i'm studying for an exam on this, which is why it came to mind

1) Hobbes' "nature of man" has no supporting evidence of its soundness. Social contract theory is based on a pure abstraction with no basis in reality.

2) Hobbes' sovereign is not an accurate depiction of the individuals of some group. There is no "general will." It's like mistaking "society" as a single decision-making entity, while overlooking the intricacies within society, i.e. the interaction of individuals who are merely categorized under that word "society." The term "general will" fails to take into the account that these individuals have different and sometimes conflicting wills, i.e. they strive to accomplish their own goals, whatever they may be.

3) Dissenters "from the general forum opinion" receive benefits and costs through the voluntary exchange with other individuals. This "arena of exchange" develops into and within an institutional framework, called the market. The organization which deals in coercive and potentially coercive exchanges is the government. Of course, these two realms blend, but the study of economics and the market deals with cooperation and voluntary exchange. The study of politics and the government deals with conflict, with principal-agent exchanges, and what have you.
