Lately I've noticed that may you be an experienced organiser or newcomer in the amazing tournaments' world, there are things that are made according to following saying - why use the shortcut when you can go around. I've decided that I should share the experience that I've gathered when running my tournaments and hopefully it will become a dialogue between myself and readers of the newsletter. This is not meant only for organisers, I would also like to hear thoughts from players who have played in tens, maybe hundreds of tournaments but never run one. You have different views and perspective that might be hidden from myself and other playing organisers. Everybody, please contact amazzony with your questions, problems, ideas and thoughts!
Today I've decided to concentrate on Inbox. Optimus Prime has made a great job with a small guide that locates in Q&A subforum of General Discussion: Powers of the Inbox: How-To. Though a lot is explained in there then I would like to bring out a few things.
- First and most important thing for TOs is the improvement that came with new forums awhile ago - chance to send a PM to many people at once. It's a blessing I tell you. I'm sure we have readers who don't remember the times when you could send message only to one person. Of course, it never stopped crazy people from running big tournaments but I'm very thankful (and there are surely others) that I can send one message to hundreds of players at once. It has opened new doors to updating tournaments, sending out games and pushing the limits to bigger and more complex tournaments.
- Every saved second is a second that can be used in improving the tournament, I like to think. I've lately discovered that there's a cool button "Compose message". So, when you are sending several messages in a row then you don't have to return to Inbox and click "NEWPM" but you can save a click or two time to time. Might not seem much but when you are sending hundreds/thousands of messages then it saves you just a bit of time and I've found it quite handy.
- Last but not least, a quick explanation what's the difference between "Add" and "Add [BCC]" buttons. When you use "Add" then everybody can see who the message has been sent. If you push "Add [BCC]" button then you won't share with others who else has got the same message. It's good to know when sending tournament invites or other messages that include tens or hundreds of names.

This time, amazzony's tournament advice will be short because I was hoping to get some feedback and questions from readers but it seems that everybody either know their inbox really well or don't understand at all so no questions came. I would like to say that this part of the newsletter is mostly to help organisers and players to understand and learn some aspects of the site and other things that are related to tournament organising. I won't be giving hints how to win tournaments because for that there are way better people like BaldAdonis, Godd and killmanic who are in the top of winning tournaments.
As promised in last issue, we'll look a bit more into inbox and this time I would like to turn your attention to messaging etiquette. I'm not sure it's the best word for the following but it's the best I could find.
- First thing, after deciding who to message, is to write a subject. For that, I would recommend not to use Hey or Hello but something more specific about what the message is about. It's especially important when messaging people who get many PMs a day and might not have enough time to read them always (people like myself ). If you are writing about a tournament then always include the tournament name in the title and after it you can write more specifically what your message is about (in brackets for example). Add "results", "question", "mistake" etc.
- Secondly, after subject, you'll write your question or problem or whatever is on your mind. There's not much to follow in there IMO, just make sure that you make yourself understandable. Though, I have a few suggestions. When you are writing about some certain game, make sure that you add the game number. If you are having trouble with some certain player, make sure to add the player name (correctly written). Little things like that can save a lot of time.

It's been a few weeks now since I've given some advice but now I'll mix something together to all the organisers and players out there in hope that everybody will find something useful. If not from this issue then perhaps in the previous ones or maybe in the future.
- Firstly I'd like to mention one more thing about messaging and this goes fully to tournament organisers. Biggest mistake that I've seen in messages is that organiser either says that take a look at scoreboard or please post results to tournament thread but... why aren't you adding the link to tournament thread then? It's just a few extra clicks but make players check your thread and make things a lot comfortable for your players (and to you if you wish people to post results).
- Now, lets move on to BBCode. You can read all about it when you follow this link which also locates under smileys when you type a message and it is under "BBCode is ON/OFF". A lot is explained in there - how to make bold, italic and underlined text, how to add colors and change size and how to mix it all. Quoting, code and list is also explained in there. Finally, linking and putting pictures to forums is also in the guide. In some future issue I will talk more about how to manage images and in next issue I will talk more about some tags.

