Re: World Cities Contest - Istanbul [1 Sep 2011]

Nice work!

I live in Turkey and some typos in territory names caught my eye, so I checked all of them on the map. Correct ones are:
Marmantepe Mh. -> Harmantepe Mh.
Kermal Pasa Mh. -> Kemal Pasa Mh. (with Turkish characters: Kemal Paşa Mh.)
Gosku Mh. -> Goksu Mh. (Turkish: Göksu Mh.)
Meviana Mh. -> Mevlana Mh.
(bonus name) Guztepe -> Goztepe (Turkish: Göztepe)

I also have some minor suggestions.
Territories with "Mh." are small districts and these names may not be known much.
So I'm suggesting some replacements where it is possible (these are shorter names too):

Muradiye Mh. -> "Yildiz Sarayi" or only "Yildiz" (saray=palace. this is a known place. Turkish: Yıldız)
Mollafenari Mh. -> Topkapi (Turkish: Topkapı)
Beş Telsiz Mh. -> Zeytinburnu
Harmantepe Mh. -> Kagithane (Turkish: Kağıthane)

I also agree with tokle that the original territory names with Turkish letters would be better.
I can help finding necessary fonts if you are willing to change them, just send me a PM.
For example the Journal font I found on the web already supports some of the Turkish letters like Ü, Ö, Ç.

Happily, if you can put the right Turkish characters here, then we know it can be done in the XML as well, so the names will be correct in the drop-down menus and the game logs. So I hope the search for a suitable font is successful.

I didn't see this discussed yet, but I'm curious why you chose the colors you did.

I really want to like this map, but it is far too bright to look at for any extended period of time. There's no way I could play it. Between the bright neon orange/yellow bonus highlights and the bright red map borders, my retinas short circuit.

The nobodies posted a colorblind test with issue previously and it doesn't seem that you've addressed that either, so I'm hoping you'll reconsider that palette!

I wouldn't mind betting that ISN2 has fininshed the map and that is all we are going to get. ;)

Well, if you are able to use BOB, you can reduce the opacity of a map, which might prevent eyestrain. I use it mostly to emphasize the troop numbers.

I agree with natty_dread about the text on the small version. I'm worried that when the image will be compressed the font will result really hard to read.
Another advice I want to give you is to save your images as png instead of jpg, in this way I can pass to lackattack a lossless format file. ;)

I suggest to try to refine a bit the coastline of Etiler Mh. and Besiktas, maybe also Piri Pasa, as suggested by natty.
The minimap, it certainly helps to solve the colorblind issue, but it seems to me something done in 5 mins of work; no offence, but the different font sizes, the different directions of the text....I'm pretty sure think you can do something better than that. :-k
Another way could be to go back and work on colors, now you have something like #fe7819 for Fatih, you can use a darker color....maybe #9b4609; for gaziosmanpasa, where you have something like #76ca1c, you can use a color like #a3cda0.
Find two different colors will allow you to go back and have the old legend that was much better than the minimap you have now!

A final note about the direction of the text, you have a couple of names that go in a different directions, to be precise the "Mh" of "Etiler Mh" and also "Inebey Mh".

Looking forward your next update :)

What does Mh. stand for? Given that it's on pretty much every territory, is it actually required?

I'm not sure but it may be the abbreviation for "Mahale" which means something like a district in English ...
I extracted all names from Google Maps so I'm not sure if they are well spelled or not. You can check it here:

i say remove the "Mh."
it looks rather bad because of the repetition.

i had a similar problem on steamworks where "shire" was present in almost all terits. so i simply removed it.

oh and Mh indeed stands for mahale. we have the same word in romanian except it's spelled mahala and it means neighbourhood, sector, district etc

The land area edges could use smoothing, there's many places with unnecessary small wiggles... like that thing on Zeytinlik, and the coast of Piri Pasa...

Also, the text is a bit hard to read on the small version.

About mini map edges, it's on purpose, that's a peace of paper, it's the style for it ...

Those small wiggles are ports/etc that you can see on real maps and I guess it's more beautiful to keep them there.

About small map texts, I changed the font style, it's now so easier to read names ...

delibekir wrote:Nice work!

I live in Turkey and some typos in territory names caught my eye, so I checked all of them on the map. Correct ones are:
Marmantepe Mh. -> Harmantepe Mh.
Kermal Pasa Mh. -> Kemal Pasa Mh. (with Turkish characters: Kemal Paşa Mh.)
Gosku Mh. -> Goksu Mh. (Turkish: Göksu Mh.)
Meviana Mh. -> Mevlana Mh.
(bonus name) Guztepe -> Goztepe (Turkish: Göztepe)

I also have some minor suggestions.
Territories with "Mh." are small districts and these names may not be known much.
So I'm suggesting some replacements where it is possible (these are shorter names too):

Muradiye Mh. -> "Yildiz Sarayi" or only "Yildiz" (saray=palace. this is a known place. Turkish: Yıldız)
Mollafenari Mh. -> Topkapi (Turkish: Topkapı)
Beş Telsiz Mh. -> Zeytinburnu

Thanks a lot for help my friend, I fixed all names and also changed all the names you suggested ...

ender516 wrote:Happily, if you can put the right Turkish characters here, then we know it can be done in the XML as well, so the names will be correct in the drop-down menus and the game logs. So I hope the search for a suitable font is successful.

