Mods On Strike?

Postby Funkyterrance on Wed Oct 03, 2012 1:22 am

So I was thinking for about five minutes on ways that CC could be saved and it occurred to me that a lot of the mods on here do a lot of work for the site but don't get paid. Then I asked myself: "What do they do it for then?".
I think there are basically four main reasons why volunteers and mods continue to do what they do. In order of importance(to me):

1. They love the site and enjoy making it a better place for all.
2. They continue to support the site, in varying degrees of enthusiasm, due to sad attachment.
3. Free Premium
4. They like the feeling of superiority(imaginary or not), driving them surprisingly well.

The hard fact of the current state of CC by general consensus is that all of these reasons could be dashed in a relatively short amount of time. Therefore it seems that those in a position to really pull a power play on lack(mods) could band together to stop what could ultimately mean an end to their modships.
What I am suggesting is that the mods and volunteers go on strike! :)
While memberships may be dwindling, the rate is slow enough that lack doesn't even give a bland sidelong glance to the site. If all the mods were to strike at once, and I mean a complete and total dropping of all responsibilities, imagine the chaos... I should think that many, many members would downgrade their accounts. Now a drop in premiums like that might just get lack to spit his gourmet coffee onto his screen. Worst case scenario he sells the site and someone who actually cares takes the helm.

Unfortunately, I think that things have to get worse before they get better. O:)
So mods, its all up to you, don't let us down.

Care to amplify your post? All of your posts seem to be pretty vague and non-substantive.

More medals.

Reading people's disciplinary records, which are surprisingly interesting.

If the mods went on strike, I dont think CC would have any trouble finding more volunteers. I think there are enough good people on this site that would step up and volunteer if CC was truly in dire need. Just my 2 cents

Yeah, the new #4(old #3) probably falls under that category. Although I feel a lot of mod power is more perceived than anything.

So you're suggesting lack could just get some "scabs" to cover for the mods? I suppose it's possible but from what I can tell most of the mods have been doing what they have for quite some time and filling their shoes may be harder than you think. There would at the very least be a big lurch in the functionality of CC. Also, given the current state of affairs, I'm not sure how easy it would be to get people to set sail on a sinking ship. It would take a lot of propaganda that I doubt lack has the energy for.

perception of power, especially in the minds of those the power is supposedly over, is still a form of power... but yes it is mostly smoke and mirrors

Cuz it's yours?

You know if there were no mods every one of your threads would be trolled like they are now. What kind of site would this be if that happened?
This post was made by jefjef who should be on your ignore list.

Its a means to an end, derp.
Its not meant as a permanent situation dude.
Furthermore, are you aware your post made no sense? Every one of my threads would be trolled like they are now??? That's a redundant statement!

Could you expand on who you think would be hard to replace? You are talking mods only, not admins right?
So we keep:
Lack
Andy
Achilles?

Actually: just reviewed the list now.... The Foundry team would take a huge, huge hit.. As would the Society of Cooks. I am pretty sure they are some of the most active, and have been here a lot longer than I have

Yeah I was thinking that anyone who was actually on the payroll would not even consider the idea for obvious reasons.
My thoughts were that no matter how qualified a replacement may be, there is generally a "settling in" period before productivity is restored to anywhere near full capacity. Some of these mods have been doing very specific jobs for long periods of time and that level of comfort I think takes time to replace.
I'm actually quite serious about this idea...

I don't see a correlation, what I referred to was like working at HR at a workplace, you don't have power per se but you still have juicy information on everyone like what people earn.
