A New Script

Night Strike wrote:Hey everybody, chipv has made a script to help organizers (or players) gain information about their tournaments. It can be used to easily find the winners of games, the order of finishes, and other statistics. If you would like to contribute to his thread, please check it out: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=86543

Chipv may also use this thread to get some extra input from all of you (like he did when creating the Map Database). I hope you all can use it and contribute to chipv's great work.

chipv wrote:
What does it do

This is the first version of a tool that produces stats from Tournaments so pretty simple at the moment.
Go to the Game Finder.
Select Tournament.
Optionally type in Partial Game label (see below).
Press Tour Stats button (at bottom of Game Finder).

There are 2 tabs one for Summary and one for Detailed Results.

It has gotten great reviews!
JoJo123 wrote:Love it! Love it! Love it! Thanks so much for adding this on. I'm floored at the amount of time I will save. Now I can make more tournaments!

BaldAdonis wrote:This looks fantastic. For a while I'd been using Map Rank on 5-7 different players to see where I stood in long running tournaments, and now it's all in one place. Gonna go play around with it now....

This week we had the opportunity to interview b00060. All questions were submitted by readers of the newsletter. Next week, we check in with one of the other organisers, coded.
You can submit your questions in this thread.

Now, on with the interview!

Q: Hello, b00060.

A: Hell00060

Q:What makes you interview worthy?

A: I am not sure I am, but I do like to answer easy questions

Q:How did you find this website?

A: I saw a co-worker playing and he told me what was up

Q: Why did you join CC?

A: It helped pass the time at work and I love strategy games

Q:Whats your motivation (or why do you like) to play on CC?

A: I will play with anyone on any map. Doesn’t matter if they are a chef or the Conqueror

Q:Why did you start to play tournaments?

A: To be honest, I wanted a little trophy on my sig to go with the medals. I like the idea of medals and trophies as they were goals for me to reach and helped me spread out and play maps and formats that I wouldn’t have normally played.

Q:What made you want to start running tournaments?

A: See answer above. It was another trophy

Q: How long have you been organizing tournaments?

A: Only for about 3 Months

Q:What tournament did you first run?

A: b00060’s Classic Shapes Tournament. It is actually still going.

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration when organizing your tournaments?

A: I love the tournaments that mirror some story line or format so pretty much anyone that takes the time to develop an original idea that you can tell took a lot of thought and time to create.

Q: Describe the experience of your first tournament ran, and first played in.

A: The first I ran was and still is a lesson learned. I have already concluded several tournaments, but my first is a doozy. I created a no spoils format tournament that is currently in round 155 and the final game has not even begun yet. Sorry TODRICH, hwhrhett, White Moose and JOHNNYROCKET24.
The first tourney I ever played in was a very short lived experience that left me wanting more. It was a freestyle tournament game that I didn’t get to take more than 3 turns in.

Q:Tell us about your overall tournament experience from when you first joined a tournament to the present day. How has it changed for you? Is it a better experience than before? Worse?

A: The greatest thing about tournaments is that in most of them you get to see the same names and play against some of the same players and build a rapport with them. I have made several friends by battling in tournament games head to head. I also enjoy the fact that many tournaments are structured for players to play and experience maps and settings that they normally wouldn’t play. I think a lot of the players on CC stick within their wheelhouse and I enjoy the tournaments that force them to spread outside of their comfort zone. I think that the more maps everyone plays, the easier it will be to find an opponent that will play with or against you. If that makes any sense, no I am babbling.

Q: How many tournaments have you run already, and do you have a goal in mind for how many you want to run in total before you "retire"? How many are you running right now?

A: I am currently structuring my 13th tournament. Shameless Plug attached
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=88173

Q:What tournaments have you organized?

A: Well, my bread and butter is “b00060’s Classic Shapes”. I think it is a great way for players to try out the tournament format and get their feet wet in a map that they are probably very comfortable with. I also like the way I have shaped the format for beginners and those that are in the Society of the Cooks will find familiar. Although I am a fan of pretty much every map on here and promote trying them all, the Classic Shapes map takes a lot of the little know intricacies of some of the maps out of the formula and boils it down to basic strategy and the luck that every game entails. The field has grown large enough now that if you win, you have truly proved that you are a force to be reckoned with. with.

Q:What is your favorite tournament you have run?

