I'll have two slots open in a day or two. Unfortunately I don't think I can manage 3 anytime soon.

Re: Jules Verne Contest [ACT I - 1st Round]

Postby Dukasaur on Sat May 28, 2011 5:06 pm

I am starting the games for Act II, Round 1, Map 1. There is still one game going in Act 1 Round 2, but one person (djelebert) from that game is already advancing, so that leaves only one person to settle, and I know some of you are getting anxious to get on with this. So we will begin, and hopefully game 8870045 will be settled soon, either by someone winning or by a deadlock-breaking rule.

Now, on with the show!

Act II round 1 will feature 9 maps covering four Jules Verne novels. The first novel we will be enacting is one of my favourites, Journey to the Centre of the Earth
or Voyage au centre de la terre in the original French.
The story involves a German professor (Otto Lidenbrock in the original French, Professor Von Hardwigg in the most common English translation) who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the center of the Earth, presumably one of which is Snæfellsjökull in Iceland.

We will play 2 maps to enact this novel. In the first, we will use the Nordic Nations map to get to Iceland, and in the second we will use the Iceland map to get to Snæfellsjökull.

DJENRE's original intent was to play 3 maps at a time during this phase, but I think with so many freemiums in the tourney I don't want to try for that just yet. I'll start map 1 first, and once all these games are underway I'll start map 2 and see how many freemiums are willing and able to free up a slot. Maybe we'll get to 3 maps before Act II is over.

The bonus on the Nordic Nations map is Iceland. In order to score the bonus, you need to capture the entire Iceland bonus zone and hold it for two rounds. In other words, collect the 2 bonus troops for Iceland on 2 consecutive rounds.

Other than the special bonus on each map, the normal scoring on all Act II maps will be:
DJENRE wrote:For each game, points are given as follow:
1st = 10pts - 2nd = 8pts - 3rd =6pts - 4th =4pts - 5th =3pts - 6th =2pts - 7th =1pt - 8th =0pt

The games have been created and I will start inviting you into your games immediately after posting this. I will also PM out a copy of it.

It's interesting.... I was looking through the list of who's left, and 51 of 64 remaining players are officers, including a huge number of Majors and quite a few Colonels. That's 79.69% officers -- probably the highest ratio I've ever seen in a tournament that didn't actually have a point restriction.

Anyone who's studying the rules will have noticed, but I suppose I'd better remind everyone else: On the 8-player maps the minimum number of players remaining is 4, not 3. Therefore, to collect the bonus, you must be holding Iceland for the second round while there are still 4 or more players alive.

Wrote to OleCowboyHippy regarding his missed invites, got the following response on my wall:
Hey Dukasaur...orangenitrox here. I've been babysitting his account forever, now. I have no idea when he'll return...but I'm tired of playing his games. I'll finish what he has but not accepting invites. Sorry.

I'll start going down the list according to my Substitutions Rule

Edit May 30th: King Gary was first on the list and he has accepted his invite. King Gary replaces OleCowboyHippy.

I've made a formal request in the Inactive Tournies thread to have DJENRE removed:
http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=126085&start=30#p3194769

I have a lot of respect for DJENRE and the work he did getting this tournament put together, but we can't have the "where is DJ" question hanging over our heads forever.

I removed DJENRE as a Tournament Organizer.

Please remove him as a player as well. Nobody should account sit for another player for more than one month.

Whoever is taking turns and joining new tournament games for DJENRE: Please stop doing that from now on (you are allowed to finish the ongoing tournament games).

The last series of events in this tournament were misleading so I'll pop the question: Is the bonus for iceland available with ONLY 4 players left in the game, or with AT LEAST 4 players left in the game?
If it is the latter please modify the first post so that there are no further misunderstandings.

The short answer is "AT LEAST 4."

The long answer is "Please read the bonus FAQ that I posted." Link: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=136933&start=480#p3178347

I've said it before, but I guess I have to say it again: I have no power to edit post 1. That was DJENRE's work, made before he vanished, and I have no way to edit it. A couple of DJ's turn-sitters have volunteered to edit it for me, but I declined, because it is against CC rules. My editted version of post 1 is on page 33 of the tournament thread: here Sorry, I know it's a bit of a pain scooting ahead to page 33, but if you just bookmark my post there you will only have to get there manually once.

With all the arguments about holding bonuses, and what it implies for chatting in fog, does anybody think we should switch to Sunny games from now on? Willing to consider debate on this subject.

I'd support that, for when bonusses are involved. Not being able to know has an impact on the game. I think its because of poor reading, but still

Hi Dukasaur

I have 2 slots open for games, I was wondering if I should save them for this tournament or go ahead and find new games.

Game 9145021 is invalidated and does not count for this tournament.
Game 9216262 replaces it.

According to my previously-announced replacements rule, Marechal Joffre replaced DJENRE.

Hi general, and thanks for posting. I really wish everyone was as considerate as you. Most of the freemiums have not given me any notice of their plans. I think you should keep one slot open and I will try to get the Iceland games started within the next couple days, but go ahead and use your last slot somewhere else. If we manage to get two simultaneous games going that will be great, but I doubt if we will ever successfully get to three.

Once again, thank you for keeping me informed!

Thanks for being patient everyone...

Marechal Joffre has missed his first invite, I hope he will accept his second. I found a note in one of his other games that he may have no Internet for the weekend, so depending on when he returns I may even give him a third. It's not the usual way, but he didn't get any notice that he was being called up to replace DJENRE, so I think it's reasonable to be lenient.

Edit: Okay, Marechal Joffre accepted his second invite, so crisis averted.

Okay, now that all the Nordic Nations games have started, I would like to start the Iceland games within the next 24 hours if possible. Before I do, it would be nice to have some more input on this: Please vote, should we switch to Sunny or stay with Foggy for the remainder of the games?

I asked this question a while ago, so far only SirSebstar has answered.
