Yeah the tilt, which automatically made me look for a north arrow on it. Also to add to the nitpick pile the labels on the small map are pretty small. I can read them but some take a second or so to make them out. Not sure if you could scale them up just a hair.

Otherwise great map and I look forward to playing it.

ISN2, congratulations on winning the contest.
Just a couple of issues for me.
1. There is nothing graphically on this map that says "istanbul" to me apart from the title. Are you planning anything graphical to alter that.
2. Is not connected spelled with 2 "n"s ?

if you still need someone to do the XML when the graphics are finished, i'd be happy to make it for you.

I have done the XML for Oasis, Iceland and Operation Drug War. so i am experienced.

As for the grpahics, maybe add a small turkish flag to the red area where it sais Istanbul city map, and add some typically turkish image in the sea or something, to make it actually get the 'istanbul feel'

I agree with cairns, there's nothing that screams Istanbul in the graphical design of the map. Also, I'd argue Gazio is a +3, since it has three borders and four territories. And especially with Esenler there, you could have both with still three borders for a +6 with the current values (which is certainly nowhere near as hard to hold as Fatih!) - it would at least be only +5 with my suggested Gazio value. Also, Guztepe is not worth more than +4 - 4 borders, 5 territories. Honestly, I think you could also stand to raise Fatih and Kadikoy by +1 each, but that's not entirely necessary - use your judgement there.

The tilt is of course what I'm going to reduce ...
I got this suggestion exactly when I submitted my map too ...

I believe labels in small map will be read better after I reduce tilt, but if not, then I will work on them.

Thanks, about #1, the map idea is a desk with some real maps, a pen and a note on it (The desk of someone who is going to travel to Istanbul maybe), if you look at real maps you can see that a small part of them is the name of the map. I have an old map of Istanbul myself and the folded upper part of it is the name of the map in white with red background and the idea of that name in my map is from there, I guess it's enough but if you think there is really another graphically name/title needed then let me know where and how more specific ...

About #2, yeah right, my bad, I'm going to fix it ...

Thanks for the help offer, I will ask for help If I needed. I think I can do it myself btw ...
The flag idea could be cool, I will try it to see if it gets interesting ...

About "Istanbul in the graphical design of the map" refer to my above comment.
About bonuses I think you are right about all of them, I guess others also can comment on bonuses to see if we can get an overall balanced idea ...

ender516 wrote:Could someone please enlighten me as to the meaning of the "Mh." abbreviation?

I'm not sure but it may be the abbreviation for "Mahale" which means something like a district in English ...
I extracted all names from Google Maps so I'm not sure if they are well spelled or not. You can check it here:

Minimise the rotation and crop tightly to the map... If you move the bonus legend on top of the sea area, then you'll have very little wasted space - and it doesn;t matter that the map is smaller than the available canvas... sometimes it's nice to see a map that isn;t overly large

Nice idea about moving the note (bonus legend) ...

Shall I go on with these ideas? Aren't there any more?

I think the theme, while revolving around Istanbul, as a core, also incorporates the 'traveler-motif'---which I think it develops well. It is not unlike Route 66, which plays on the traveler-motif as well.

I think you can crop out a lot of that empty space at the top.

Second, what does the map underneath say?

i think it's supposed to say Turkey Roads but it says Turkay Roads.

I understand the travellers theme, that's OK. Perhaps a post card of the Santa Sofia (or some other image from Istanbul) sitting under the top right corner with the pen angled over it.
Also, the legend, is that meant to be a ticket or similar? Perhaps it needs a slight enhancement to look like something that a traveller would use.
I hope this helps. :)

it might be cool if you put some photos of some landmarks from istanbul in the picture, like polaroids scattered on the desk. it'd be a good way to reinforce the 'traveller-motif' while addressing some concerns of the map not having much cultural relevance.

just a suggestion.

I like the Polaroid idea. There's a really cool freeware program called Poladroid that can take any image and make it look like a Polaroid photo.

http://www.poladroid.net/

Maybe if you get some images of Istanbul you like you could run it through that and then layer them around the map on the open desk areas. I used Poladroid recently for this map I created for my buddy's bar crawl around Wrigley Field.

Nearly 100 people voted for it in the contest, so the point is moot :P

Victor Sullivan wrote:I think you can crop out a lot of that empty space at the top.
Rotating the map by another 30ish degrees anticlockwise (so it's tilted slightly the other way) will enable you to crop a bit more tightly, as the background card is less important than the front one.

That typo needs to be fixed :P

This is probably a little late to be said in Final Forge, but I thought it might be amusing if there were some pen scribbles on the map. Well, not accually scribbles, but more of a doodle of a famous landmark in Istanbul where it is on the map. Or perhaps label the Sea of Marmara (at the bottom) or the canal in rushed printing. Or a circle around where his/her hotel is. Like traveller's notes just jotted down on it.

I was just thinking, because there's a pen there...

It would be a big change but I'm just throwing it out there if you want to try it.

Nearly 100 people voted for it in the contest, so the point is moot :P

i think what bruceswar wanted to say is that the map does not have an instanbul flavour. nothing turkish about it.

maybe instead of the pen there could be a fez. or perhaps a box of lokum.

As I mentioned, I think the motif the map incorporates is more the traveler aesthetic, which I think it can develop more. I think the idea of landmarks of Istanbul is a good way to add Turkish flavor, without adding things that are outside of the aesthetic, like a Fez.
