[Official] Centerscape/Midgard REVAMP [Quenched]

Hello everyone. This will be the new thread dedicated to Centerscape Revamp winner, #4 entry by RjBeals. Competition Thread

But do to some unforeseen things outside of CC, RJ will not be able to finish the map. But after some talking, here is what RJ agreed to allow.

RjBeals wrote:Because of other projects that sort of all happened at once, WidowMakers has agreed to finish this map for me. I don't want a second revamp falling into the foundry furnace (Brazil will get done one day). He's already been working on it for over a week. I know he's already taken out at least one of those center lakes and made another mountain range. He's going to complete all the finishing touches (ie. border errors, legend, territory names, map title?)..

Anyway - thanks for the compliments from everyone in this thread so far.

Here are the changes I made to RJ's map in the competition:
    1) Adjusted borders to fit Centerscape GP (I think)
    2) Applied Title that RJ had worked on but not finished for the competition
    3) Fixed legend colors
    4) Fixed bridge colors
    5) Added Mountains
    6) Names Bonus regions (not final and I know I spelled Fire Mountains wrong)
    7) Added lake monster
    8) Added Dragon in Purple/Red mountains
    9) Added Dragon to legend
    10) Moved around some names so they would fit better

SMALL Version 01
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/7499 ... v01oz5.png

To Do:
    1) Pick appropriate names for territories (only where absolutely needed MUST HAVE GOOD REASON)
    2) Colors (specifically orange and red)
    3) Legend names?
    4) Add RJ sig to map
    5) Maybe add more creatures to land and sea/lakes
    6) Other suggestion...

My goal is to alter the map as little as possible from RJ's design. Everything you see here was in the original PSD file I got from RJ (except the lake monster and mountain dragon)

Image
P.S. I assume this can be moved to the MAIN Foundry because it has passed the IDEAs right?

Quick thing: I don't really like the symbol in Midgard — honestly I would just like it all text. It doesn't really suit the map — the symbol that is.

Then instead of the circle, how about a swirling dragon or serpent?

I really like the title, I think that in order to have a dragon or serpent instead, it would have to be done *really* well in order to not look tacky and like you're over doing it. One thing I don't like is the boats way off there. If you were to replace them with something better suited (more fantastic), or take them away completely, I think that'd be better...

As someone who plays the large map exclusively, I'd prefer to see the large a bit larger, if that's possible.

I also have a bit of trouble telling the difference between the Golden Fields and the Central Forest. I'd say swap the color, but that would ruin the whole color-named continents thing.

I really can't find much else I don't like about this. Good job :D

The boat next to the legend looks kind of crammed in and out-of-place in my opinion, I think it should be taken out. Other than that I really like this map.

I think it needs more dragons.
they need to be everywhere!

... maybe one up around Onset. that part of the map is kinda lonely and could use an extra dragon or two. Or maybe by the bridge in BadLands.
I also think the dragon by Alexandria should be a bit taller, so its wings come up above the mountains.

Other than that, it looks excellent.

I disagree about the size, Z. I play the large map and it's annoying to see everyone do a 800x whatever no matter what. it's the max size not the "this is what you should use size". this one happens to be 700.

I also disagree about more dragons. That's not what people voted for. The changes done so far are fine (except the dragon in the Death Swamp/Wastelands mountains which doesn't look good to me). The one on the legend looks awesome. The sea dragon is really cool too. Fix the third one. Maybe move it to somewhere that it isn't blocked by mountains. One more dragon other than that wouldn't hurt but any more and it could get cluttered. remember we need army counts on this too. The reason people voted for the map is the simplicity. Makes sure the newly added theme doesn't intrude on that.

The one way arrow still needs more work. Perhaps make it larger (longer) so it is not solely hovering over the mountains. It kinda gets lost where it is now.

do we think these mountains might be better served being like the ones on Wales (the colours being all one type in one area) ?

Well first of all, thanks WM for taking this on. You've done good so far. Also, just because I had the layers in the PS file I gave you, doesn't mean you have to use them ;) Use whatever creative freedom you wish.

I played around with that title - but was never satisfied, which is why I turned off the layer. But you've done a great job with it. I think what I didn't like was the Nordic symbol for the "A" in MIDGARD. I like the circle behind it. But I'm good either way.

I really like the dragon wrapped around the legend color blocks. But I hope you don't over do it with the "dragons everywhere". Also, I kind of liked those ships. Maybe the one beside the legend does look a little cramped, but I hope we can at least keep the top one.

You can change colors to whatever you wish. The territory names also. Not too much though was put into them, because I was planning on getting some input from the foundry for that. But anyway - feel free to use me as a resource, I just didn't want added responsibility of another map to complete.

Maybe 'dragons everywhere' was too much.
It just needs one more somewhere around the Icy North continent.

to satisfy the dragon theme, if any territory name changes are made, make sure they are renamed to be the names of dragons from literature, movies, pop culture etc

The key doesn't help if you're color-blind - how about naming the continents to something similar to one of the countries in it: Hubland, Cynici, Hamptons, Vegas, Nektar, Avallonis, Bad Country?

Maybe move the dragon at Sleab so that the mountains are solid and prevent access between Orka to Sleab.

Sentence caps instead of the wambly sTuDLY ALL CAPS.

You're right in saying that this can go straight into the Main Foundry:

And, as a revamp, you get the Gameplay stamp from the get-go, as we're only updating the graphics ;-)

As far as territory names go, I always thought it would be nice to give another nod to Tolkien by naming territories after Characters from Middle Earth, but NOT the commonly known / obvious ones like Bilbo, Frodo, Gollum, Elrond etc...

For example, the region formerly known as Rohan could have territories in it named for the Kings of Rohan...

Nice job WidowMakers.
I love dragons, as said maybe one more.
Excellent title and keep at least one boat.
You could maybe add some waves in some of the lakes, the biggest ones...
Can we see a version with armies numbers.

I'm pretty sure all names in Tolkien books are copyright protected, so I think it's better to avoid any problem in this revamp for copyright issue.

If Bond can't get copyright protection, then Frodo, Gandalf, etc. should be acceptable names. That being said, I don't think they'd make very good names. I'd prefer some more obscure references, ie Kings of Rohan.

Well, if they aren't copyrighted, you should definitely use some names from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time as well. The names he gives the nations in those books are perfect for this sort of map. Let's see here. . . .

Dragonmount
Shadar Logoth
Caemlyn
Shienar
Saldaea
Tarabon
Amadacia
Altara
Ghealdan
Murandy
Tear
Illian
Cairhien
Arafel
Kandor
Andor

Those are just a few, there are some great city names that would work wonderfully as well. Perhaps each of the "continents" or whatever we are calling them these days could follow a naming convention from a popular fantasy series of some type?

You could use the following as a starting point for chosing which series to pick your names from:

The Lord of the Rings (series by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Wheel of Time (series by Robert Jordan)
Sword of Truth (series by Terry Goodkind)
Mistborn (trilogy by Brandon Sanderson) <-- personal favorite

I'm sure with some brainstorming we could come up with several others to use. I would totally be willing to volunteer to do some research and submit a good set of names for each continent using this pattern if you want me to WM. Or, if territory names are a no-no and we have to stick with character names my point still stands, and I can do the research using character names as well. :)

Honestly, how can a Middle Earth remake about dragons not have a territory named Smaug? It'd be tantamount to treason, really...
