pages was nothing more than moving the crap from the bottom to the top. Simple cut and paste. I'm just guessing that lack is using his iphone to edit the pages and thus can't use cut/paste......i dunno though.....

Hell...this idea is a simple cut/paste too...just move the one on the left to the right....

I agree. Sequential should be the default setting for a newgame.

Yeah, but this is one of those tedious things that could be done in 30-45 seconds.

I thought of it a long time ago too...but was like egh....it's so obvious there must be a reason it wasn't changed. Then I learned it's just too tedious.

Great idea, i am sure more seq games are created over freestyle so why not have seq as the default option??

And it is not only new players who do this, i am sure many people have created a freestyle game unintentionally.