A: b00060’s a tournament to give back. It was a tournament that I created that only previous Tournament directors were allowed to enter and allowed them each to pick their own map to play based on one that they utilized in their own tournament. Congrats HighlanderAttack! It was kind of my way to give back to those that I know put a lot of hard work and extra effort into CC so that others could enjoy a tournament.

Q: What is your favorite tournament you’ve played in? Why?

A: Well I have won 4 individual tournaments and made it to several of the finals in many others, but I would have to say all of the doubles tournaments I have played in. I think it is more enjoyable when you have someone else to share the victories with.

Q:Do you prefer to run or enter tournaments?

A: Enter. I love to do both, but feel an obligation to give back to the community by running events, but when it comes down to it, I love CC for the games, so definitely playing in tournaments.

Q: Is there a specific type of format that you tend to gravitate towards? Why? Is there a format that is your favorite? What about other peoples' tournaments?

A: I enjoy 1v1 tournaments, because it gives you an opportunity to build a rapport and chat with other players.

Q:Are you selective about which types of tournaments you join or do you join just about everything you can fit into your personal game load? If you are selective, do you look for certain styles or organizers?

A: I have never joined or not joined a tournament based on an organizer. I pretty much join every tournament that I can fit into my workload and if they are dubs or trips games I will play with anyone that asks me first.

Q: Do you find it easier to choose tournament settings yourself, or to let the players customize them?

A: I think that letting other players customize them lets them get a little more involved. I have run both types of tournaments and as an organizer it is definitely easier to run with your own settings, but by letting the players pick their own, I think it allows many of them to stay in their comfort zone and lets them feel that they have a better chance at winning knowing exactly what they are in for. At the same time, creating a bunch of one off games that have crazy settings is a lot more time consuming.

Q: Overall, are you playing a lot in tournaments? If not, then why and where do you find your games to play?

A: I have been a member for just over 6 months and have played in almost 7000 games. I have a disease. I will play pretty much play with anyone, against anyone, on any setting and on any map.

Q: How excited where you with your first CC win?

A: I think it took me over 10 games, because I was new to the site and was mesmerized by all of the maps and played some that were very difficult like City Mogul and Feudal that if you didn’t know the basic format, it was almost impossible to win. So it felt extra rewarding knowing how hard it was to actually do. Now I never lose ;)

Q:If you had to win one tournament that you are currently a part of which would it be and why?

A: Any of the team tournaments that I am in. I have yet to win one with a partner and I have a lot of friends on CC that I enjoy playing with and know that we have a shot at getting that victory.

Q: What is your most disappointing tournament loss to date?

A: No comment.

Q: In your mind, what makes a successful tournament?

A: Good organization and communication. Everyone on CC has different commitment levels and it is important to simplify everything for everyone involved to eliminate hiccups.

Q: What do you consider to be the most successful tournaments you've seen run?

A: That’s a great question and one that I don’t want to name any names in fear I will omit someone, but Too and EoGE’s, HighlanderAttack, JoshbBoy, Blitzaholic, Coded, Serbia and dcb have some great events. I think the ones where everyone has fun is what is important in making a successful tournament

Q:Have you ever been disappointed in a tournament you have run? What about one you entered?

A: The first one I ever created. No Spoils to me are like applying an emergency brake on a game.

Q: What makes a successful organizer?

A: Organization.

Q: How do you attract players to your tournament, and what aspect (besides a reward of a premium prize or something like that) of a tournament do you think appeals to a lot of players and why?

A: Well I don’t really do any marketing like soliciting people in games or sending out mass pms, but a free premium membership would definitely bring out the players. I like to just set it up and let the players come. That way you know that they really want to play and aren’t joining because they got sent the link.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you dislike about tournament organizing?

A: Only deadbeats. I can understand stuff comes up, but most of my tourneys fill up in less than a week, so there is very little reason you shouldn’t be able to join a game.

Q: For you, what is the best part of being a tournament organizer?

A: Declaring someone the winner and knowing they will be getting that trophy.

Q: What mistakes do you see tournament organizers make the most?

A: I have seen some pretty sloppy game invites. There is nothing worse than getting a mass pm and having someone else join your game because the invite is confusing or hard to read. The easier the better in my opinion.

Q: With experience comes the wisdom of knowing what mistakes you've made in the past so you can avoid them in the future. What mistakes have you made in your tournaments that you are sure to avoid in future tournaments?

A: No Spoils first and foremost. After that, the invite process is the biggest area to have a mistake. I like to send out game details only to those involved in the game and not one big one for the whole field. It eliminates people joining the wrong games. It is more work, but easier than trying to track down who joined the wrong game and dealing with a bunch of games that need to be re-created and players that wind up playing games that don’t count.

