Improved Army Printing

Postby lackattack on Mon Jun 14, 2010 4:19 pm

We made a very important change to the way troops on are printed on the map.

What has changed? (Geek talk alert! :ugeek: )
Instead of downloading a transparent image with armies printed on it to your computer, the armies will be printed by your broswer's JavaScript engine.

What does this mean for me?
  • No more delays for armies to appear
  • No more missing armies
  • The font is slightly different... (same size as before and most numbers are identical in most browsers)
  • This will reduce load on Conquer Club servers which is always a good thing!

Community scripts affected
Thanks to the cooperation of our most excellent Tech Team, all community scripts were tested in advance and updates were prepared for the two that broke: BOB, CM, and Assault Odds. If you use these scripts please upgrade to the latest version. Although it is a minor annoyance to have to upgrade, the new versions will perform quicker thanks to the changes:
Assault Odds: Upgrade here
BOB: Upgrade here
CM: Upgrade here

Font issues
Unfortunately the font might look quite different for some users depending on their browser's zoom level and computer's OS. If things don't look right, there are 2 things you can try:
  • Set your browser zoom level to normal
  • Install Tahoma font (this font already comes standard in Windows and most Mac OSX installations)

=================================================

UDPATE: Performance is greatly improved now that it only redraws armies that actually changed during your turn. The Hive and other large maps should be much more playable now.

UDPATE: I tweaked the font some more, should look better in Opera.

Thanks for keeping the updates rolling. Anything to take load of the server and speed things up is a good thing.

Of course I'm very used to the old font, but I'm finding this one VERY difficult to read, especially with colour codes on (which I use all the time). Are there any other fonts available? Could a user script use make use of a different font?

Is it any bigger than the previous font? It seems so but perhaps its me.

This would be good to know for mapmaking purposes...

For some reason, the font look BOLD and sometimes is UNREADABLE! Specially when you have large stacks of armies.

Also, the black outline/stroke on the font doesnt help as well.

Bottom line: I DONT LIKE IT THE WAY IT IS NOW! :D

Ok, good. I went to one of my games, and thought there was seriously something wrong with my eyes because the font of the armies looked different.

I don't get how it's harder to read. I think they're a lot bigger and easier to read.

~_~ This new font is bothering me right now, but presumably I will get used to it. In any case, it was a glaring enough difference that I immediately decided to check these forums to see what had been changed to cause it to look this way.

Font changes (and broken scripts) aside, this sounds like a good change from a technological standpoint, and ought to allow greater flexibility in the future, which could be interesting.

The font is the exact same size and most numbers are exactly identical. The number 2 and 7 are slightly different now.

Yeah, it's a very interesting change for me.

About the font changes: it's now decided in the CSS which font is used. This should normally be about equal to what it was, but there could be browser differences etc. that didn't show before (since it was an image before). If you think the font looks very strange, please provide a snapshot.

BOB is all messed up! Even with the update!

No Snapshots available, Stats are all messed up, and font still unreadable! Maybe is just my Mac and the change might be intended for PC users only.

Thanks for making it faster. The font is differant though, and the texture of the font. It almost looks blurry. I'll get used to it after a while. :D
