Database Hardware Upgrade

Postby lackattack on Tue Feb 23, 2010 9:41 pm

Unfortunately the recent database software upgrade didn't make enough difference and there have still been slow page loading times. So we've taken the next step and increased the RAM memory on the database server from 12GB to 32GB. This should definitely make things run faster for a long time to come! :P

Also on the performance front, we've replace the xml code behind the Age Of Merchants map with a more efficient version. In particular that could make a difference when using community scripts while playing games on that map.

Did you look for them in 'Join speed games' or did you look under 'Awaiting players'?

32gigs of ram! Yay! If the sql database configuration is all setup properly, then the database should use all the ram and run wonderfully.

Lack will be doing some additional streamlining of old game XMLs as well. I know he's got some other projects in the work for this year as well that should drastically decrease poor performance.

It's great to see this happening and I fully applaud it, it's made a big difference to my gaming experience.

The thing I would say is that perhaps your performance monitoring needs looking at, as this was an issue for quite a few weeks? I'd have thought with my limited technical knowledge (I'm a Project Manager, not a tech) that there are apps that can do this for you and warn when overloads are approaching.

Agreed there have been issues for a while, but before we wanted to make the upgrade, we wanted to exhaust all possible tweaks and setting configurations before diving in completely.

But nonetheless, hopefully this, along with a few other behind the scenes performance workings that Lack is up, should keep CC running smoothly for a while! :D
