When do you admit to being wrong?

Postby / on Thu Oct 04, 2012 2:48 am

I'm always willing to reconsider my facts and opinions when challenged, I will typically look up any new conflicting information and apologize for inconsistency. Though at times this makes me a bit flippant or arbitrary.

Under what circumstances do you honestly consider being wrong?

Happens all the time, multiple times a day.A lot of people don't like to admit this as they associate admitting being wrong or having a change of mind as weakness.

it usually involves my wife in some way...

in debate however if given a rational, coherent, well thought out argument, I do my best to reconcile the differences between my standpoint and the other person's. I have been quite wrong before, and most certainly will again, but rationality is the key to getting me to change my mind

+1
except for the wife part.

I try to live by the saying "strong opinions, weakly held".

I admit I am wrong when I find I am wrong..and occasionally when I don't think I am (with my husband, kids, mostly sometimes my boss as well).

I will admit I'm wrong in a debate-type setting when the data or facts show that I'm wrong.

I will admit I'm wrong in personal settings when it is more convenient to do so than to not to so (see the wife comments above).

Here's my view of things:

First of all, I will always believe that I'm right initially. After all, if I don't think I'm right...then why do I hold that opinion? However, I am open to hearing new information that may change my view that I'm right. In fact, that seems like a natural function of interacting with other people and other things, and a thing that should happen not just on a daily basis but on a moment-to-moment basis.

I voted a couple of times a month.
I will admit I'm wrong when someone steps up with some good old common sense in a more or less civilized manner. I can quote instances on these here forums where I have openly admitted to being wrong.
For the record, I've never heard Woodruff admit he was wrong. If cornered, he resorts to either redirecting the conversation or lashing out.

I might be a little stubborn as far as admitting to those I'm arguing with that I'm wrong goes, but if someone raises an argument that I genuinely have no counter to I will rethink my position later on.

I used to be that person that was never wrong. I still think I was right most of the time though, but still, a lot of times my disposition didn't help to move towards the goal. I then made a conscious decision that it was not important who was right or wrong, but it was important to move forward, so I started concede a lot of times even though I knew I as right, and when I started doing this I realized it was very easy actually.

If you allow others to come up with the best decisions by themselves, they do it with better disposition. This usually happens after their first idea fails.

In the end it doesn't matter much, you learn to see that it's not always that the other person can't be right, it's just that they don't care that much about it, or they have some other reason why they are making what to you is a wrong decision.

What I've never been able to emotionally handle is those who think they are very smart and trick people with words, or belittle them, happens a lot with bureocrats (idiots who know how to fill forms) and person in power, I rarely shut up. Just today I had to explode against an idiot lady that was somehow teaching me that if I paid certain tax in the bank I HAD to go tot he government offices to show the receipt. I told her it was bullshit that they had sent me notifications now twice to go to see a missing payment, and then she sort of let me know that I might have to pay 3 fines of almost 200 dls each for not going there after the first notification, HA! I made enough fuss than the "boss" invited me to her office and admitted they had it wrong, I had made the payments, they did receive notification from the bank, they were dealing with some problems with the records.

Back on my car, I lose the green color and I can understand that maybe the first lady might have had a bad day, and that she says that to everyone and never anyone corrected her, but still. They are to serve you, and most people would eat that treatment.

I had to eat humble pie as a quizmaster a coupla times, though in most cases, it's my source material that's wrong.
In discussions I often say "I'm pretty certain. Of course, I could be wrong, but I don't think so." That way if it turns out I am mistaken it's not so embarrassing.
On matters of opinion, of course, I am never wrong. Only on matters of fact from time to time.
And remember what the poet said – “in booty there is loot, and in loot booty.” Or sump’n like that.

For the record, then you haven't been paying attention at all. Not surprising, of course, given your posting tendencies.