About using Turkish characters for main names in the map, sadly I'm not going to do that, I played Iberia map a few times and when I was not using clickable maps, I always had problems with those special characters, when not using clickable maps, I select the territory drop down and type half of the name I see on map to get to that territory in the list, but in Iberia I always had problem with typing the names since I could not type "Évora" or many other of those territory names ...
I'm not going to put people to this problem in this map, I prefer the standard English characters, the Turkish one I was discussing with tokle, was my misunderstanding that I thought he/she meant the postal card photo name ...

tokle wrote:
tokle wrote:I meant the text on the actual map, not the postcard.

A lot of the placenames are misspelled. Does no-one else than me have a problem with that?

Read top sections of these post for these ^^^

lostatlimbo wrote:I didn't see this discussed yet, but I'm curious why you chose the colors you did.

$.02

About the colorblind test, I added the mini map, so there will be no more problems for a colorblind person ...

thenobodies80 wrote:I agree with natty_dread about the text on the small version.

Nobodies

I fixed small version problems, also the outputs are now in PNG ...

About costliness, yeah I saw the problem, refined them ...

About mini map, believe me I tested many thing and that's the best I got out ... Different font sizes and directions are to place the texts better and also make them to place in their own continent as much as possible ... Personally I like the mini map style myself ...

If I want to change the colors to make them "colorblind safe!" I actually have to change all colors, and it will completely change the map's look, also look at the past version with old legend and this new one beside each other, the new mini map is more classy and beautiful in my idea ...

And about texts going in different directions I'm not sure what do you mean? It's a text box in Photoshop, without any path or path style, maybe because "M" is bigger in left and "h." is smaller in right with a rounded corner you think they go in different directions!?

DiM wrote:i say remove the "Mh."
it looks rather bad because of the repetition.

i had a similar problem on steamworks where "shire" was present in almost all terits. so i simply removed it.

oh and Mh indeed stands for mahale. we have the same word in romanian except it's spelled mahala and it means neighbourhood, sector, district etc

Well since delibekir didn't suggest removing "Mh"s I think it's more correct for them to be there ... Of course they are making a difference with names without "Mh" too ...

And thanks for the info about the word, I'm happy that I guessed the meaning correctly ...

Looks pretty good. I'm not sure if it is just me, or others see the region/territory names as pixely or fuzzy, but that is one thing my eyes see.

Would you be opposed to adopting a new color for Kadikoy, since you use that gold color for the highway/road system?

Keep up the good work,

They are. ISN2, have a play around with your text options. Should clear that up without having to change anything.

Right, but it doesn't look like paper edges, it looks like pixelation. Just smooth over the pixelation, you can still have a slightly uneven edge on it... try going over the edges with the smudge tool, real carefully, just slightly smoothing them until there's no pixelation, but be careful not to overdo it...

It could still use a bit of improvement, IMO. Maybe try making it 1 px larger?

Any suggestions for the fonts? Changing color? adding background? Adding line around it? Or maybe removing glows etc ...? I tested many things and I can't still get a prefect thing on small one ...

Making the texts larger may cause some problems with texts going on highways and other territories ...

You could use the turkish characters on the map only, and not in the xml code. Or would that be confusing?

Nah, I think they'll fit ok if you just increase it 1px.

Also, were you using GIMP? If so, turn the text auto-hinting on.

Would you be opposed to adopting a new color for Kadikoy, since you use that gold color for the highway/road system?

Keep up the good work,

The best alternative I found for the orange/gold color was gray ...

They are. ISN2, have a play around with your text options. Should clear that up without having to change anything.

Fixed ...

Fixed ...

I'm not going to put people to this problem in this map, I prefer the standard English characters, the Turkish one I was discussing with tokle, was my misunderstanding that I thought he/she meant the postal card photo name ...

You could use the turkish characters on the map only, and not in the xml code. Or would that be confusing?

It would absolutely be confusing!!! :|
Please forget this idea, I'm not sure why should we force ourselves to do something which can only cause problems for the players ...

I think the new color works pretty well. Looking good!

The coloured borders don't seem to be of a uniform width around each zone. Compare Uskudar to Ferah Mh. or Elmalikent Mh. to Kanlica Mh.

I totally agree with you! Have the same characters on the map and in the xml is the way to go. Don't mix things, because, like you said, it will only create confusion.

Yeah, it would be nice to have the same width everywhere, it will help a lot do understand the continents borders and it will be also a nice graphics touch.

A couple of minor nitpicks, see the image into the spoiler:
show

Finally, it's possible to have the highways that connect Bayrampasa, Kemal Pasa Mh., Kuloglu Mh. and Besiktas with the same width of the others, They look thinner right now. And the one that connects Kuloglu and besiktas is very hidden behind the text.

Good work ISN2, your map looks very nice, looking forward to see the above things fixed and so be able to give the beta stamp to this map very soon!

Fixed, also fixed all other coast borders ...

Sadly it's not possible since they are thinner in real (It's not a mistake that they are thinner on map, it's on purpose), the bolder ones are highways and the thinner ones are wide/important avenues ...
Check Google Maps or these map links to ensure:

Fixed by moving text on both small and large version a little to sea ...

A couple of nitpicks: Why is the water two shades of blue?
Image

I suggest moving Kemal Pasa down under the army circle so you can see the roads, while Kuloglu either needs to be moved down or the circle moved up so the army number won't overlap the name.

I can see 4 different types; Lower right, lower left, north and the water between piri pasa and bayrampasa.

It's the fold of map paper, has been discussed in past pages ...
