so just to be clear, you think movie critics aren't biased?

Did this question before, they're biased against crap movies. It's kind of their job to be. Next up, J9B argues Battlefield Earth wasn't crap, the critics were just biased against Scientology.

It was crap.

have you seen it, or are you making this statement just based on faith?

You're doing it wrong J9B. If you want to best Symmetry, you need to play by his rules. His rules are thus:

(1) Google the writer's name.
(2) Find anything that could potentially be scandalous (an article he wrote in 2004 or his political party affiliation).
(3) Post what you find and say that the writer's opinions should be disregarded because of the potentially scandalous thing.
(4) Pat yourself on the back and enrage BBS.

if symmetry knew anything about ayn rand, he's know that she considers critics of any kind to be leeches and "second-handers" who only criticize and provide nothing useful to society.

big surprise that these same leeches tend to hate her and anything associated with her...

Interesting position, j9b, but in order to best Symmetry you have to:

(1) Demand that Symmetry must verify your stance via Google.
(2) Ignore what 'burden of proof' means, and maintain #1 for 5 pages.
(3) If you are shown evidence to the contrary, get huffy and continue repeating your stance.

Is there any hope that those of us who don't care about besting Symmetry will ever be relevant again?

Well, nobody has accepted my invitation to discuss objectivism, in an objective (the common meaning) manner. We could start here.

I know you are into it, I know saxi must know a bit for he has implied it also if he's really a psychiatrist he must know some.. I know Scotty is a fan, I know john9 knows about it also, I read a bit.. what impede us?

Only the fear of being ridiculed for not being the mother fucker most erudite in objectivism in the face of the earth, universe and titan, top 10. And we haven't considered all the critics points: Big deal. I don't care to make a fool of myself, everybody here who has followed my posts knows I make a fool of myself willingly and not willingly every 24 hrs. WHy do you care??

In my case, it was simply lack of time. I know it's a cliche, but there's nothing like a 14-hour workday to discourage one from writing intelligent prose and make him retreat to silly one-liners.

But I will try to write something on Sunday, okay?

Still have not seen it. Way too busy working 14 hour days

Reardon understands 8-)

I heard it was good though, and the actors in the new one are better than the first movie. Can't wait...

Well this became quite a Randian anti-Sym love in Hippie fest quickly.

Symmetry's proposed Randian solutions:

1) Go on strike, remove yourselves from the board and show the plebs of the world what a message board would look like without you.
2) Join a dating site where you can talk to other fans of Atlas Shrugged.
3) Build a railway, then go on strike.
4) Sit in a dark room, watching Atlas Shrugged Parts 1 and 2 over and over again, while pondering what a free thinker you are.
5) Write some terrible novels, then go on strike.
6) Ponder the multiple ways in which some dude called Symmetry disagrees with you, and come back with more than "he researches the sources" as a point of contention.
7) Consider taking an online circle jerk to a state of offline solo jerk for rational self-interest.
8) Start a company that takes unwanted Live Strong bands and reforges them with a "WWARD?" logo. Then go on strike.
9) Declare Paul Ryan an apostate.
10) Ask for a cut of whatever Scotty is getting from his promo threads plugging this thing.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
the world is in greater peril from those who tolerate or encourage evil than from those who actually commit it- Albert Einstein

The first one was boring. Really boring.

The book wasn't bad. It would've been better if it was 200 pages.

I have to agree the first one was watchable but the second one was garbage. To me the second one was a repeat of "we have something really important to say and we are going to say it over and over" even though what they have to say is pretty simplistic. but hey she gave us Ronnie Reagan and all the deficit spending that came with him. OH hell sense I posted this I will add its interesting the filmmakers asked for a handout"kickstarter" to make this movie.Even though the "market" has not justified the making of the third movie.

Kickstarter is part of the market.

Any mechanism through which values can be transferred from one person to another is part of the market.

I've recently watched the DVDs of Atlas Shrugged I & II
and expect to read the book now anyways.

I suspect it to be a good read.

Do you think the acting and dialog was much better in 1 over 2?

As always, the book is better than the movie, and in this case drastically better. There is so much in the book of course it can't all be crammed into the movies.

Some things I appreciated in the book was the detail provided and reasons for the squalor some people were living in, and the back stories about the downfall of companies as well as men. Even the subtle tidbits like the classical musician tied in throughout. And everything that went into the reason why James Taggart married the dime store girl.

Why don't you check out kickstarter websites, read about how it works, look at the projects, and then get back to me?

I love the notion that somehow kickstarter is like a "handout." It's sort of saying that pre-ordering season tickets to the opera is a "handout." Generally the opposite is true one gets special perks for ordering in advance and most kickstarter projects also give "perks" to those who contribute should the project be successful. Atlas Shrugged was no different and offered special screenings and even being an "extra in the movie."

I didn't contribute to Atlas Shrugged but I did contribute to "P.O.O.P. The Movie", since it was a project by a former announcer for the Long Island Ducks.