Q:What is your opinion on organizer neutrality? Should organizers be allowed to place themselves against their own clan mates in tournaments? Should organizers be allowed to join their own tournaments at all?

A: I have never played in one of my own tournaments. I almost did once, but someone listed as a reserve , so I let them take my place. I think that that as long as all of the rules are in black and white and the tournament organizer doesn’t have to use his or her judgment, then there really isn’t any issue with playing in their own tournament or having their clan mates join. In the end, they have the same chance as everyone else.

Q: Do you use a "schedule" for updating your tournaments, or do you just wait until they need an update?

A: I check each one of them every couple days and update the tournament link and send out any necessary games. It is not that much work.

Q:Should “question marks” be allowed to join tournaments?

A: I am on the fence on that one. I have never had any issues in the past with them, but could see how it could become a possible deadbeat or multi issue in a tournament.

Q:Do you feel it is better to give a bye to players whose opponents deadbeats the tournament, or to use a reserve?

A: I guess that would depend in the round they are in. Most of my tournaments have not been 1v1, so I have simply used a reserve.

Q: If you could change one thing about Conquer Club in general, what would it be?

A: Like I said earlier, I am goal oriented. Kind of like getting a new game and getting excited each time you get to the next level and once you finish the game, there is a sense of having nothing left to accomplish. So I guess I would like to see some of the new medal options I have seen in some of the forum posts implemented. I think they really help the site by increasing players to spread out and play different maps and settings, which makes the site more enjoyable overall.

Q: If there was something that the Conquer Club administrators could implement into the game to make tournaments easier to manage, what would it be? Similarly, is there anything you would like to see taken away from Conquer Club to make running tournaments easier?

A: I guess an option to cancel a game and its potential ranking impact. This would really be useful for games that become deadlocked or games that the wrong player joins and all players are in agreement.

Q: Is there anything that you would recommend to encourage new tournament organizers?

A: have fun with it. If you aren’t having fun and enjoying it, you might become lazy and it will impact everyone involved.

Q: List your top 5 biggest tournament headache's to this point

A: 1) no spoils causing a deadlock, deadbeats, incorrect game invites, people joining the wrong games and losing in the finals.

Q:How much time does CC take from your day?

A: I am in front of a computer pretty much 10 hours a day and always have it running in the background and take turns throughout the day, so I would guess conservatively 2 hours. I know, I have a problem. Like I said, I am averaging over 1000 games a month!

Q:Are you a member of any clans or usergroups?

A: I am a proud teacher of Society of the Cooks, that I enjoy helping members learn some basic strategies. (I know Wacicha and Gloryordeath, I have been pretty scarce, but I will make more time)

Q:Who do you look up to in this community?

A: I look up to anyone that puts in effort to make this community better. Whether that comes from making a tournament, helping with the actual site itself or solving disputes, anyone that gives their time to keep CC enjoyable for all and continue to grow I respect.

Q:Who are you?

A: I am a 35 year old father of 3, who has way too much time on his hands at work

Q: Why did you pick the name b00060?

A: Its actually something that goes back to the early 90s when I first started using the Internet. It was my randomly assigned user id from my old dial up provider and as a result have used it ever since.

Q:What are you? Seriously though, what's the meaning behind the name?

A: No exciting story behind that one, sorry.

Q:Where are you from?

A: About 10 miles outside of DC.

Q:Favourite play color?

A: Green, the color of money

Q:Favourite and least favorite map?

A: Favorite Map – Classic Shapes,
Least Favorite Map, Supermax Prison Riot – It is too busy for my feeble mind to wrap my head around.

Q:Favourite settings?

A: Sequential, escalating, chained, no fog

Q:Freestyle or sequential?

A: Sequential. There are too many people on here that take advantage of the freestyle format. I know it is a format that everyone who plays knows going into it the advantages and disadvantages, I just don’t have the time to waste on that format to take advantage of the loop holes.

Q: Any tournaments planned for the future? What are they?

A: Just stick with my Classic Shapes tournament. It seems to be a crowd pleaser for its simplicity and minimal commitment it requires for everyone.

Q:How does it feel to be interviewed?

A: I feel like I should have been wittier. I just got caught up in actually answering the questions

Q: Any parting shots?

A: I apologize to any and everyone that sat through this interview.

Q: Thank you for your time.

A: Thank you!