Before I get to specific tags, I would like to write a few words how to put the tags into your message/post the most easy way. For some of you it may be simple but I think that explaining it won't hurt.
- To add tags, may it be color, size or anything else, you have 2 possibilities. First possibility is to enter the tag(s) and then type your text between them. Another possibility is to write the text first, then highlight/select what you wish to put between tags and then press the tag button.
- First I would like to introduce you the most common one used in tournament forums. I'm sure that many players and organisers are very grateful for this one.
- It's game-tag and looks like this: [Game][/Game]
- This is an easy way to get to games fast. Putting game number between the tags makes a simple shortcut to the game so players could enter it and organisers check the results fast. Are you a player looking to post results or an organiser sending out games, this is the tag that you should always use.
- How to use it. To get this: Game 123456; type this:
- Code: Select all
- An upgrade to game-tag is to-tag and it looks like this: [to][/to]
- This is meant for organisers who wish to put an extra effort into sending out games. I personally don't use it because it's not in the "tag-strip" so I have to type it every time I wish to use. Secondly I think that if people first see the game they are joining then it might help to avoid joining wrong-setting games. So, I just don't find it comfortable enough to use but I understand completely people who wish to use it and I encourage to test it out to see if it's suitable for you.
- How to use it. To get this: View Game 123456 (Auto-Join Game); type this:
- Code: Select all
Of course, "PASSWORD" needs to be replaced with the actual password of the specific game.
- Last tag that I will introduce is spoiler and it looks like this:

- I think the main purpose of this is to avoid awfully long posts so loading and scrolling wouldn't take forever. How you wish to use it is up to you and your imagination. I'm personally using it to keep a long schedule short in here (scroll down after scoreboard). To see/hide what's hidden behind spoiler, just click show/hide.
- How to use it. To get this:

I had the idea that each bonus region could be developed into its own map thus having a total of 6 maps. So the entire map set would be a total of 7 (these 6 region maps and the original USA map)

Now lets move on to today's topic which is images and how to put them to forums. This is used to make scoreboards. I'm going to give you step by step introduction how I make my image scoreboards. I'm sure there are other ways and programs to that can be used but I'll give you my point of view.
- Making scoreboard. For that I use excel. Those who don't have Microsoft Office can get free programs from internet (for example, OpenOffice).
- Making image. When scoreboard is made then I need to make it as image. I use IrfanView for it because it's simple and easy but at the same time gives different options. You can also use Paint of whatever else program that lets you save images.
- Getting scoreboard to image. Select everything in excel that you want to be in the image and copy it. Then save it as GIF extension (unless you have a picture or something that needs better quality, then use JPG).
- Uploading a picture. If you understood my instruction correctly then you have a picture in your computer now (if you didn't then don't hesitate to message me and ask better ones). To get the picture to forums, you must upload it to some site that hosts pictures. I'm using www.photobucket.com. When using that site make sure that your "image max size default" would be 1 megabyte (it can be changed under options).
- Posting to the forums. Now there's just one more step ahead. Copy your image link from photobucket. Either Direct link which means you have to add image or bigimage tag in forums. Or IMG Code which means you already have image tags and you don't have to add them in CC forums. Just copy one of them and in the end, when you want image posted in the forums it has to look like this:

When it came time to look for help in the form of new Tournament Directors, it was fairly obvious ,to all involved, who would be the best choices at this time. These two have certainly paid their dues and proven their value to the Tournaments Forum and to the CC community at large.

copy and paste ftw!Well all the tournaments I saw usually had a high ranked member as the winner. so I figured it would be fair to make one for newer ranks (cooks and below) to give them a good shot at a victory, thus came my "Battle of the N00bs" franchise.
I should stop doing that lolI usually like the options to be voted on, I like that freedom to be there. the only exception is in the Tour de France, I did that because playing that on say the Asia map would be just plain dumb
