So, I've been thinking about Modding...

Postby AndyDufresne on Fri Jan 27, 2012 4:07 pm

...Again, maybe. I haven't modded a Mafia game since 2007 or so :D. I had quite an immense amount of fun modding back in the day, but I also had a pretty good group of dependably active players, and there weren't many other Mafia games in town (I think it was me, autoload, and dagreatbroomhead...and our games floated around in the Off Topics forum before a game forum). I've got dozens of ideas still from all my old notes about all the thematic games I wanted to do, and I think I have a game half written up still somewhere. I really tried to give a story to my games...and provide roles and characters with a backstory to add to the fun elements.

I'm somewhat hesitant to start back up, mostly because the two games I've been active in as a player over the last couple of months have suffered from inactivity at times.

My past games are somewhere in the bottom dregs of the Mafia forum.

Anyways, thoughts?

inb4 signups!

Yeah sometimes the activity does drag, just make sure you keep prodding people if necessary. You could also host a game based on invite if you want to be sure the players you get are active. I also find that less vanilla = more activity because people are more motivated to find information and feel more useful in the game in general.

Ill be honest, I don't play my hardest when I am vanilla

What MoB said is true. Prod, replace, and have less VT.

Since these games are just for fun, there are really no rules about letting people in, so if you know that someone may be inactive, just don't let them in. Their feelings might get hurt, but they'll get over it.

You could probably ask some of the more prevalent mafia players and Mafia Mods who more reliable players are as well. When there is action to be had, trust me, mafia games get going faster than any Davy Jones Thread, that's for sure. I've looked away for 12-16 hours and come back to 4 pages of reading.

Or you could go old school like everywhere did and shorten the days and nights up, Its a quicker pace and apparentley, if your inactive you get lynched lol. I like it. no grass growing in that game, just have to pay closer attention. But I would enjoy seeing some laid out mafia games.

Smaller games are key. 17 is to much for the fora ATM IMO.

I'd love to play in one of your games, Andy! :D Of course, as you pointed out, there may be issues with activity, and with your being an admin, that could attract a lot of people that probably don't know what they're getting into and don't have the time or experience to dedicate to such a game. Perhaps inviting people to play would be a better route to go?

Nice to see you as an active member again, Andy, I must say, I've enjoyed skimming through old games of yours.

All my old games and had day and night deadlines, and I've probably keep those elements. I think the largest game I ever did was 16 players, but also have done 14 and 12 (I started with a night 0 as you folks now call it).

Hm, I'll give this all some thought, and see if I can finish the half developed game I started writing from a couple of years ago...

I also came back from my Draugr crypt to mod one more game. It's fun. The people now expect the days to take soooo long.

It would be great to see Andy back to mod another game. Agreed about the days taking so long now. I preferred mafia back when we had 4 day deadlines but still there was tons and tons of activity, especially with the pressures of the deadlines. Nowadays, however short deadlines just seem to result in NLs.

You should totally do it :D

I think that the activity is better than it was when I left, although still not what it was when I first joined. I hate inactive players and one of the problems with mafia is that newbies think they are less likely to get lynched if they shut up, which I don't necessarily think is true and is certainly less fun. Also some experienced players can end up monopolising the days and then getting NK'd, since there is a wider variety of experience.

Not quite to nag status yet, but I'll get there eventually re: nightkills

The game I've had half written for a few years recently was semi-used in as theme. So I'll probably wait some buffer time.

you could have someone else do the sign-ups for you, but then once the game is about to start you go "surprise bitches, I'm the mod!"

Go for it Andy. Also if you dislike people just throwing out votes like there is no tomorrow, put a limit in how many "votes" they can have a day like I did back in the civil war and the american revolution. It definitely made people use FOS more and limited the "joke votes" for day 1 :)

You can be a bastard mod and allow every player to vote for every other player exactly once in the game, I heard that format has been used before (not necessarily here). It does sound fun though, fake claim once and you've basically won the game :p

I still need to finish the story of the game, since most of my games have a backstory and characters with a backstory, though I will probably do a sometime a few less backstory heavy games, since I has a list of ideas that still would be fun to do.

Maybe I'll make it a summer / fall project to finish it...
